After Del's sabotaged execution, the Warden comes down to berate them for the mess. While ranting about the problem, he mentions how the witnesses could hear Wild Bill singing about it. Paul asks him 'Can he carry a tune?' 'Carry a tune' is an old metaphor in the English language for someone being able to sing well. Paul asking the Warden this is a way of defusing his anger at the situation. This line is audacious and funny in this context... it shocks the Warden back into handling business rather than being angry. Fantastic Movie One of the greatest ever made.

I'm 25 years familiar with the book and the movie. It took a long time to get beyond the devastating emotional impact well enough to observe a few things that are easy to miss. John is always obeyed. He's just so soft spoken and patient you don't even realize he's actually commanding the people around him. In the book Paul knows that Del is right and he shouldn't be getting too close to any cell, especially if no one is there to back him up. But the thought is far off and then drifts away. Later, he just blames it on the high fever he was running. When John makes up his mind to do something, no matter how much they may complain, no one makes a serious move to stop him. If he had wished to change the outcome of his trial, and just walked away from the whole situation, he could have done it. He would leave a lot of confused people behind who might not even remember John at all. Maybe that's happened before. It would explain why he has no back trail. 🧓🎭📽️💖

Not sure if you guys noticed but the one younger officer played the sniper in Saving Private Ryan with Tom Hanks. The person he went to see who had the little boy that got attacked by a dog - that was LT Dan from Forrest Gump. The man who played John Coffey was Michael Duncan Clark. Unfortunately, Michael is no longer with us. He died in 2012. For some more awesome movies, I suggest that you guys watch the following - they should keep you busy for a while: ~~Armageddon - Starring Bruce Willis, Michael Duncan Clark,. Liv Tyler, Ben Affleck, Owen Wilson, and Steve Buscemi. Awesome movie! ~~A League of their Own - Starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and Rosie O'Donnell. ~~Don't Mess with the Zohan ~~Sicario ~~Three Kings ~~Zoolander ~~Who Framed Roger Rabbit? ~~The Austin Powers trio of movies ~~Braveheart ~~The Beverly Hills Cop movies ~~The Fifth Element ~~Ace Ventura 1 & 2 ~~The Indiana Jones movie series ~~Office Space ~~Tommy Boy ~~Twister ~~Red Dawn (the original) ~~National Lampoon's Vacation movie series ~~Footloose (the original) ~~Glory (1989) ~~Coming to America ~~Sixteen Candles ~~Pretty in Pink ~~Trading Places ~~Uncle Buck ~~Tombstone ~~Fast Times at Ridgemont High ~~Ferris Bueller's Day Off ~~Grease ~~The wedding Singer ~~The Breakfast Club ~~Caddyshack ~~The Goonies ~~The Ghost Busters series of movies ~~Titanic (1997) ********And I haven't seen you guys watch too many scary movies. So here's some suggestions..... ~~The Exorcist ~~The Friday the 13th movie series ~~The Nightmare on Elm Street movie series ~~The Halloween movie series (maybe keep #3 out of it) ~~The Blair Witch ~~The Shining ~~The Sixth Sense ~~Silence of the Lambs ~~The Ring ~~The Grudge

I have said so before. But watching again, I hear the foreshadowings, and get to witness the beauty hidden here. He gave the mouse however long. He gave Paul however long. Sometimes, long life is a punishment. More people below ground than above including pets. It gets old, and one will accept going away. But before we go, we can try to do good, help others, and feel loved. That is the meaning of life. Extend kindness beyond where you normally would. Put it out into the world, into ecosystems, out onto all animals (don't eat them). The ripples of love will come back to you, I promise. Jesus promised that, too, didn't he? Be well.

I present Percy, the monster in front of the bars. An absolute loser, coward through and through, sociopath, psychopath, animal torturer, someone who delights in the suffering of others and even causes it (execution scene). Then the new job he wanted. Imagine this monster in humans, who cannot defend themselves and who are hardly believed when they say that they are being mistreated. And little Percy is always there. Yes, and that's what he is, but not in the way he wanted it to be. How long has John been living on his green mile? Decades, centuries or even millennia. how to live when all your friends die over and over again and you have no exit. I can very well understand his desire to leave. And only one person can decide that, you yourself, and nothing about it is reprehensible. The book and film are brilliant. The actors are absolutely top class.

But as a retired police officer from Berlin - Germany, in my 40 years of service, I have had to deal with "monsters". That wasn't fiction. This is gonna seem random but the scene after the rehearsal when they were sweeping the floors it reminded me of my grandfather's house. Houses in the south before air conditioning were built lifted from the ground around 2ft with paving stones or wooden posts and had large gaps in the floorboards to let air from under the house where it's a little cooler and drier to circulate through the house. This also meant sweeping was super easy because there was a half inch gap you could sweep all the dirt into and not have to collect and dump it. Just something interesting I noticed.

(COMMENTERS, please wait for the brothers to respond. Thank you.) Dear Habibi brothers, Marhaba! Let me ask you a question. After seeing who John Coffey was, and the abilities he had, his personality, consider this: Do you think there was a man in history who possessed the very initials that are in John Coffey's name? This is a question for you to contemplate and discuss with each other, but I do hope you will honor my question with an answer. I'm not here to discuss philosophy, ethics, morals, or dogmas, just a simple answer is all. Salaam Ala kem

In 1935 the only places that would have sewage would probly be inside city limits. You may not even have running water out in the country at that time.

Different states have different methods of execution. Firing squads were more of a thing in the western states like Utah. Firing squads consisted of 4 or 5 shooters. One rifle would contain a blank so that if somebody later had remorse theyay think maybe they had the blank cartridge. Sometimes, firing squads were guards and in some states volunteers from the public that were paid a small fee in some states.

Actually, death by electrocution was considered humane compared to other forms such as hanging or firing squad. When done properly (?) the brain is dead before pain is perceived. Nothing alleviates the terror of walking that last “mile” or the waiting period. In my state we have no death penalty which eliminates wrongful convictions. Lethal injection has gone badly- appeals usually take 10 years - victims have no appeals.

    1. Most people cry.😭😭 2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie". 3. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer. (most likely a racial thing. It was 1935 South.) 4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row. 5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (MCD) and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.😢😢 6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse: The Langoliers. Patricia Clarkson played Margarat White in King's remake of Carrie". Needless to say, it was a much different part. 7. Movie magic Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. I know it' just for the movie because of the length of the execution scene. 8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegan and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill. 9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of playing Percy. EVERYONE hates him.🤬🤬🤬🤬 10. John also rescues the other patients at Briar Ridge. 11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clarke Duncan😇. They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography/angles to make John look taller. 12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution, they used a real mouse, and it pooped on Paul's shoulder, and he brushed it off. 13. Now we know what the "left over is fine" dry toast is for. 14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced. the GREATEST MOVIE EVER. (GOAT)🤩 15. Four words for you: Stephen King. You're WELCOME!

The Green Mile is an allegory for the life of Jesus Christ. An innocent that performed miracles of healing that was executed and martyred.

If you say so. I don't buy that for a second but you can think what you want. Neither John Coffey nor Jesus Christ were martyrs, as neither one died for their beliefs. According to the the Christian faith, Jesus was a sacrifice, substitutionary atonement to pay for the sins of the world. He wasn't killed for his beliefs, he was killed to create the very beliefs some have been martyred over. And John was wrongfully convicted and executed as a result. His beliefs had no part in any of it. I don't think you know what a martyr is if you think either are one. And you have no cause to say that John Coffey was an innocent either. Yeah he was a nice guy who did good things for people and seemed to be harmless in every way😊 but that in no way makes him an innocent or perfect or sinless. According to the Bible's writings, the purpose of jesus's life was to live without sin in order to become a perfect sacrifice to atone for the sins of the world. Which is absolute nonsense of course but hey people have believed crazier things.

@@imvandenhJesus was certainly arrested for his beliefs and the influence he was having on the populace. So yes, he was executed for his beliefs and deeds. But I agree, the green mile is a work of fiction and I can’t see any parallels to the life of Jesus.

The movie is set in the late 1990's. The story about the prison is set in the early 1920's. That makes him about 120 years old. The "Cassie sitting in her rocking chair" that John Coffey sees when he looks up at the night sky is a constellation,
