Akumal Snorkeling

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

While on vacation in Akumal, Mexico I recorded a couple of hours of video on my GoPro camera while snorkeling. This video is the best 9 minutes whittled out of that. I mounted the camera on a 2 m monopod, so could get the camera quite close to the turtles and fish without annoying them too much. Most of the critters in Akumal Bay are quite used to people snorkeling anyway, as this is a very popular tourist destination, particularly famed for the ever present sea turtles.

I'll be in Akumal in a few months . I've never been but hear the snorkeling is amazing. Your video is amazing thank you for posting it. You said that you were 200 meters from shore ...the water doesn't look to deep in any of your video...were you able to walk out the 200 meters or did you have to go out by boat? Where exactly were you in Akumal? Across fro the dive shop or Lol Ha, The wellness shop? Any info you can provide I appreciate it. I have I just bought a GoPro for this trip . I hope to capture similar beautiful images and post them as well.Thank you.

+georgiaavenue Akumal Bay has a barrier reef offshore about 300-400 m from the beach. The water can be anywhere from 1 to about 3 m deep within the zone from the barrier reef to the beach. There was great stuff to see everywhere in that zone. We saw turtles and stingrays as close as 10 m from the beach. I found some of the best reef about 200 m straight out from the Akumal Bay Beach Resort buffet building. We stayed there and just snorkeled out from the beach. Good luck.

Did you happen to snorkel half moon bay or any other nearby areas, or just Akumal Bay? Great video, thanks for sharing. We're making a return trip with our kids this summer and looking forward to it.

No, we only snorkeled in Akumal Bay itself. Folks said the snorkeling was great at Yal-ku Lagoon, near Half Moon Bay, but it is a pay-per-use site.

The reef is throughout Akumal Bay. Some of the best snorkeling is away from the tourist area at the north end of the bay.

Right out in front of Akumal Bay Beach Resort and around the bay in general. Straight out from the buffet building had the best viewing and the fewest other snorkelers. Good Luck.

Ok I have quite a few questions. What time of year was this? How did you get in to Akumal bay? Did you have to go with a guide? Was this all shot in one day? When I was there they made us go with a guide and we only went to the shallow parts of the reef for a few minutes. How were you able to get out this far? This is really cool footage with great quality.

February. We stayed at Akumal Bay Beach Resort for 2 weeks and snorkeled right off the beach. This is the best of about 2 hours of GoPro video. I was never more than 200 m offshore. SOme of teh best sites were right out front of the resort.

It's a remora, they just hitch rides on any large marine animals. They may eat some of the scraps left by the turtles or some of the parasites on the turtles.
