I have to correct an error regarding the info of this performance. Publications erroneously reported Los Lobos backed Krauss and Plant, but I (only recently 😬😅) found out it was actually The Tarbox Ramblers.

I recall hearing my father hum n sing this song to himself as he worked at something. 50's, 60's, 70's and on...goes way back, way way back.

Listen to Lead Belly sing this, too, especially since this is at a tribute to him. This is such an old and eerie song. I believe it’s a murder ballad in Appalachian tradition. After listening to several versions, including Nirvana’s, I’m still not sure whether the girl is also dead or not. Did she kill her husband, or did she only find him? Is she in the pines because of grief or guilt? Or, did the male singer kill both of them, so she’s lying cold and dead in the pines? My answer varies depending on who is singing the song. That is part of what makes this haunting song so great.

I totally agree. The mystery is part of what makes this song so haunting.

Go further back, 1926 back, Dock Walsh. Leadbelly took the music and added a murder narration to it. In 1944 I believe the year. So who copied who? Do the math. Same tune, different words. Shannon's Denny.

@@shannonburns6724 I just listened to Dock Walsh’s version; thank you so much for the reference. Nice catch! I knew it was “an old and eerie song”, as I said in my comment. I don’t think I’d use the word copy as regards this song, as well as many others. I’d use the word cover. Music was passed down as an oral tradition, so each artist put their own interpretation to it. It’s fascinating to see the song evolve through the ages. Thank you again.

Am I the only person who thinks this cheap imitation and outright putrid version of Dock Walsh's 1926 recording is something worth listening too? Give me a break, my ears could not stand 20 seconds of this. They both can and have sung good to great songs. But this, I am sorry to burst your delusional bubble, is the stuff that makes dogs howl. Shannon's Denny.🥵
