I have been working with stuff like this in cad, mostly hinges, and it's really addicting. I was creating stuff where I would put a thin aluminum bar thing through and use that as a hinge. I always thought print-in-place would be really weak but I redesigned one of my products to just print the whole hinge and it actually holds a lot of weight, far more than needed. I really like where 3d printing is going.

I'd lean toward the former until the printer is tuned. Then the latter comes into play. The surface finish on the TARDIS was meh at best. The phone stand looked good. Any (unpainted) FDM item can be picked apart. Like he said, we're pushing molten plastic through an orifice. Just how much precision can we realistically obtain.

I've had 4 Anycubic printers: 1) I3 Mega, I learned a lot, but not enough to avoid damage. Donated to High School, they got it running! 2) I3 Mega, I learned not to solder on live circuits! LCD smoke, don't breath it! Junked. 3) Anycubic Kossel (early edition). We do not speak of such things. Junked. 4) Mega X...longest term 'every day' printer, so far! My 'side-printer' these days is a MINGDA Rock 3 Pro. You're in Seattle? Me too! I have this idea about how to eliminate retraction in Bowden systems. Tiny servo at the hot-end plays with the location of its Bowden fitting relative to the nozzle. Extruder motor simply pushes filament or stops, no retraction! During a print move, servo pushing the Bowden fitting closer to the nozzle, flow will accelerate. Linear advance while speeding up. Once the hot-end is up to speed, the servo holds the fitting in position. Nice steady flow. Servo pulls fitting away from nozzle during print move, nozzle pressure is reduced. Linear advance while slowing down. Pull the fitting back quickly while stopping the extruder, retraction. Filament will not be passing through the extruder gears over and over, which should improve delivery accuracy. BONUS: Modulate the servo with 'video' data during print moves, and the line width is modulated. Paint pictures/Logos on your prints, lithophanes. Robert is you parents sibling.

On the e-step calibration it is going to be extremely difficult to get the exact amount you are extruding. I always have to print a hollow cube with double walls to correctly set the flow rate in Cura slicer to compensate for the offset. As for the bulging corners you may want to increase your acceleration and jerk speeds in your slicer. On my Ender 5+ I had to nearly double the acceleration and x4 my jerk speeds to negate the corner bulging. I never had much luck adjusting the junction deviation values, but have seen that work for some people.

Also, I just sliced this in Cura. 1 day 5hours 55 mins to print!! Not something I'm really willing to do without knowing if it will hold an iPhone 12 Pro Max in landscape.

My Vyper worked well for about 3 days, then it wouldn't give a good print, thanks to the folks on the Vyper Facebook forum I was able to determine the screw on the large gear in the extruder was loose, then Thanks to Dr. Vax KZread "MakeWithTech" I was able to re-calibrate the extruder and the temperature of the nozzle and bed--now it seems to be very good
