This has nothing to do with colonialism. This was a humanitarian mission that got caught in the middle of A civil war A famine and civil war broke out In Somalia in 1992 after a drought and the Communist government falling when the Soviet union fell and no longer propped up the Somalian communist party with funding. Almost 200,000 Somalis died before American or UN troops got there. The United Nations sent a humanitarian relief effort to provide food, medical help and protection. To the people of Somalia. Besides the US sending doctors and troops many other countries in Europe,.The middle East and Africa did including many Muslim countries like Pakistan, Egyot, Malaysia, Tunisia, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. The June before the mission. Depicted in the movie the Habr Hidr tribe, one of the tribes fighting for control of the country ambushed and Killed 23 Pakistani(so fellow Muslims) soldiers who where part of the United nations peacekeeping force who had gone to inspect a warehouse thought to be used by the Habr gidr to store weapons. The US who was a ally of The Pakistani government so this attack as a escalation by The Habr Gidr and there leader Mohammed Farrah adid and over the next few months more attacks against UN personnel and Somali civilians continued. President Clinton authorized a mission to capture or kill Aidid, the leader of the Habr Gidr and the US military sent a task force not under IN authority by under the authority of US special operations command to hunt for Aidid and the tribes leaders. This is the task force in the film it was called Task force Ranger (as the 75th ranger regiment made up the bulk of the force) and was mostly troops from the sent - the bulk was a company from the 75th ranger regiment(the younger guys with the shaved heads). As well as a squadron from the Armies most elite unit Delta force(the guys who where the black hockey style helmets and carry the m-4 style carbines) and the United States best helicopter pilots then members of the 160th Speical operations aviation regiment but also include a few navy Seals and some air force special operations units(particularly combat medics and combat controllers) and some members of US army Intelligence and the CIA special activities division. The US did not authorise the the hunting to the leadership of the Habr Gidr tribe till the Habr Gidr tribe had Murdered 23 Pakistani Muslims!

He said afterward that he was scared as hell and kept wanting to duck, but made the conscious decision & made a purposeful effort to stay upright & walking calmly anyway for the sake of his men. Demonstrating calm & composure helped keep his soldiers calm & composed as well.

The Somalis were fighting each other in a civil war. The civil war stopped farming in Somalia, which caused a famine. The UN sent food to feed the starving Somali people. Pakistan, Malaysia, and Indonesia sent soldiers to help the UN food distribution. Warlord Aidid started attacking UN food distribution operations in an effort to take food for his soldiers. The UN asked the US for help protecting their food distribution. The US was involved only at the request of the UN, and only to stop the attacks on UN food distribution. The US and UN did not make any effort to intervene in the civil war or support any particular faction except to try to stop Aidid's attacks on the UN food operations. Sorry to disappoint your world view, but this was not anything to do with colonialism or religion. It was about one bad Somali leader hurting his own people because he wanted political power..

Somalia was mainly a fishing community. Chinese ships destroyed their oceans by over fishing by dredging nets destroying their fisheries and using it as dumping grounds for harmful chemicals. As far as I remember that sent Somalia into tailspin. Even the Somali pirates came to be because of that, they were just trying to save their only way of life.

Later he joined the police force or sheriffs department in Florida and is retired now for some time. The reason why everyone was attacking them was also because Aidid had set a bounty for every dead US-soldier.

Little known information about this entire incident, there were Malaysians who were VITAL, to the evacuation of the US soldiers, they've gone down in the annals of Delta and Ranger history, they showed a resolve to save American lives that no other nationals have shown before, the Malays were extremely angry with both US, UN, and Malay command for not letting them go out in force to help(many were held back "for their safety"), they wanted and were prepared to go in with everything they possibly could to save lives. The Pakistani's were as well, but they were more hesitant to commit men out of anger of not being involved from the beginning. Many Americans have no idea about the Malaysians involvement in the incident.

I had not realized that Rwanda was majority Christian and that both sides of the conflict, both Tutsi and Hutu were mostly Christian. Of the denominations in the country, only Jehovah's Witnesses did not participate in the killing. There is a lot more he says, but TL;DR for the comment section.

Somalia got weapons from the Soviet Union After a Communist Revolution there. This fell apart into Civil war between clans. In theory there were elections but the parties were on clan lines so it all went to hell. Somalis knew how to fight at least each other. They did get outside help. In 1991, Osama Bin Laden went to Somalia because the Saudis were after him. And there, The newly formed Al-Qaeda taught their host Somali clans techniques. They had learned in Afghanistan fighting the Soviets including using RPGs against helicopters. The Americans called the Somalis "skinnies" because they were skinny and many were starving. The whole situation is really tragic. During the Civil War, Muhammad Farah Adid sent one of his wives and surviving sons to the United States. Hussein Farrah Aidid became an American Marine and acted as a translator a few months earlier during the first American intervention in Somalia. He was literally translating Somali to English for the Americans, while they were trying to negotiate with his father party/clan. After his father died, he would eventually take over as leader of the clan and party. Life is stranger than fiction

    @Thane3642513 күн бұрын

That was a good guess about this having been a setup. There really isn't any proof that I've seen, but it does look that way. The task force had launched several missions prior to this one and they always followed a basic template. Some variation was added but it was basically the same. Several of those missions were dry holes or wrong targets. For example, the Somalis fired mortars from an NGO compound they broke in to and fhe Rangers came to it and other time they were told a UN compound was an enemy compound and they went there, too. They were also being closely watched. The land rose up from the coast where the airport was and so there were countless vantage points to watch from. The task force also flew many false missions to try to keep Aidid's men guessing, but these also angered the other citizens. But they figured out how to tell which flights were real and which weren't. It was also believed that there were some foreigners there coaching Aidid's men and maybe actively fighting. Tactics such as shooting for the tail rotor is one clue, even though just about any RPG hit on a Blackhawk would do to at least make it have to leave the fight. So was this a set up? It very well could have been. If their communications and discipline had been better they could have trapped and wrecked the convoy. That second group that left the airfield, the one with the man with the cast, actually ran into an ambush that did a lot of damage and if the Somalis had not triggered it too early, it could have been very bad. As it was, they had been hoping to bring down a Blackhawk knowing rescuers would go to it. Then they could trap and attack them and the other units that came to get them. This is basically what they did, but as noted, their communications and lack of discipline let them down. 10th Mountain did know the Rangers had gone in and were in trouble. However, they had to take a long way around the outside of the city to get to the airfield because going through the city was impossible. All they had was Humvs and truck like the Rangers, no tanks or armor. That route took time, but they got there sooner than the movie implies. The Humv doors were supposed to be bullet proof but turned out not to be. Many bullets came through them. The Rangers had actually considerd removing the doors before this mission so they could get in and out more easily. Shields were also available for the turret gunners but these were not used for some reason.

The general was stuck between orders from above and his men. He had a bad spot as the orders from above had to work within UN guidelines as well. Believe me if you told that general he had full ability to do whatever he wanted you'd like what happened a lot less and it wouldn't have gone down like this. Like the one guy said it's war. The people don't always understand when folks are trying to help them from their own bullies within (Aidid stealing the rations and supplies) though don't get me wrong we stick our nose into things that we have no business. We created Hussein then took him out when he had nothing to do with what we 9/11 but bad actors in our government wanted opportunity there. We support Saudi bombing in Yemen which is horrible. We do horror and heroics and it's maddening. It would be nice if we were a more civilly engaged population with more control over how our government/military comports itself but we aren't which is what I'd hazard to guess is the same with most countries. Folks just want to work go home raise their kids and enjoy their lives. Just like anyone and most are oblivious to what their government really does completely. But say Afghanistan. I feel that was justified. We asked for Bin Laden to be given over. They said no and we went in. Foolishly trying to stay. Afghani's have been ousting invaders since the 1600's France, Britain, Russia. So trying to build a nation failed for all the corruption and the Taliban had it easy to sweep in especially when trump made a one sided deal with them. reduced our troop strength so going back in was out of the question and released 5k taliban fighters and their leader. It was doomed to failure as every pro American Afghani saw that as a signal to drop things and get out and everything crumbled. We aren't always the good guys. But by far we are not always the bad guys. I fail to see any shining bastions of purity in any government. I mean if our noses weren't in Ukraine right now they would have crumbled and Putin would be moving on the next target which would be NATO and a beginning to WW3. And I'd have to say I don't see folks from around the world clamoring to get into Russia or China. So we have to be doing something right. But we are far from perfect that is a surity. We let MBS chop a dude up in an embassy in Turkey just for criticizing the Prince's mistreatment of his people, and we still support Saudi. We created Bin Ladin by supporting Saudi during the first Iraq war when Bin Ladin had offered his mujihadeen to protect the country and the king went with the Americans as their shield that was an insult that resulted in 9/11. We have a long way to go.

As crazy as it sounds, everything in this movie really did happen almost exactly as you saw it. And this whole thing happened because Adid was causing a genocidal amount of death. As for why the soldiers wanted to go back in, it was to get adid, but also to rescue their comrade, Mike Durant.

What's funny about the part where they talk about Somalias owing the family of someone they killed camels in recompense for the death, is that Europeans specifically the Anglo Saxons, Germans, and Scandinavian peoles (many of the white American soldiers would in fact be descendants of these cultures ) did the same thing, in old English it was known as Weregild. Basically the sea was you pay the family of a person you kill I order to prevent the death from causing a blood feud that could last generations

The soldiers with the black helmets are mostly members of the Combat Applications Group(CAG) formerly Known as 1st special operations detachment -Delta aka Delta Force,(the US armies elite counter terrorist and direct action force), there where also a few members of Navy Deal team Six(now known as DEVGRU) the Navy's equivalent unit to Delts force (and the US unit that would kill Bin Laden), as well as a small number of Air force special operations troops specifically Combat Controllers(who can guide in aircraft like planes and helicopters to targets) and Pararescuement(combat medics trained to go into battle via parachute or helicopter)

I watch you guys all the time... I love you two. You always make me smile. I normally "like" without any post. With that said.... 300,000 Thousand People Killed...Children, Women and Men Killed. Famine. Civil War. You think Americans bully and colonize by risking their lives to feed the children, women & men who are starving to death. (?) You even discussed if you would fight for their brothers/ comrades. If you would "go back". (?) The innocent people dying and starving to death can only hope that you would. WOW. Habibi Brothers you mention "money".... What "money"? We are not hired hands nor militia groups. We do not take hostages for money. We do capture and imprison war criminals. That saddens me. You both watched the humanitarian operation in the beginning. Wow. You do not understand a free people (nation)...nor that freedoms are not free but are often fought for...most times with lives lost. Liberations. Liberated. Liberties. This is not a "money" exchange. Houses, land nor money provides freedom nor liberties, but the liberated Brothers and Sisters united protecting and serving. America does not covet Somalia nor their dictators and oppressors. Finally, everything is not about money. You cannot buy what Americans continue to fight for lest all countries would have these freedoms they desire. America is known to give BILLIONS of dollars amongst other humanitarian resources to countries whether they are our Allies or whether the country is even hostile toward us. You even discussed if you would fight for your brothers/ comrades. If you would "go back". The innocent people dying and starving to death can only hope that you would. I hope you understand my American heart for my brothers and sister and global citizens in much need for humanitarian resources. Like Israel and Gaza... Hamas has caused such a tragedy. I never hear anyone address Hamas. Both nations are suffering and unfortunately, will continue until Hamas stop using Palestine as a political human shield. However, that is going to take Palestinas to say, "ENOUGH! Hamas, ENOUGH"

The guys in black vest/helmets/knee pads are Delta Force, at this time in US HIstory this unit the Government denied they existed. Basically, the best of the best of the best. They make US Navy Seals look bad supposedly. It's also why many of the actors portraying Delta Force act above authority, even when dealing with higher ranking US Army Ranger Officers. US Army Rangers are already considered an above average unit within the US Military and Delta is way above them. I really love how they take charge regardless of rank as well, you see the Delta men literally doing their job very well even if they have to go over the heads of the US Ranger Officers.

Because that's Hollywood. My dad once described to me being shot down on a helicopter and that is horrifying. He wasn't a crew member but one of the grunts onboard. So yeah getting shot down in a chopper sucks.

One of the things about the actual historical event that wasn't mentioned in the movie was that many of the somali fighters were chewing khat, which is a local drug. It made them feel good, almost invincible, got them excited, and reduced their nervousness. This is one of the reasons why they rushed American troops so eagerly, but it also affected their firing accuracy. While the American firepower and training drastically affected how many deaths there were on each side(1000 somali fighters-19 US soldiers) this drug also played a big part.

I read Mark Bowdens Blackhawk down before the movie was even made. And the craziness of the battle wasn't portrayed in the movie, it was much worse. And as for Colonel McKnights bravery in combat, he did really walk around like that. Several accounts refer to it. As for the Ranger who fell, Todd Blackburn, there was no RPG, he just fell, no one saw how he fell. As for Grimes the RPG magnet by the end of the fight when they got to the stadium he had no pants left, they completely shredded by the multiple RPG blasts, he was essentially naked from waist down. So many other crazy parts to this story it's hard to believe. If it hadn't been for the little birds and Cobras making strafing runs all night the Rangers would have very likely been overrun. An incredible story of bravery and the bond of combat. I enjoyed your video, thanks

God forbid you ever have to choose between being starved to death by a power hungry warlord and "accepting" our "interference" as our soldiers risk their lives to feed and liberate you. I swear, it's the same thing year after year. Our cemeteries get filled with young Americans who are dying in other countries for people who don't respect or appreciate their sacrifice. America should close it's borders and finally turn inward and forget the rest of the world who hates us and can't stop killing itself. 😡

The US wasn't there for religious or political reasons. Farah the militaristic dictator was seizing food that was donated by UN forces to feed the civilian population during the famine. Farah attacked the food distribution, took the food and weaponized it by only feeding people who would fight for him. The UN realizing the potential millions of innocent civilians who would starve if nothing was done asked the US for help. This operation wasn't for oil, religion, or colonialism, it was purely humanitarian and the US only got involved through request. I criticise a lot of US involvements and wars, but this was purely to help civilians.

This is a complex subject. Yes, the superpowers are often corrupt, and look after thier own interests first. On the other hand, wars are like bushfires .. you send firemen to try to put out fires .. this is what the UN is trying to do. To try to save innocents, to bring Law to the lawless places of the earth. Ofc it doesnt always work out that way, ofc it its often corrupted by greed and special interests. And sometimes the wars are extremely unjust, the cure sometimes worse than the disease. Should we therefore let fires burn unchecked? How can we while innocent people are dying? Its not perfect .. but its the "least worst" system we have so far.

The phones the military uses cannot be called back, because the communications use military sats. Is why she didn't call back. The AK47's a large number of them were left in Afghanistan by the Soviets when they left in 1989. However the Russians have supplied the entire middle east with AK47's, and rpg's. The united states often intercept ships that fly no flags that were ported in Iran, just recently one was seized, upon removing the flooring they found a large cache of about 10,000 AK47's, as well as rockets, and grenade launchers. The U.S. allowed the people to leave on life boats, (knowing most were doing it to earn some money for their families to have food), THE u.s. then sink the shipS and cargo. Mogadishu, Somalia (borders the Indian ocean, thus the Somalia Pirates) the nation is in a power vaccum, it's not entirely it's government at fault, but paramilitary elements funded by Iran. It's ideological landscape is riddled with various factions fighting multiple fronts of civil wars. One of the largest risings of paramilitary organized crime is from it's youth population fighting against rival gangs. It hasn't helped that Somalia has experienced droughts in 2015, continuing into 2024. affecting 36.1 million people. It's a location in which has become nearly impossible to have any sort of organization, or governmental remedy. As soon humanitarian aid is attempted to be brought in, the various factions attack, and or kill off it's non violent parts of society, and battle one another to gain stocks of aid, as recent as April, 2024. This has lead to a backing off of any aid, because of the dangers in having no real centralized governmental control. Iran has achieved it's goal, and if it had it's way it will soon start to attempt to spread it's influence across Africa. Their objective is not to claim ownership, but to cause chaos, no central organized government, will result in the ability of Iran to have free roam across the middle east, and Africa. As no one would be able to negotiate any sort of agreement with nations attempting to qualm the fighting, and starvation of the peoples. There are about 6,000 Muslim U.S. soldiers. In WWII some 5.5 million Muslims served in the war on behalf of the Allied forces, fighting against the Axis. Some 1.5 Million Muslims were killed in WWII.
