You made the original video? You need to do more research. You're wrong about Leicester having no money when they won the premiership. Tottenham's logo isn't a chicken. Arsenal's invincible season was 2004 not in the 90's. And for a country who butchered the English language because it is too advanced for you (honestly - where else would a 'side-walk' be if not to the side of a road, or were else would you wear 'eye-glasses' if not your eyes) you should learn how things are pronounced, not just butcher it. This is a clueless American's guide to football made by a clueless American.

Historical fact: Everton were one of the original Liverpool teams. When the football league was founded in 1888, Everton and Accrington Stanley represented the Liverpool area. For a few years Everton played at Anfield but a dispute over rent led to the owners building a new ground (Goodison Park, the first purpose built football stadium). The owner of Anfield then formed a new team which became Liverpool FC. If Everton had paid the rent all those years ago their greatest rivals might never have existed! Everton have also spent more years in the top division than any other team, only spending four seasons in the old Second Division (Arsenal have the most *consecutive* seasons in the top division).

The English League system used to include a lot of Welsh teams as well, although many of them were smaller clubs... In 1992, the Welsh FA created their own competition - the Welsh Premier League - and Wales-based team had to decide whether to move to this competition, or remain as part of the English league system - the largest Welsh clubs (such as Swansea, Cardiff and Newport County) stayed as part of the English system.

Even if you go for one of the big names, perhaps keep Crystal Palace as some mid-table interest. They are known as The Eagles after all, so significant American symbolism there. And their name is derived from a spectacular building (not an actual palace) so there's some interesting history. Unfortunately the building burned down, and that hints at the sort of experience you might have as a fan. Starting the season well, then staging a spectacular collapse; losing to teams they should beat, then beating the current champions: It can be a roller-coaster ride, and perhaps more interesting - and frustrating - than a team that's glued to the top of the table.

He’s spot on with his explanation of Spurs 😂 but let me try sell my team to you for a second. It’s very easy to select a team at the top, if you choose city, Liverpool or Chelsea you’re likely going to watch the team win every single game very comfortably, it’s like eating cake, it’s fun at first but it gets very boring very quickly. The reason Sports is so popular across the world is the drama, the story lines, the highs and lows. The good times aren’t quite as good without the bad to compare it to and no team epitomises this quite like Tottenham Hotspur. We don’t do anything by the book, we could be 3-0 up in a game and throw it away and lose 4-3 in the last ten minutes, the other side of the coin we can win a game against a team no one expected us to (we just beat the champions Man City at the weekend, in the glorious stadium that you mentioned) the point I’m making is there is never a dull moment and you’re guaranteed entertainment which is what football is all about at the end of the day. We’re an up and coming team especially in Asia and the states with 314 supporters clubs globally many of those in America 🇺🇸. It’s quite the rollercoaster and if I’m being honest it’s likely to crash into a wall at the end but it’s never boring 😂

Warning also Liverpool won everything from 70's to 80's lots of glory hunters were liverpool fans. Then came Manchester and Arsenal era, Liverpool didnt win the league for 30 years. Manchester City for like 50 years. You could hang your coat on one of those for no reason, support for some connection and who knows you might be supporting the next patriots vs cowboys,Raiders and SF. Or you more likely just suffer with the rest of us. My club Brighton (sussex) which is much closer to kent came back from an asset stripper owner and is now a premier league team. I think the big thing if you're not a local is finding a style of play that you enjoy watching. There are some teams that play a fairly negative style (Wolves and Burnley spring to mind) that it's hard to love as an outsider, especially compared to a much more exciting and dynamic team like Liverpool. Some teams for years prided themselves on playing the 'right way' (West Ham, Everton, Spurs, Liverpool) and Arsenal changed to be like that in the 90s when Wenger arrived so they are probably more likely to keep playing nice football in future, but it can always change. Chelsea are kind of transitioning away from the very negative style they had under Mourinho, so they aren't as dour a spectacle as they used to be, while Spurs are not the attractive open side they used to be after Mourinho managed them for a while. In terms of romance and human interest, it's hard not to pull for Leicester, it was a very humble squad that pulled together to win a championship ahead of many teams with maybe about 3 times their budget for player wages, including Marc Albrighton who lost his mother in-law in a terrorist attack ahead of the season they won the title. It's the antithesis of Man City where the club is essentially a PR operation for a questionable regime that are constantly pushing the edges of what they can get away with financially. Abramovich at Chelsea got his money in questionable circumstances but there doesn't feel like there is an ulterior motive to him, it feels like he is just indulging his love for the game (and is now selling up because of the crisis in Ukraine)

Remember the movie Fever Pitch, with Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon, where he's a Red Sox fan? Well, it's the American version of an English movie of the same name (which was based on a book of the same name). In the English movie, the main character is an Arsenal fan, and it's about the 1988-89 season, when Arsenal won a league title after 18 years. In fact, not only that 1970-71 win also happened after 18 years without a league title, but right now the last league title of Arsenal was in... 2003-04 (when they were unbeaten), which means that if they're champions this season it would also be after 18 years.

I think a commen way to get a connection to a team you follow and love is by watching matches. You will properly get some favorite players you like to watch, and then you will start to follow their teams. At some point you will start to connect to a certain team and then you want to learn more about the team and players. Of course it could also be that you connect to a specific style a team plays with. Or something else, like a smaller team does it way better than expected. Or a combination of different things. One thing is for sure, a growing interest in a specific team can happen after one match or over a period of time. Just like love.

Most diehard football fans will want to watch their team in the middle of the night because they don't want to risk some idiot telling them the result before they've had chance to watch their recording. So, you've narrowed it down to a choice between the Pensioners, the Reds, the Lilywhites and the Foxes. If they form the top four at the end of the season, I, for one, will be very happy.

If i was watching a recording i'd be very tempted if my team went 1-0 down to just look up the result to see if we'd turned it around rather than just having to see it unfold naturally. Sometimes you'll be disappointed and they won't but when they do is it absolutely worth it.

Try looking for the story of these teams, if you identify with any players in there, the colors, the fan base… all of this can be taken into account when choosing a team. I chose Chelsea because during the Champions League final we played against Bayern Munich and we ended up winning on penalties and nobody had faith that we would win it. I know plenty about the NFL and College Football thanks been watching them since the mid 80's. I do find it interesting that some Americans pronounce Leisure as "LEESURE" yet when they see Leicester for whatever reason the Lei becomes "Lie" and an H suddenly appears in the word too.

I don't know if it's really that much fun to be a fan of a club that buys its success with money from oligarchs or sheikhs and just spends a few million more when things don't go as planned. I'm not English myself, so at some point I had to decide which club I favor when I watch the Premier League. I have decided for Liverpool. A club with a long tradition, fantastic fans and incredible success. With the coach Jürgen Klopp they play not only successful but also intense and attractive offensive football. Of course, the fact that the coach is a compatriot of mine and I already knew his way of playing made it easier for me. Even though Liverpool is one of the best clubs in England, they are still financially underdogs compared to Chelsea and Man City. I like the fighting spirit and the commitment of the players and fans. That's why I'm happy to do without always becoming champion. All the greater is the joy when success actually occurs and with a Premier league title and a Chamions League title in the last 3 years I am absolutely happy.

You need to watch the Scottish Premiership!! Last year was insane with St. Johnstone (a relatively smaller club) winning a cup double, which only the 3 biggest teams in the country have ever managed to do. Rangers won the League title to stop Celtic winning 10 league titles in a row and it was all-round awesome. This year looks even more competitive with Hearts and Dundee returning to the league, bringing back both the Edinburgh and Dundee derby's. It's already started and it's already been awesome. Plus we still play the worlds oldest football trophy, the Scottish Cup, as we literally invented the game. Definitely worth checking out.

*Chelsea* : Excellent choice. *Chelsea - Liverpool - Tottenham - Leicester* : Even better choice. Keep tabs on these four and over the season see which one holds your interest. If you had to drop one, drop Tottenham :) Not that I'm biased or anything! :) But yeah, root for all four.

The best way to pick a team is to not pick a team. Just watch football and learn about various club’s histories. At some point something will click and you will feel an attachment to some club. Whether that’s in 1 month or 5 year’s time. No-one in the uk picks a club, and it’s probably the same around the world. It just happens at some point when you’re a child. Either through family or something else. That’s the only way you’ll really care. I remember in the 80s when American football was on uk tv for the first time. I picked a team, but I never actually cared or developed any attachment, because it didn’t happen naturally over time.

A suggestion: as a first step into following the Premier League I would strongly recommend watching Match of the Day (MotD) from the BBC. It covers all of the Saturday games (MotD2 is also there for Sunday games) provides plenty of context and some straight forward analysis. I think you'll love it!

Its got to be Liverpool for you: the passion of the fans (not posh Londoners), the charisma of the coach, that dynamic fast playing style of the team, the history of the club and the character of the city of Liverpool. Seriously become a Liverpool fan and you will start to meet other Liverpool fans all over the world and be really welcomed into the city YNWA.

@@qdHazen agreed 100%. I'm supporting LFC since Gerard Houllier's days. Players like Stéphane Henchoz and Patrick Berger used to play for the club. I've seen a lot and had to suffer through the near-bankruptcy. FSG have done a great deal for this club and they are spending rationally, which I love. With all of their flaws and mistakes, I am incredibly grateful that we have them instead of Russian or Arab Oligarchs.

Hello SoGal and Roger. I have many times commented on being being from Yorkshire and with my name I always got asked about Leeds United when working in the south, near Kent with a colleague who supported Dover. I grew up in an area where Leeds were not liked, as it was a rival city and they are not a team I follow, but they were also not liked in a lot of England. If you are a Klingon fan from Star Trek they would be the team for you. They were the best, later went down two divisions, then were bought recently by an owner who brought in one of the world's best tactical brains as manager and are on the up again. Alternatively Aston Villa are Prince William's favorite as they were not a fashionable club, but did win a European Cup (now Champions League). The two big Welsh clubs have played in the Premier League, as the smaller population of Wales means to have a big club, it needs a bigger stage for financial security. There have been calls for big Scottish clubs to follow, but they have their own national tradition, though with a similar population to my county. I hope you end up picking a team outside the group that wanted this last year to leave to form a European Super League. West Ham could do well and they are the peoples' club in the East End, thinking of upcoming episodes of World at War.

"I grew up in an area where Leeds were not liked" - that could be anywhere lol. I also hope SoGal picks a team outside the 'super league' lot - Leicester would probably be a fairly good inoffensive choice and a team with a decent chance of some success. Otherwise there are plenty of good options in mid-table - Everton, Southampton, Wolves or Brighton could be reasonable shouts imo. On the two big Welsh clubs, sadly neither look too likely to reach the top flight in the next couple of years imo - both seem to be in periods of rebuilding. I'd love to see Cardiff back though (while I'm no fan of the club) - it's a city that lives and breathes sports and having a team in the Premiership is a huge boost for any city. On Leeds, I think Phil Hay (Scottish journalist who covered Leeds United in the local paper for 13 years) gives a good description in his final article for the Yorkshire Evening Post. A few excerpts below; "Following the city’s club makes you understand the city’s spirit. There’s a perception of Leeds being arrogant and deluded, of a sense of entitlement when it comes to football, but then you come here and discover its soul; a mixture of pride and salt of the earth. The place has a talent for introspection, which is to say that no matter how much people defend their club against the outside world, no-one is more critical of Leeds than the club’s support itself. ...my next job will have me writing about the club and the fact that 13 seasons haven’t tempted me to take a different direction says something about how intoxicating Elland Road is: not always healthy, not always good for you but highly addictive and impossible to leave alone; a place with soul and a place which captures your mind. An astonishing number of people despise Leeds United or what Leeds United stand for. But this club was never made for them."

@@NihilistCrab Points well made. I have previously asked SoGal to watch "The Damned United". On this note RIP Austin Mitchell who featured. With my suspicion she liked Chelsea, I also suggested "The Football Factory ". When Chelsea got back to the top division I walked past a bus stopped near Strangeways Prison by Manchester Police, full of Chelsea fans, as if warning the obviously rowdy passengers.
