It's worth noting that the dead humanoid they found on the derelict, the "space jockey": in that and other scenes of the crew in suits, they were often children to make the set look bigger. It's most obvious when the expedition finds the space jockey. Look at the size of the jockey's head compared to Dallas's helmet in the wide shot. It's much larger. But when they cut in close, they're nearly the same size.

Although Alien had none, CGI has been used in movies since 1958 and 3D CGI was first used in 1972. The common misconception that CGI somehow "didn't exist back then" has mostly been pushed by fans of Star Wars and The Thing to give their grails more credibility.

@@shaitanlavey Star Trek 2 has a lengthy CGI sequence, the simulation of the Genesis device terraforming a planet. It actually still holds up well, in large part because in story it's a CGI simulation. I think what people really despise at CGI isn't when it started being used, just so much of it looks cheap and obvious. The bugs in Starship Troopers were CGI, but it looks spectacular.

Gotta remember, the crew was basically a space tugboat crew. Totally not trained or equipped for an alien encounter. There are so many callbacks to this movie in other shows including Spaceballs, Galaxy Quest, Stargate Atlantis, and others. There's bound to be a reference somewhere in Big Bang Theory too. This movie was huge. The xenomorph uses DNA from the host, which explains how it changed with different hosts, and also gained knowledge, as it would quickly understand other species.

Yes. They're just all rando's working a crappy job hauling freight. They aren't even supposed to be awake for most of the voyage. Most everything's automated, and the living quarters make up a tiny percentage of the MASSIVE area of the ship. Another comparison would be "Space Truckers," which is a crazy weird movie in its own right!

The cat, Jones, appears in earlier scenes, before his jump scare moment, like when the crew is eating breakfast after just waking up. A lot of sailing ships kept cats on board to cut down on rodents and other pests, and even now, they're pretty effective in warehouses and on farms, so it makes sense to me they might have one on a ship hauling freight. Also, I imagine it might be comforting to the crew as well, so far from Earth. As a cat lover, I might go to some pretty stupid lengths to try to save my cat from an alien. 😅

Curious to see your reactions.....definately not star wars, not predator.....This is a whole different game!!! There are a number of sequels to this film all but one are good, but still worth a watch to get the full Ripley story line. Possibly one of the best series of movies...especially considered the length of time theyve been telling this story. My family owns a home audio video business, and well before there were video stores to rent movies at, my father would have customers bringing in bootleg versions of movies that he would bring home. I was only 9 when this came out, and my parents wouldnt let my sister and I watch such movies.....But, I would sneak downstairs and hide so my parents couldnt see me to watch movies. This movie scared the hell out of me as I sat in the dark and couldnt make a sound, otherwise theyd have caught me out of bed watching and Id have gotten in trouble. I had problems sleeping for a LONG time after seeing this, but couldnt tell them why I was so scared. Even now, its still an excellent movie and pretty scary, but back in 79' , no one had made a movie like this, and my big imagination just made the horrors go on night after night, thinking an alien was coming.

If they don't blow it up, the "company" can remote control the ship back to Earth. She did not have enough food and water on the escape pod to remain awake, deep sleep conserves the bodily integrity during space travel. The 2nd movie is better the 3rd a tad weird, but, IMO, still good. Aliens, Alien Resurrection.

Alien is a horror classic! It’s a bit of a slow burn, but that’s what makes it suspenseful. A lot of what makes the movie unique is all of the mysteries: “where did the alien spacecraft come from? why was the dead pilot carrying the eggs? why is that parasite keeping Kane alive? What is the creatures motivation?” Like Ash says, “you still don’t know what you’re dealing with” and it’s interesting how even the filmmakers had ideas about why the creature moved slowly at the end but left it up to interpretation. The design of the Alien is like something out of a nightmare, and the filmmakers were heavily influenced by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft whose themes involved human’s curiosity exposing them to the dangers of an uncaring universe filled with incomprehensible horrors. Fun Fact: I’m not sure if you guys are aware but you the Director of “Alien” was Englishman Ridley Scott who directed “Kingdom of Heaven” and “Black Hawk Down.” And I’m excited for you guys to see the sequel “Aliens” because it was directed by a Canadian filmmaker James Cameron who did “Terminator” and “T2”. Oh, and keep making jokes. I laughed out loud at the “what is that? A Nokia?” 😂

Ooooohhhh, you picked the right version to watch. When you watch Aliens, watch the special edition. If you want a couple of other alien movies to watch, Critters 1 & 2, Spaced Invaders, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, The Guyver, Explorers (1985, Ethan Hawke), The Thing, Buckaroo Banzai

The second movie is even better than this, and has a different director. The guy who directed the first two Terminator movies made the second Aliens movie. The plot is much better, and the motivations of the characters make more sense. I think you will really like it.

Personally, I prefer the theatrical version of this movie, without the cut scenes added back in. It's a tighter movie, and most of the extra scenes don't add much. When Ripley finds the alien's nest, for instance -- it's not in the original release, so there's just a lot more focus on her GTFOing it off the ship. We know everyone's dead, but we don't see those last grizzly details. It's also a surprise, in the sequal, when the audience finds out about the nests. It's a surprise to Ripley too, which doesn't make much sense with the scene added back into the 1st one. Sometimes, I think modern movies should learn to cut more. Lastly, this movie is worth rewatching. There are a lot of complex details that can get missed the first time, when you're caught in the suspense, and more things make sense in hind sight.

Fun fact: when they were filming the chest burster scene they didn't tell the cast what was going to happen, so the looks of abject terror are genuine :) .

You'll love the next one, 'Aliens'. They weren't a stupid crew, they were a Mining crew not astronauts. The Alien took on human characteristics because it was birthed by a human. The whole movie was to represent Major Corporations and their lack of humanity. Watch it again and you'll learn more each time. Enjoy!!

Love how everyone you know, says the crew was so lax, and making bad decisions, but isn't that with most horror,.and the thing about this movie, that was kinda the point, Ridley Scott made sure he landed how calm they were all about hurling through space, it was just another day, just another haul, they had no reason to think, this trip wouldn't be the same old trip, job,..and the only science officer on board, who was really working actively against their survival, wasn't going to tell them otherwise,..the sets you see for the movie, were built like a working ship, real hallways, corridors, ladders leading to corridors,..real food galley, Sigourney, the actress in a behind the scenes look at the movie, expressed really getting lost, turned around when they filmed this, and you can imagine really being disoriented filming that escape scene, with all the flashing lights, smoke, dark hall,..it's a masterpiece in filmmaking, the scene with the creature bursting through Kane's chest, no one but Scott, and most likely actor John Hurt, knew it was gonna be that gorey,..do check out the sequel, you won't be disappointed,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
