I feel like the "f the patriarchy line" has to do with the expectations he put on her. He's "empowering" her by letting her drive and do other "traditionally masculine things," but he's doing it on his terms, not hers. The most interesting part to me is the "key chain on the ground line." This implies that either she did not catch the keys in the first place or she later dropped them. Whether his expectations were too heavy for her to carry or too difficult to grasp in the first place, she ended up disappointing him because she could not live up to his perceived idea of a "strong, independent woman." Compare this to how Taylor describes her relationship in the Lover album, how she has embraced her femininity and independence on her own terms. And not only this, she receives support and validation from her significant other, rather than permission.

My favorite thing about the video was the gaslighting scene. Now I interpret her saying I was there, I remember it differently. I used to think it was just reminiscing but now I see it as like “you gaslighted me and tried to convince me that that’s not what happened but I was there and I remember it and I realized what you were doing when I was outside of the relationship.”

Yes the she's wearing the iconic red lipstick, black top and the red's ring with wine to put the cherry on top and I'm here for it!!!

Something just clicked for me when you said, "I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to." It reminds me of Better Man, especially where she says, "Saying to myself, you know you had to do it/I know the bravest thing I ever did was run." Like in BM she has to keep reminding herself why it's better that it's over, and ATW she's saying if she forgets about him she can forget why it had to be over. Two sides of the same emotion. There are a lot of parallels between the two songs, in my opinion!

I think she hints at the gaslighting and the feeling like it wasn't real at the start of the music video it's like "are you real? I feel like I made you up" It's like she feels it all happened so quickly and it also links to lyrics in the song red "loving him was like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street"

It's so cool to listen to someone who is as deeply into something as you are! I love how the whole Red basically tells us a story. On 1989 we have secret messages that do something similar but on Red the songs are actually connected with each other. I'm really glad that I could listen to your thoughts about this song. I feel like my friends are pretty tired of me talking about Taylor so it's nice to see that there are more people obsessed with her :)

I feel differently about the "i forget about you long enough, to forget why I needed to" line. I see it in a way that she has begun to move forward from the pain of it, for a good amount of time (i forget about you long enough), that the anger and upset etc is reduced. That she then starts reflecting on the good aspects of the relationship more, not hanging so much on the hurt, then (i forget about why i needed to). Leading beautifully back into the good memory and next lines "cause there we are again, in the middle of the night, dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light". I've really enjoyed this video, and the rest of the interpretations of the song. Obviously everyone's opinion is different, so I'm not saying I'm right, it's just how I picture it.

i totally relate with the lyrics of the all too well 10 min version because this thing happened to me! Especially the part when nena says about jake gaslighting her telling that it wasn't true love, but taylor says she "remembers it all too well" and it was love, and magical, and MUTUAL.

i saw someone say that the lyric ‘i still remember the first fall of snow and how it glistened as it fell’ was a callback to treacherous where she knew that the relationship was going to end badly, but it was still good and still real.

I loved it, i watch it as i was having breakfast on my break and i didn´t realize the 28 minutes were gone, so acurate your breakdown, i hope you can make more.

Some people say that "Brooklyn broke" is meant to poke at his fake hipster way of dressing. I like that theory, it does fit with his persona. It's also possible (but maybe a bit of a stretch) that if the rest of that verse compares their relationship with going to war, "Brooklyn" could be the alcoholic drink, like a metonymy to drinking. As in a way to say whenever he drank, their fights would get worse.

And she is probably saying that she doesn’t have thick skin, which is why she mentioned that his Brooklyn broke her skin and bones. So every time they had an argument, she compares it to a battle because after all these arguments were his “Brooklyn broke [her] skin and bones” she gave it her all in those battles to the point where she feels like a soldier that’s returning half her weight.
