    Easy tip .....buy a $2 stainless steel soup ladle from the dollar shop and use it to scoop out the paint. ......... No cleanup, after a day the paint in the ladle will skin over, peel it off and bin it..........ladle is clean as a whistle and no crap in the lid of paint tin. Michaelangelo

    Ditto. I've been doing just that for years. Cheap, easy and cleaner. Also place some plastic wrap on the surface of partially filled cans to keep it from skinning over. Remove and toss come time to paint again.

    when closing it up you can lay poly film on the paint to slow oxygen transpiration and curing of the paint. Or you can waddle over to the Tig torch and gas it with argon and then close it.

    Doesn't a skin form in the can from exposure to air. I normally solve that by turning the can upsidedown, you cannot do that with holes in the rim. We must forgive them, for they know not what they do!. You should be looking into fitting a tap, (faucet) with a little bucket underneath, to catch the drips.

  • @ramosel
    @ramosel4 жыл бұрын

    Most paint stores have these little (1.5") molded plastic pieces. You slip it in the lid trough and run it around the can and it lifts all the paint up and over the lip and back in the can. Wipe it off, done. They have a hole so you can put them on a key chain.

    DON'T DO THIS if you are storing the paint for a long time in that can.. it will cause the paint to get thick and dry out sooner. and some cans will rust causing your paint matching to be off. Also, indoor latex paint that isn't sealed correctly can also begin to smell foul as mold and bacteria grow in it. Plastic containers with rubber seals are way better than the metal cans for storage. Just drawing on my years of experience as a residential and new construction painter.

    I realize this is an old video but hey, I found it. The tool I have found best is a spade drill bit. Use the smallest one with a center point and blades “perpendicular “to the top of the point. Usually this is the 1/2” one. 1/4 and 5/16 just have angled blades. Anyway, to the point, lol, on the 1/2” the point pierces the can and the top blade acts as a stop. The point, being triangular, doesn’t grab the can and releases easily when you pull it out to punch the next hole. Awls, punches, “ice picks” all stick in the hole, albeit slightly, but sometimes not. The spade bit just pops right out and pop pop pop right around the rim you go !

    I've ran into a number of cases where the stuff in a can is too viscous for this trick. I now consider it easier to buy, or 3d print, one of those pouring lips (it's like $1 at the home improvement box stores) In a pinch when paint out of a can I use a rubber band over the can to wipe the brush on the rubber band so everything stays in the can.

    Get a piece of plastic tubing that will squeeze into the groove. Pour away from where the tubing joins. Or paint straight from the can. When finished, wipe the top clean and remove and wipe the tubing clean (save for next time). The groove will remain clean and the lid will not stick.

    Maybe I am stupid, but I cannot see how the holes will help in terms of shelf life of the paint. I have "oil" (alkyd) based paints in steel cans (no holes) that I last used in the 90s and that are still OK. I am sure the solvents (mineral spirit) in them would have evaporated out in a few weeks (and the oxygen from the air would have polymerized the film forming compounds), had there been holes punched in the container... are we talking a different type of paint here?

    Take painters tape and tape up the top over the valley then take a knife along the inside to cut it to the inside diameter. The outside can just fold over. Then when all done pull the tape and done. And the lid will seal like it’s new. One step further is to tape a v shape to make it pour only one spot which keeps it from pouring 4” wide out of the can.

    Dang, i sooo wanted you to scoot over the spill down the side of the can with the brush plus pick up the spill past the coffee mug & return as much as possible... FWIW...Personally i have learned to always work from a pail rather than the original paintcan & to make a good pail is as simple as taking any freshly emptied can that you've totally cleaned out..... , chop the ring out with an old putty-knife, chisel etc and hammer all the jagged pieces flat to form a stout rim.... When working out of a pail, transferring just under half its volume from the can gives you much better control and zero chance of spills, drips when working heights especially etc....

    I have also used those plastic shields, but the BEST way is to use a small, disposable plastic cup and dip it in the can to get the paint you want. One or more dips and you have that paint in your smaller container. And there is no paint in that groove in the can or on the outside of it. And you just toss that cup away when the job is done. Nothing to clean up at all. And YES, I saw how you turned the wet area of the can away from the camera, as if to hide it. Yea, yea, you were just trying to show the dripping action. Everyone who believes that is invited to see some swamp land I have for sale in Florida. Or a nice bridge in NY State you can have for a song. But it was still a mess and that mess was not going to drip into the can via your holes. It was going to wind up on your bench. Speaking of on the bench, using a cup to ladle it out will also save that drip down the side of the smaller container which was already on your bench in the video.

    I can see two errors. 1) You opened the can with a screwdriver instead of a special tool ($1)that won't damage the lid. and 2) You poured the paint out on the side that has the directions. You can wipe it off with a rag or use the other side of the can. I learned those tricks from my friend Charlie.

    Not sure it will work on most paint cans. However when I finish with a can I put mine in a bag upside down and write a note on the base, such as blue bedroom 3 (etc). Idea being that if a skin forms, that will be at the base when flipped over to open. So having the holes wouldn't work for me.
