Somewhere on Earth - Chile: • Amazing Quest: Stories...
Bolivia is the heart of the South American continent, a land of volcanoes and tropical jungles, where the sounds, the aromas and the colors are in harmony with a people descended from the Ancient Incas. With its rugged, dusty hues…. it’s also the land of colorful lakes, in the midst of the Andes mountains.
Erwann Guégan, a Frenchman who’s been living in Bolivia for 2 years. In Maipiri, a little village on the edge of the Amazon Basin, Erwann has been working on a project here that he is quite committed to the construction of a landing strip to open up the region and thus allow medical evacuations. For now, there’s no train or plane to access the valleys of the Yungas region, only a steep, twisting road and collective taxis crammed to the limit by their drivers.
Photography and archeology are Gabriela Escobar’s two passions in life. She quite naturally brought them together in one vast project: she travels the length and breadth of Bolivia to photograph every archeological site in the country, thus building up an inestimable data base for historians the world over. During her travels, she recaptures the poetry of the books that used to make her dream in her childhood.
The brothers Miguel and Diego Morales have set up a little company that organizes paragliding flights and mountain treks. Not long ago Miguel had a serious paragliding accident. When he got out of the hospital it was his brother Diego who encouraged him to start flying again. For Miguel’s comeback flight they gave themselves a challenge: to fly over the Salar de Uyuni, the vast salt flat in the far south west of the country. What is it they’re hoping to share together? Tons of dust, encounters and adventures in the country’s high altitude deserts.

We’re traveling an Amazing Quest today people! Bolivia is the heart of the South American continent, a land of volcanoes and tropical jungles, where the sounds, the aromas and the colors are so rich and vibrant, it blows your mind. The people, descended from the Ancient Incas, are welcoming, and truly heartfelt friendly. The land with its rugged, dusty hues, bright blue lakes, in the midst of the Andes mountains - breathtaking. Erwann Guégan lives there, a Frenchman who's been in Bolivia for 2 years. in this Somewhere On Earth episode, Erwann has some stories to tell about Bolivia and the Bolivians.

Bolivia in the 1960 was my home. It's so beautiful there. But it was also a bit of a war zone. As a child I witnessed the military massacre 1000 tin miners among other things. But I got to see a multitude of cultures there as a child as well. The country was 98% indigenous at the time. No tv. No fixed up roads for the trucks on tv now. It breaks my heart the damage that big gold mining does. Mi corazón se quedo en Bolivia.

Yes it was still very poor in 2000, when I lived there. They had a water stand off with corps that year, was a bit dangerous. But a very natural place, the mountains are phenomenal. It was a great experience for me, I think every person should live in a country very different from their own, at least once in their life.

I am a Cameroonian living in Cape Town, South Africa which is often sunny. The shot at 4:00 gave me nostalgic memories of growing up in Northwestern Cameroon because the terrain looks exactly like Cameroon : rolling green hills, banana trees and thick forests with dark clouds in the background and a glow of sunshine in the foreground. I just love it!

That is the old road to the town of Coroico. There is a new paved road in The beginning and faster. They left this road for some small towns and for tourism. Its still a very eery road. I remember we use to still go tru it in 1997 until they opened the new road But to go to South Yungas to Chulumani, the road remains the same, but not so scary as this one. My family brought land in South Yungas. It was quite a adventure on that land. We even discovered a ancient stone inca road tru it! Yes its true, when Foreigners go to Bolivia they fall in love and stay. We knew a French man who stayed in South Yungas and never left, he even said he hopes to find a nice sweet Cholita to marry. He was very a funny guy. Yes please go to Bolivia and help preserve its beauty! You can pick the cold or hot weather in one country.

Erwann Guégan has produced a beautiful documentary of Bolivia. The topography of Bolivia is made evident. The peoples of Bolivia are made known. A Frenchman making commentary in English about a Spanish speaking country. He clearly has many strings in his bow! When I left school at 18 in 1976, I deferred entry to University by one year to think about my undergraduate choice of study. My original intention was to travel from Rio de Janeiro to New York with pack on my back. It never happened, and I still have not visited South America. I ended up flying to Perth Western Australia, and from there, I travelled thousands of miles ending up in India.

Went on the road of death by bicycle, wouldn’t do it again but I survived. There was a airport there also, for a small village it was unusual, Che Guevara was buried under the airport until about a year befor I went. Then I think they took him back to Cuba. The rules are out the window in Boliva! It was slightly dangerous but a good adventure.
