Traveling Ecuador by train | DW Documentary

The train line through Ecuador is considered one of the most spectacular train lines in South America. A train journey of discovery.
The Trans-Andean railroad takes in the infamous Nariz del Diablo, or Devil’s Nose, a mountain with almost perpendicular walls. To overcome this obstacle, the train zigzags to ascend 500 meters in less than 12 kilometers. With steep ascents and descents, it’s no ride for the faint-hearted! The main line along the country’s Andean spine links the coastal city of Guayaquil with the capital Quito. It was finished in 1908, but was mostly shut down after a series of weather-related disasters destroyed much of the Ecuadorian rail network in the 1990s. After extensive restoration, a new cross-Andean service was opened in 2013, following the original narrow-gauge line. It’s 450 kilometers long and runs from the Pacific coast up to the Andean highlands. On its cross-country journey, the train is accompanied by guards on motorcycles who, in the absence of railway gates, stop traffic at every level crossing along the way to let the train pass. The Tren Crucero, - or "cruise train"- is the centerpiece of Ecuador’s rejuvenated railway. A revamped luxury steam train, it runs once a fortnight and has room for 54 passengers. The most exhilarating stretch of the ride begins deep down in the gorge of the River Chanchán. The train zigzags up the Nariz del Diablo - the "Devil's Nose" - in a series of dizzying switchbacks in which the tracks almost seem to lie on top of each other. Join the reporters for the ride of a lifetime, as the train journeys on to Urbina, the highest station at 3,609 meters above sea level, and along the so-called Avenue of Volcanoes, to the Cotopaxi National Park and onwards to Quito, the world's highest capital.

I am British and married to an Ecuadorian. It is a stunning country with some very friendly people, but if you are a visitor remember they also have poverty and crime. Those bike riders to the train are not just for traffic control, they are for protection.

Ok I know it, but when this film was done the Ecuador was the second county's safety in Latin America. Now my country is going through the high poverty and crime and the reason is because the Rich countries consume cocaine. The solution is simple, education for your people. We put the corpses and your nose....

@@scfplate6287 I agree there is the ignorance of the west that buying drugs causes. Ecuador's biggest problem is that your politicians and police are often corrupt. And of course now you have the Venezuelans invading your country. I wish you well.

Being in a Pandemic makes me realise that's there just still so much I need to see and do around the world, and there's no better way to do it other than by train. Luckily I still get great pleasure travelling the world in my living room.

There are many beautiful countries in the world, but out of the ones that I’ve visited Ecuador might be my favourite. In a relatively small area (especially for South American standards), you have the Amazon Jungle with some of the most biodiverse spots on the planet, the Andes with 10 mountains over 5,000 m, many nice beaches on the Pacific coast with both quieter places and busier party towns, cultural and colonial cities, market towns, Inca ruins, beautiful lakes, the Middle of the World monument etc. Plus there is a huge amount of cultural diversity.

yeah and another place with biodiversity is Tibet or Sichuan in China (by 50 kilometers you can see different views on 2000m 3000m and even higher)

I loved this docu, thank you DW, It's sad that you did not interview the security guards, they probably would have amazing stories to tell us. But its okay, many interviews, that ICE MAN, oh my god that poor ice man, 4000ft altitude getting 4euros per block, his donkey was just amazing, standing there, waiting to load up as if they are connected somehow invisibly, what a nice eye opener on simply another society, why dont you document quito a little more, that city looks astounding, and all those middle cities that you wizzed by. good job keep them coming

Fabulous, haunting background music... love this documentary! The greatest wealth in life is to be able to spend lots of time doing nothing and....... taking in a variety of sights and sounds as they are presented to one without any deliberations / plans. This can happen only in a pretty train journey like this! Love from Chennai (Madras), India!
