This is great, much better than my typical method of accidentally kicking the full can down the stairs.

😆Down the stairs, eh? I specialize in a type of can punt, wherein it flies in to the wall 🙄

I did that around midnight in a then illegal state of mind listening to the large full of paint bounce down the stairs in slow motion thinking so far so good till it got to the bottom then a sound I never heard before but imediatley recognised and there was the content all over the carpet. Nah, rolled another one covered the lot with wet newspapers so it wouldn't dry and went to bed. Next morning thought about how to rescue the carpets then came up with the idea. Went to hire place and hired wet carpet cleaner that soaks and sucks at the same times with the provided detergents............. Couldn't believe it worked and the machine didn't get wrecked. Happy days.

Thank you for not making this a 15 minute long video.
Good tip. One additional note...even on a new can of paint, wipe the top rim with a paper towel before you stick the tape on it. Mine had enough residue that the tape didn't stick well and it leaked. Wiping the rim and sealing the tape with good thumb pressure made it leak proof!

After 50 years of painting you come along with a tip that is so easy to use and one that solves a major problem that I have had in the past. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Now this is what KZread should be used for. Thanks for the tip. 👍
I have been professionally repairing house for a long time, including painting too. This tip in pouring paint out is the simplest and best trick in preventing an outcome I have ever seen. Thanks.
I’ve been decorating for over 40 years and only now find this genius idea!
This was seriously one of the best tips I've seen over the years on KZread. It's always been a pain in the butt dealing with paint getting on the rim of the can - or, on the side of the can - while pouring into a smaller can or paint tray. The nail-hole in the trough on the can's rim never quite works. And, lastly, your solution keeps most - if not all - paint from clogging up the rim which in turn will create a better seal when placing the lid back on the can. This will undoubtedly make your paint last significantly longer. Again, many thanks.
50 yrs 7th generation painter just learned something awesome thank you sir

I've been painting 50 yrs not 7 gens in 50 yrs
I’m 65 years old and never knew this. Thanks for making painting not such a bad job.
Just what I was looking for. Now I won’t have to worry about the lid making a tight seal
I wish I had been shown this 40 years ago. Genius yet so simple. Thank you.
It's always good to have a nice clean rim
Absolutely great. Now, a tip for you that I came up with myself. Never seen it anywhere. When you choose your color, get an extra of the paint swatch sample cards. Be sure to mark your exact color and put it behind the entry door switch plate cover when you reinstall the plate. That way you’ll always have the brand and exact to match any time in the future. If you can’t get the same brand, the store can color match off the color square

That is a good tip too. But if you do that, then you must remember you did it and where you put it. LOL My problem would be remembering.

That’s why you put it behind the switch plate cover. You’ll always remove the cover so it will be obvious and never get lost.

Paint a bit of the lid, so you can see, how it looks, once it's dry, as lomg as you have the paint. The cards aren't always acurate, especially after time.

I have worked with many professional painters, and yet this is the first time I have seen this. I love this idea, Simple and effective. Thanks for sharing.
Many thanks from a UK viewer. I have been filling the can rim and losing paint down the side of the can for 45 years, literally right up to the present day. This tip is genius! Thank you for sharing it.

And the crusty paint that forms around the lid and then falls into your paint is a ballache!
I qualified in the UK as a Hosuse Painter & Decorator in the 70s. Never paint directly out of a tin. Always decant into a paint kettle. Always tip paint out of the back of the can with the instructions and not over the side that tells you the paint colour. And just keep a clean rag and alway wipe the rim before returning the lid, unless you are going to use the whole can that day.

Why not use the brush to scoop paint out of lid? I'm proud to say I never use drop cloths.
@budte
Жыл бұрын
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 You do not paint directly out of a can for two reasons. The handles are designed to carry paint from the store to your car - not to be relied upon all day long and especially if you are up a ladder. Secondly, as soon as you remove the lid the paint is exposed to air and starts thickening/drying. If you paint out of the can then the paint you put on the rim will dry and the next time you come to use the paint it will have bits in it that will transfer to whatever you are painting. Same reason after decanting the paint into a kettle you wipe the rim with a clean cloth before returning the lid, instead of using a brush (unless water-based emulsion you are going to use up that day). Any paint left on the rim will dry and put bits into your paint. More important with oil-based paints and diyers who will be returning the can to the garden shed for months on end. Dropcloths are there for the respect of the customers property and anyone who never uses them does not know how to thin paint properly and isn't getting the finish achievable. Instant firing on my firm. As some one who has in the past hired and fired decorators these are the things that tell me quickly who are the painters who have learned their trade by apprenticeship and the chancers who were selling ice cream the week before.

I use a cardboard cup to pour my paint into and paint from that. No clean up..
Great example of sharing something relatively simple that can actually help a lot of people! Can't wait to try this, thanks for sharing.
Another tip is I always use a magic marker to Mark the lid and the rim so it goes back on at the same place that you took it off of. That may sound silly but it makes a difference believe me and I'm talking about a clean rim and lid it still makes a difference to get a perfect seal
Thank you! I knew there had to be a way without buying fancy plastic spouts.
Thanks. This has always driven me nuts.
I've watched a million things on tips and this was one of the best
Just what I was looking for. Thank you. My current painters tape is only about an inch wide so I'll just double up on it and make it wider to do this and make it work. No matter how much I try not to make a mess while pouring or anything to do with painting I do make a mess. But I'm going to try this method.
WOW!! Youre telling me for 40 year i could have been doing this!
YOU ARE A GENIUS! Why didn't somebody show me this years ago.
Danny is the man, old handyman here and glad this old dog just learned a new trick.
Easy and in my whole life I never figured this out. Great work.
This is one of those "gee, why the hell didn't I think of that?" moments! Thank you for such a great tip!
Have painted for 20 years & never thought of it.👍👍👍
Brilliant! Thank you so much, I was making too much of a mess everywhere!
Good useful tip! Everyone loves a nice clean rim!!
This worked so well! No mess at all.
This was the perfect tip that I needed and was looking for because I won’t be using the whole gallon of paint at once and was concerned about closing the lid with no mess. This was the first video that came up in my search and low and behold it’s Danny Lipford from today’s homeowner and I listen to the show every weekend on the radio and its very enjoyable and educational. That’s an automatic subscribe and like from me! Thanks!
Just tried it. Works just like he shows! Perfection.
Just adding to the chorus of praise. Many thanks!
I am just a DIY home renovator but my local paint store gave me a contractor account years ago because I paint so often. I have been trying to figure out how to not wreck the cans for so many years and tried this a few days ago and just came back to say thank you!!! It's not like I don't have tape handy and this made cleanup so much easier.
This will be my routine from now on. Thanks, this is a great idea to solve a pesky problem that ruins label information and worse, rusts the can lip
Best tip on KZread
I love this tip. Thank you, it's a great idea, simple but effective. I purchased these vinyl things that attach to the groove in the can but I have to either remove it to put the top on so the paint on the inside of the can where you poured it out doesn't dry or put a damp rag over the whole thing. Then you remove it when your done it is another thing that you need to clean.
Oh my word! So simple. I'll be doing this Sunday with a primer I need to apply. Thank you so much!
Geez, you win the internetz. This has got to be the most useful tip I've seen yet on any video that I can actually use. Thank you!
BEAUTIFUL! Just what I needed.
short, sweet & simple.
Simplicity in most this are usually the best.
great tip. Only a home handyman, but never too old to learn. Thank you.
I can't believe it. So simple. This guy just made my life so much better. Thank you.
Tried it today on a quart can. Worked great. Many thanks.
Simple and GENIUS !!!! Thank you for sharing!!
Awesome. This is exactly what I was looking for!
One of those crazy simple but creative solutions you cant believe you didn't think of before. :-) Thank you so much!
Man! I tried this today on a 4 litre paint can, it worked just perfectly, I cannot thank you enough for this simple yet brilliant solution. Not a drip was lost. Thanks for posting this 😀
Thank you! This comes second only to tying my shoes wrong for over 40 years, until I saw a video about square knot vs. granny knot. Seriously, I'm getting that masking tape today!
Thanks a lot! Right in time before my upcoming paint job next week.
Thank you for this solution we can utilized for years to come.
Jus tried it. Works like a champ!
Simple but brilliant idea.
I knew there had to be a better way to do this!! Thanks for proving me right. Your Video is excellent - right to the point and exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so so much for helping me manage my frustration with the “paint pour” 😃
So simple! I never thought to even ask if there was a better way to pour paint until a day or so ago.
This is worth a Nobel Prize!
genius!!! I wish I had know about this 30 years ago!
Just the solution, I needed. Thank you!
Great tip! I’ll most definitely use this next time. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing! No more putting nail holes in the rim, and having paper towels around to wipe off the mess. Thank you.
One of the very few videos on Useless Tube worth watching.
Always a day late, a dollar short. Just finished my painting projects and now I see this.
Simple and elegant! Thank you! 👍
Great Tip Pardner!!!
Oh my gosh, this is a fantastic tip! Thank you so much. Will use it today as I go to put primer on new drywall this afternoon. Again, thanks!
Excellent tip. It is simple but sure saves a lot of headaches later.
Fabulous idea! One of my pet peeves about painting is now solved!! Thank you for sharing.
Where have you been all these years! Thank you🙂🙂
So simple, yet brilliant. I’ll be using this great tip from now on! Saves all that time wasted on cleaning the rim after pouring. Thank you for posting. Great tip!!! Best regards from Northern Ireland in the Giant’s Causeway Coast. 😀👍☘️
Simple and delightful.
So simple, so brilliant. Thank you!
Wow! What a brilliant idea. I’m definitely going to do this in future. Thanks from the U.K.
I love learning tips like this!!! Thank you!
Genius mate!!! Exactly what I needed! Thanks
Great tip. So confident to pour the paint while wearing a nice purple shirt, BEAST!
Well, that just worked super well for me!! Thank you!! Some more helpful hints... Press the tape securely onto the rim. If you're pouring into a tray and you don't have a brush handy, I'd have the trash bin or a box nearby and place some cardboard or drop cloth down just in case. The mind acts stupid and tends to overact making more of a mess when paint starts dripping.

Why? It's water-based.
Thank you SO much for that! It’s another one of those things that irritates but I never took the time to figure out a solution.
Thank you, this is a very handy tip that I shall be putting into use immediately.
Great tip! ✨👍🏻💯No more sticky lids from the paint on the rim😊
Thanks, I never thought about doing this. I have always made a few holes inside the rim with a hammer and a nail. Any paint that gets in there runs back into the tin. It keeps it cleaner and you can shut the lid.
@oltedders

The plastic paint cans now being used are not as easy to use the nail holes in the rim method anymore. I used to do that myself. This tape method looks like a real winner.
I only have 1 word for you: GENIUS.
Thanks, Danny! Very helpful.
Awesome yet so simple tip. Thank you!
Brilliant tip! So often the dried paint on the tin obscures the usage and clean-up instructions impeding use at a later date.
Simply Brilliant! ThankYou
What a great and ingenious tip! Thanks for sharing it.
That's just brilliant. Thank you.
Nice 👍, now I can show this video to my guys, always cans dripping. Your videos r helpful for guys like me that r starting with a small painting company thanks. Lots of blessings 🙏🙏
I always pop holes with a small nail into the indentation around the rim. That way the paint can drip back into the can. You can run a brush around it to push the paint through the holes.
Thank you. This changed my life for the better!
This is great. Thanks very much for sharing!
You just saved me both time and money. Thank you
An excellent, smart tip! Thank you so much!
Very good tip/idea! Thanks for posting it.
I knew there was a hack for this, but couldn't remember what it was. Glad your video came up first and that it was short and to the point. Thank you kindly!
How simple! Excellent.
Amazing tip! Thank you for sharing!
