ALNWICK | Walk through Alnwick Town Centre to Alnwick Castle

ALNWICK | Walk through Alnwick Town Centre to Alnwick Castle
We explore Alnwick in Northumberland and walk to Alnwick Castle, famous as the filming location for Harry Potter Quidditch scenes as well as Downton Abbey and other big TV and film productions!
Alnwick is a market town in Northumberland, England, of which it is the traditional county town. Alnwick, in Northumberland, is a coastal town located 30 miles North of Newcastle and enjoys an exceptional setting near spectacular countryside. This beautiful town was voted 2016's Best Place to Live in Britain, as judged by Country Life
Visiting Alnwick, pronounced to sound like ‘panic’, is like stepping into a fairytale, where you can dine in the twinkling treetops of one of the world’s largest treehouses, fly a broomstick at Alnwick Castle, and visit a sleeping Giant at The Alnwick Garden
From broomsticks to bookshops, tree houses to cherry blossoms, and jousts to dragons, you can't miss the magic of the cobbled market town of Alnwick when you visit Northumberland.
Alnwick Castle is (quite literally) spellbinding, as its starring role as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry casts a hint of magic over the grounds. Spot Harry Potter wand-ering the corridors, have a guided tour led by Ron Weasley, and take a broomstick lesson on the very spot where Harry, Ron and Hermione learned to fly. Harry Potter aside, get lost in the history of the medieval architecture and opulent Italianate State Rooms of the Duchess of Northumberland’s family home.
Combine your visit with a trip to The Alnwick Garden, the enchanting site that holds 4000 different plants, a Grand Cascade, a mysterious Poison Garden and a seasonal cherry orchard. From the end of April - early May, the largest collection of Japanese Taihaku cherry blossoms in the world blooms here, so perch on one of the swinging benches and watch the delicate petals flutter in the breeze. Explore The Alnwick Treehouse, where indoor branches are intertwined with sparkling fairy lights and a flickering open fire takes centre stage. Those who are a little more adventurous can reach the restaurant via a wobbly bridge that becomes even more spectacular at night as fairy lights line the outdoor area.
Don't miss Bailiffgate Museum & Gallery, which holds over 10,000 years of history in its charming stone walls. Based in Alnwick's Castle Quarter, it was previously a church, meaning you can admire its beautiful architecture while you discover artefacts, photographs and audio visual displays that showcase fascinating stories through time.
Just a short walk through Alnwick’s winding streets and past the archway of Bondgate Tower, the only remaining chunk of the town walls, will take you to Barter Books. Undoubtedly one of the cosiest cafes in the county, this once Victorian railway station is now one of the biggest antiquarian bookshops in the UK. Settle into an armchair by the open fire and grab yourself a coffee as you immerse yourself in the literary world while toy trains chug above you.
Alnwick Castle was built in the 11th Century to control and protect the border, symbolising status and power for the new Norman barons across the country. The Percy Family still live in the castle today. Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, second only to Windsor Castle.
Alnwick Castle was used as a filming location of both the Philosopher's Stone and the Chamber of Secrets. Harry and his classmates learned to fly broomsticks on the Outer Bailey, which is also where Harry learned to play the wizarding sport Quidditch.

I lived in Alnwick for 10 years (to 1984) and would walk around the fields surrounding the castle. The town has certainly changed but still a lovely historical place with beautiful buildings.

I just wanted to let you know, i travelled to this country in april 2023. Edinburg, Glecoe, Isle of Sky, Glasgow, Alnwick, and a lot of places in between. Parked right in front of Baliffgate Museum and went to the castle. People were out in full capacity! And, a lot of our bring home souvenirs and gifts were purchased from a shop on Northgate!

Great video. I was born and brought up in Alnwick and although I no longer live there its still my favourite place. In my day there were a lot fewer cars even though it was the main A1 from London to Edinburgh. Narrowgate used to be one of the narrowest parts of the A1 until the bypass was built. The Hotspur statue was based on a model of the current Duke of Northumberland's eldest son. (My book Harry Hotspur - Border Knight has the other statue of Hotspur inside the castle on the front cover. Hotspur's life was somewhat different from Shakespeare 's version). Bow Alley is named after the Bow Burn (stream) which runs under it and used to flow into the castle moat. I was lucky as a child to go to Brownies in the castle - great fun and I still enjoy visiting. So glad you enjoyed your visit.

I love castles, and this one is one of the best I've been to! When I lived in England, my son, daughter and best friend came to visit. We took them here. They all loved it! In one of the courtyards was a Jester and a huge crowd. He chose my son to play along with him. It was hilarious because my son is so shy. The crowd loved it! Luckily we videoed it all for us to watch over and over. Great memories. Thanks for the trip back in time! Loved the town too, We didn't get to see much of it that day. I agree about the cobbles stones, They can be difficult to walk on but very unique to us Americans! :)

If I could give you more thumbs up for this, I would !! I have only been to Alnwick once, and we approached from the Castle end, popped into a pub for a meal and then left. I did note that it seemed a splendid place and would very much like to return, especially after this video as I obviously missed so much. Your 'undertaking' that lady was very smooth, I don't know what your singing voice is like so I'm not sure about the Beatles connection! And there were not only a pair of pants but 'Three-Pants' ha ha 🤩 I wish more towns had working water fountains, I believe there is some campaign to restore these. The Alnwick memorial (which I have driven past a cuppla times, is very unusual in that it is tri-cornered, very original. Harry Hotspur was, as you say, very detailed indeed. A lovely statue. Some brilliant architecture here, including obviously the Castle, which has been closed for some very considerable time - well, it was closed when I was there and that was b4 covid 😠 Once again thanks for the trip, enjoyed it muchly. Keep em coming 👍💯

My grandparents lived in a small town I think it was called Upper Bodington (could be the name of last town (?))and it was called the old school and from back of home you could see the castle. I live in the states and only visited a few times many many years ago. My grandparents passed years ago and lived outside of Banbury just before passing. My father just passed earlier this year and was my last lifeline to my heritage but many of my most fondest memories were in the more northern part of your great country My grandparents had a sketch made of "The Old School " prior to moving and last I was able to tell its a bed and breakfast now. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you for such a peaceful video that brings back amazing memories of some of my most fondest memories ❤️

I’ve never been to Alnwick but if my ancestry research is correct and I’m sure it is, the rather impressive statue of my 18th. great grandfather Sir Henry DePercy, 1st. Earl of Northumberland, aka Harry Hotspur, was the highlight of your walk. The castle looks stunning, looking up the prices it's a bit expensive but due to the fact it isn’t in ruins I'll forgive them.

Hotspur was not the 1st Earl of Northumberland. Hotspur's father was the first Earl. Also Hotspur was nothing like Shakespeare's portrayal of him as I mention in my short biography called Harry Hotspur - Border Knight (rrp £5.95). I was born and brought up in Alnwick abd learned a lot about him when I attended the old Duchess's Girl's Grammar School in Bailiffgate opposite Alnwick Castle and have done a lot of research into the life of the Percy family. Copies of my book are available from Alnwick Castle shop, Bailiffgate Museum and some independent booksellers or direct from me.

Hello! This castle is a building site at the moment! It's not worth visiting at the moment! An entrance fee of 20 Pounds and the missing permission of taking photos in the inside are two more reasons not to visit this place! ;-) Greetings Renate and Olaf #Trackbreaker
