The period story got me fuming. The way OP describes the furniture as his makes me think they don't live together. So if I was OP, I'd tell him "well then on the days leading up to my period to when my period is officially over, I'm not coming over your place and you're not coming over mine. You wanna humiliate me and exile me to the guest bedroom because I'm on my period? Then I don't want to be around you." And if he tries to create a big deal over it, dump him like yesterday's trash! I was a super skinny guy as a teen and into my early 20s. People would comment on it all the time. Sometimes it was guys (HS) making fun because I was small and other times it was an offhand 'you're SO thin!" but the result was years of body dysmorphia and eating problems. So I don't comment on anyone's body even if I think it might be a compliment. You never know! People don't talk about body positivity in the opposite direction. Thanks, Joe! What a hero.

As far as the woman being made fun of for being skinny I definitely relate and got a little upset to be honest. People assume body shaming is only towards thicker people, but it also includes thin people. I'm 5'9" and in middle school I weighed about 110 pounds. I knew a guy who would make the class laugh by making fun of my weight. Saying things like "You're so skinny you could fall through the cracks in the floor" or "You're so skinny you'll blow away with the wind". In addition I also had people stare at me or ask "How are you so skinny?" or "Are you anorexic?" Which, no I wasn't. I couldn't gain weight no matter what I tried. I've heard this for years and even though not everyone is malicious when they address me, the guy from school who made fun of me planted that seed of insecurity in my mind. That was a decade ago and to this day I'm still insecure about my weight. I've put on some weight since then, but it's only because it's a side effect of my antidepressants. No matter what I will always think I'm "too skinny" and will assume when I enter a place and people are looking at me that they're judging my size.

I felt this with my soul. I'm 5'4" and on average, I weigh 104 pounds. I'm technically supposed to be over 110 pounds for my height. I've always struggled with gaining weight even when I lived in a household with the majority of my family being overweight because of genetics and diet. I got asked so many times if I'm bulimic or anorexic and it has made me feel really uncomfortable. My aunts would always comment on my weight and it's a bit frustrating. What bothers me even more is that from all the low self esteem my parents have instilled in them about their weight, they sometimes make comments wishing they were as skinny as me. I'm not insecure about my body in general, but my sisters are, and it makes me feel sad because I wish I could make them feel better about themselves. They are each beautiful in their own ways and it saddens me that they cannot see that.

His mother’s just not very good socially and likes to have quiet time to herself because she can only handle a small amount of socialising and his wife was constantly trying to force her into interactions she wasn’t comfortable with and smothering her and couldn’t understand why she wasn’t getting the reactions she wanted and he was trying to explain it to her.
