Great to see Knaresborough again, the place where I spent a year as French assistant at King James’ s School in 1967- 1968. I had a wonderful time . I wonder if the folk club ,close to the railway station , still exists. It was simply marvellous! Thanks so much for the walk! Christiane.

I'm from the States and spent one night in Knaresborough this past October,I stayed at The Mitre Inn and was up by the castle, but spent most of my time by the riverside, and behind The Mitre. I'm happy to have seen some of the upper town as I didn't venture up there. I'll have to return some day and explore it in more detail. Staying at the Mitre was great for catching the train in the morning, took about 15 seconds from the hotel to the platform ! Also have to comment on leaving the sound track natural instead of having music, I love to hear the sounds of the people, cars , birds, it makes you feel like you are walking the streets yourself, thanks !

I am so lucky since my son now lives there so I get free B&B! It is a beautiful little town. No one seems to know why some of the buildings are painted in black and white squares. I even asked the town Crier in the Pub next to the station one day, even he didn't know!

Thank you! I grew up in York and often had days out in Knaresborough with my Grandparents. We did lots of walking. There used to be a small Zoo in town back then and we always finished good weather days at the castle, enjoying the views, a flask of tea and if we were really lucky; a bag of hot chips!

The owner of the private zoo was a very colourful character called Nik Nioka (spelling probably innacurate)who had great experience of working with animals but in an over casual way which brought him into official scrutiny and eventual closure..I recall he was collecting the entrance money from us. Very much hands on! He clearly loved his charges and knew their ways though I heard anacdotally that some of the more slippery ones had been on the point of leaving for a night on the town before being detained and returned to their enclosed life. I definitely recall the photo in the evening paper of him wreathed at the neck with a python or constrictor of uncertain intent. He must have been more circus than zoo...more Amazon than west yorks.

I've been waiting for this. Thanks! My first time there, I stayed for a week. The next year on my holiday I stayed for two. I love that town. I was supposed to go back last year as a kind of birthday present to myself, but the Covid got in the way. As it is, I don't know when I can come back. Another interesting place and story is St Robert's Cave, along Abbey Road. A bit of a walk though. Did you know that the four knights who murdered Thomas Becket fled to Knaresborough Castle for refuge? The history in that town is amazing. When I go, it's always September. The weather is nice, most of the tourists are gone, the kids are back in school, and hotel rates are lower. I feel so at home in that town, I think I could live there, but only for the warmer weather seasons. From the west coast of Canada here.

Freezing? Obviously, you have not been in Canada's North! How does minus 55C sound. Regardless, what a tremendously beautiful place. I hope to go there when all this Covid nonsense is behind us. Thanks to all healthcare providers around the globe. Cheers!

I discovered your channel yesterday. I’m loving the vibe of it. It’s like im really there. There is one thing however I don’t understand, why are Brit’s so obsessed with America? Its not that great and the uk has so much more interesting history. Also I’m Canadian and our country is better than America any day. 🇨🇦

Hiya! Thanks for the message and hope you're safe and well re America - I think it's simply that it features in more TV / Movies over the last 50 years that we see so it gets glamourised a lot!

Why don't king John's visit here and his being sharply rebuked by Robert, the famed holy hermit who lived in a hillside cave ever get a mention in visits here.?also that this was the refuge of those 3 knights after killing st.thomas a Becket..and the quaint cave -chapel in the hillside where mass is celebrated monthly

@@GimbalWalkTV yes queen elizabeth 1st hated them because of the smell from the process of dying and banned them from the city to the outskirts of a five mile radius. so it was a horrific job because no one would go near them an then being purple all the time did not help
