Alex Rudinger - Between The Buried And Me - "Obfuscation"

Музыка

I recently transcribed 'The Great Misdirect' Drum Transcription Book for Blake Richardson (if you've attended a #BTBAM show recently, you may have seen it at their merch table!). I always love transcribing Blake's parts - they're so well thought out & well executed. With every book I've done for him (this is the 3rd!), I end up with so many new ideas & perspectives - just from picking apart his playing (& of course, I also end up stealing a lick or two. Lol!). What can I say - Blake's just a SICK fuggin' guy, & a SUPER sick drummer (furreal bro idk if you'll ever read this but you're hella sick dude).
Blake sent me some isolated stems (which always helps when transcribing), & I asked if he'd be ok with me using some of em' for another cover. Always loved this song (I vividly remember watching his OG KZread vid for it - 10 years ago now!), so it was fitting to cover this one. So HERE ya go - "Obfuscation", by BTBAM.
Let me also say for the record: I definitely DID NOT do this in one take. LOL. Honestly ya'll, this song was hard as hell. I tried to do it without punching in, but god dang... trying to nail a 9+ minute song with crazy parts, without messing up at all, is TOUGH! That said - ya'll know by now that I'm not all about that miming stuff. Whenever I do a punch, I switch the camera take(s) / files to match (I.e., whatever you're seeing is always the actual take you're hearing, too. I'm kind of a purest about that crap). So despite the fact that it looks like I nailed this song in one take, I wanted to make it abundantly clear that I did not. There're already enough things on the internet that set unrealistic expectations (Lol). Not trying to add to that. PLUS, it would detract from the fact that Blake somehow manages to play this song (& many others that're equally crazy) ALL SICK, night after night. I mean god dang. Ya'll, let me tell you. The more I've worked on / learned Blake's parts, the more I truly believe he is the GOAT!
Mix for this video was done by Declan White! Declan's been doing quite a bit of mixing for my videos as of late, so you'll definitely be hearing more from him. I've been fortunate to have a lot of killer engineers mix my stuff over the years, & Declan is no exception. Love this mix - I honestly can't believe what he's able to pull out of the drums that I track here at home. All natural sounds (well, aside from heavy EQ/comp, obviously). Except for the kick, which is a blend of the mics & the sample straight from my 2Box.
If you're looking for a phenomenal engineer, contact Declan via his website (below)! You should also check out the snares he builds - they're INSANE! I'll be receiving the one that I ordered pretty soon ;) !

btbams first 2 albums are superior to anything theyll ever do. their 2nd best album is colors. everything after colors sounds like they want to be dream theater. they had their own original sound and then went full prog\dream theater. boring. funnily their heavier music was more melodic. and when they tried to be melodic they just ended up sounding like a dream theater rip off. selkies, mordecai, ants of the sky, more of myself to kill... all superior songs to any of this over the top boringness. and I'm a guitar player who loves instrumental music.. i love john petrucci.. i love prog.. but btbam doing prog is garbage. well not garbage.. it just boring. voices of trespass was decent and colors 2 has a heavier feel to it, and definitely brings back some of the heavier riffing style that made them. i hope they abandon prog one day and just go back what put them on the map. but... its a money thing, i understand. theyre trying to make money while not completely selling out and dumbing down their music. so instead of going pop.. they went prog. so lame

Then all of a sudden i said :"you know what? i'm gonna learn it anyway, whatever it takes! " . It was long time ago but i think it took me like 2 weeks to learn it by ear and remembering all of that stuff, then i took my shitty electronic drums (which was all i had at that time) and my shitty camera and recorded all the song in one take (not the first, obv XD) and put the video here on youtube. (link at the end of the comment if you're interested in what came out, i need to clarify that i'm not linking it in order to get views, i do not absolutely care about that.) This reminds me of that time, so many memories, all the commitment and the struggle to achieve something that you don't know nothing about but you WANT to, and no matter what it takes, you will arrive at the end of that...maybe :D. One of the most inspired moments of my study. lol. You unblocked me a memory, so, thanks a lot!! :D OH, and btw, EPIC PLAYING as always, killer sound and motion. I've often come back to your playthroughs over the years you've been on KZread. It usually happens when I find myself listening to your own body of work, or any drummer you've covered, and end up thinking how the actual f#$& does he do that?!? It's very refreshing to see an elite drummer like yourself showing humility and being transparent and admitting a track was too difficult to do in one take. It fosters a greater appreciation of you as a person and drummer, and for the artist that you're humble enough to admit is a notch above. I'd love to see you cover more of Blake's work some day, especially Lunar Wilderness. I think a lot of folks that dive deep into BTBAM and focus on listening to Blake's drumming agree with your thoughts that he's one of the best in the world today, period. Regardless of genres.

I seen them in a small venue. I could literally grab three feet. And one dude was like yeah warm those hand up Blake while he is doing hand exercises before playing. Mind blowing I'm just waiting for Blake to mess up. He doesn't. Solid as concrete

Not fair how awesome Alex is. One of the best drummers out there. Just so consistent and precise. Some of the best sounding drums as well. Damnit. So fucking good.

Coming back to comment a second time. After watching again and knowing the context of the video, It's crazy that Blake does this every time but 10 times the amount with how complicated and long their songs are. Love it.
