#JaredDines Play-Through number 3 (of 5)! "SPEED RUN" from Jared's new album, 'The Grey'. The album is now officially out & available for streaming & purchase on all platforms (links below!):

I think "Speed Run" is actually the song I changed the most drum-wise (well, relative to Aaron Smith's original programming ideas). I kind of deviated significantly from his programming at times, but he actually loved it so much that we decided to do things like this in the future (when / if we ever write some more stuff together. Which I'd imagine we will... sooner or later!).
Bit of information on this album - I didn't drum on the WHOLE thing, only 5 songs - the 5 that were written (or co-written, I think?) by Aaron Smith. Aaron is a great audio engineer & guitarist - you may recognize his name from other video descriptions, as he's mixed some stuff for me here & there over the years. He also used to have a band called 7Horns7Eyes (still technically a band, I guess. But they haven't put out any new music in a hot minute). At ANY rate, *someday*, whenever he finally gets around to doing another 7Horns album, we've talked about my drumming on it (as I've continually expressed interest in doing so over the years, LOL). I love what Aaron writes - it's SUPER heavy, atmospheric, & just all-around SICK!
So ANYWAYZ - Aaron was working on this stuff with Jared, & at some point suggested having me play on the songs he wrote. Jared was into the idea, & BOOM: The rest is history!
The 5 I played on are...
1) Dreams That Will Never Be
2) Insidious Majesty
3) Speed Run (this song!)
4) Piercing The Darkness
5) Blood Letter
& yes, I recorded playthrough's for all 5. So there're 2 more to come! I will note however that the drum videos are NOT the same takes as the album takes - by the time I got home from the last tour I did with Light The Torch, I only had limited time to get the tracking done for these songs. So I opted to not do video for the actual tracking; instead I just learned the songs well enough to punch my way through. THEN, a couple weeks later, after continuing to rehearse them / get them tighter (or, get them to where I could do them in one full take), I re-recorded all of them (Lol), & filmed video for it. Hopefully that all makes sense. Probably doesn't matter to most people, but for any super-nerds out there, I figured I'd mention it!
Some other credits: Obviously, shoutout to Aaron Smith (!), who wrote the songs (as well as the initial drum ideas - he honestly writes SICK drum parts. I just changed things a bit & added embellishments). Aaron also mixed the album version(s) of the songs! Follow Aaron on Insta using the link below!

This guy is such a legend and so quickly. Love the work. The only part I didn't like was the more mellower areas where the constant snare 'pop' was contradictory to the feel of the music. Every time the snare popped I found myself anticipating it and cringing a little. Maybe a warmer more toneful tom would have been a nicer touch. But over all this is a 10.

I believe he has two of the same floor Tom's on each side plus size up on dominant side. Makes for less reaching same as two hi hats one on each side of kick drum.

@@jasonsmarr3621 looks like just one on the right, but anyway it's uncommon to see two floors on the left when the main hihats are also on that side. If I had more room for my already huge and stocked kit at church I might add another tom next to the 16 I have on the left. That or an auxiliary deep snare.....

You never fail to impress. Your mic placement on the rack toms seems a bit odd, but I imagine they'd be in your way if you angled them towards the drums better. Your snare tone is selling me on a UV2 for my new Yamaha snare, hope the mix isn't all samples! The whole kit of course came with single ply remos but I'm an Evans guy like yourself. Keep em coming!
