MORECAMBE BAY

Morecambe Bay in Lancaster, Lancashire is a seaside town that we've been asked to film so we grabbed the cameras and headed straight for Morecambe Beach and took a walk along the promenade from the Midland Hotel to the Eric Morecambe Statue! Come with us!
A day out in Morecambe is a relaxed affair from the sea lapping quietly up on the beach to the relaxing walk along the Promenade. A fab little seaside town in England, Morecambe has lots to offer so we'll explore and show you around!
Morecambe offers you the chance to enjoy the many pleasures of the seaside, whether it’s flying kites, building sandcastles or enjoying the views across the bay. Stroll along Morecambe’s award winning promenade with an ice cream or have fun seeing it on two wheels, before grabbing a picnic and heading on down to the beach for a spot of sandcastle making or kite flying.
Don’t forget to visit the Eric Morecambe Statue, which looks out across the promenade, and The Tern Project, a series of public art installations inspired by the birdlife of Morecambe Bay.
And, of course, there’s the 1930s Midland Hotel, the art deco masterpiece which has been lovingly restored in recent years. Enjoy an afternoon tea overlooking the panorama of the Bay, treat yourself to a glass of wine in the Rotunda bar, and visit the stunning Eric Gill artworks on display in the foyer and at the top of the sweeping staircase.
Time to eat? There’s plenty of scope for ice cream, fish and chips and other seaside fare whilst you amble along the seafront, but if you prefer to eat indoors then there’s an array of cafes and restaurants to tempt your taste buds.
Just up the road lies Happy Mount Park, where family-friendly attractions complement the atmosphere of peace and tranquillity of a traditional park. Swingboats, mini golf, trampolines, a miniature train, a splash park and a zip wire will keep the kids amused whilst you enjoy the park’s landscaped surroundings. Regent Park and the West End Gardens also offer places to walk, relax and have fun.
In the evening, The Platform is the place to go to take in a theatre show, comedy gig or concert.
If you’re in the mood for shopping, visit the boutique stores and gift shops along the Promenade. The town centre offers high street shopping whilst Central Drive Retail Park offers clothing, sportswear, gardening and homeware stores plus a large supermarket.
There are plenty of places to stay in Morecambe and many offer amazing sea views. For a comfortable and relaxing visit just browse our list of bed and breakfasts, guest houses, hotels, camping and self-catering accommodation.

Went to Morecambe with my parents in the 50's and 60's when it was at the height of popularity. Loved all my holidays and have a soft spot for it still. Good to see that it is improving. Particularly the Winter Gardens and Eden Project being built there where there used to be a large swimming pool where they used to have the "Miss Geat Britain" beauty contest in the summer. Used to be packed out. Also lovely promenade from Beare end to Heysham . Heysham village used to be popular where you could buy Nettle beer. Had two fantastic Pier, West End and Central pier. Spent a lot of time on the amusements on the West End Pier. Believe one of the piers was destroyed. There also used to be shows on the end of one of the piers. Great shows at the Wintergardens. And used to be the Palace Theatre by the Battery end on Sandylands Promenade. Used to go to the shows there on wet days when they used to.have matinées.. Also had the Floral Hall where I saw a number of popular bands at the time. Saw Manfred Mann there and also the resident band "Society of Gentlemen " who I later joined when their drummer left . Great times and wonderful memories. Really hope Morecambe becomes a wonderful seaside venue again . Thank you for the walk.

In the 60s we`d drive from Glasgow to spend weeks at a time going to Heysham, Marineland(where i lost my newly bought Superball,it`s black if you find it.)Moby Dick,Winter Gardens,Happy Mount Park and open air swimming, getting stuck in the sand playing Tarzan, the days were long and sunny, there was a great vibe though i was under 10,i can still hear 60s music when i think of those days. Please use cash before we lose it forever.

Wow this is a nostalgia trip. We used to live in Bridlington and then my parents decided to move. We first went over to Morecambe to look around and stayed there a few nights, after which we thought it was a bit too quiet and remote feeling, so we went down to Fleetwood / Blackpool area in the end, but I do remember Morecambe had a special kind of beauty about it - very open, a "big sky" feeling and also desolate, but in a beautiful way. Many years later I'm living in Spain right now but my girlfriend and I will be moving to Beverley this year, so I'll be close to my roots of Bridlington where a lot of my family still live. I'd love to see more areas around East Yorkshire again

I love Morecambe we have recently bought a static caravan between Lancaster Heysham and Morecambe and are up there a few days most weeks , we have the best of both worlds the historic city and the lovely seaside we take that walk regularly, from the top end of Morecambe along the seafront to the Midland Hotel or from Heysham along the front to the Midland Hotel..

You are correct and there was a fantastic pier. I visited many times in the 70s. There were the Illuminations. And for the children, there was Frontier Land. When I last visited in 2013, the Winter Gardens had a tour. It was fantastic. I hope Morecambe can revitalized. It has a wonderful seafront and the walk to Heysham is beautiful. The Council allowed Morecambe to rot. I do hope Morecambe is improving. When I last visited the locals would ask me why I was visited. I always enjoy your videos. All the best for 2022. Stay safe and take care.

I was born here in 1954 and this vid ends at the MHYC sailing club. Family heavily involved with that and in the 70's I was winning the local regattas. 90+ dinghies in those days.... I went on to be a teacher, Head of a Sailing Centre, then retired and have now sailed 75% of the world. Just dont like pirates so no records to set and time to swallow the anchor. Morecambe Bay inspired it all. Ta much for the video !

Only been 3 times (all in the summer) but love walking that promenade. The large open area you asked about near the start is where a funfair is located in warmer times. I actually assumed it was a permanent setup (obviously closed in winter) so it was interesting to see they pack up and leave when the tourist season is over.

Such a shame that Morecambe has gone downhill over the years. At least when Frontierland was still there it did draw in some people, but once that closed Morecambe went downhill even further. I stay at the lovely Midland Hotel when I go for a short break and it's lovely walking on the prom. Hopefully when the new Northern Eden project opens in 2024, visitors will flock to Morecambe once again.

@@fasthracing thank you that was it! There was little left back then, all boarded up, a huge concrete wasteland with what remained of a tall structure with Pepsi written on it I think. Next to that was a supermarket apparently on the site of the old railway station? Is the old fairground gone now do you know?

@@barcyorky The ground where Frontierland was is still empty sadly, there have been a few attempts to do something with the land over the years but nothing has stuck. Council now has taken ownership of it so mayyybe something will happen with it at some point. The Polo tower was stood there for many years after Frontierland was closed due to the phone mast at the top, that has now been demolished (and probably for the best was looking... somewhat worse for wear by the end shall we say!). There is now a seasonal fairground where bubbles used to stand (as mentioned in the video) but that is all packed up and away through the winter months leaving the large empty space we saw here lol. This will hopefully be the site of the new Eden project North but it is still in the planning and approval stages so we just have to wait and see.

The problem with Morecambe is that it isn't down south the talk of leveling up is just that talk I lived here from the sixties till the late seventies and moved away it was just beginning to turn into a dump then have been back a few times since and the place is getting worse since Lancaster city council took over running it they have abandoned it and left it to rot they are only interested in student accommodation in Lancaster and they still have the worse one way system of any place I have driven around afraid the Eden project is just talk that is all .

Morecambe in the 90s was fine, not quite Blackpool but acceptable. Made big mistake going there in 2017, the council has destroyed it, they have removed it's unique character and were building a supermarket on the front. I will never bother to visit there again.
