Akathisia Stories Episode 6, The Downing Family

In this episode of Akathisia Stories, we interview Mathy and Caroline Downing. The Downings discuss the prescription-drug-induced death of their beloved daughter and sister, Candace. In 2003, Candace was prescribed Zoloft for mild anxiety related to school testing. She suffered multiple adverse drug effects to include akathisia and died in January, 2004. Since Candace's death, the Downings have been active advocates who share their factual experience so that others might be safer.

Doctors are now saying that if you take an antidepressant only and have symptoms like just described; you are bipolar and are put on meds for that. I believe it's akathesia, not bipolar disorder. Also the physical pain experienced is also said to be all in the head of the patient. Stop the patient blaming. RIP Candace

Sunny Romano.......thank you for sharing these important facts!!!!!!!!!! Yes, antidepressants and stopping them definitely causes physical pain, and it can occur in your ankles when you walk (feeling like a knife is digging into the bones,), stiff, swollen & painful joints like arthritis, and antipsychotics are horrible too, as well as mood blunters (un "stabilizers") !!!!!!! Personally, I have felt too many times to count, that psychiatrists and some m.d.'s, as well as the entire mental "health" community just want people dead, or drugged up to shut us up, and blame literally all the horrific side effects on us too!!!!!! ,It's a sickening & very cruel & vicious industry!!!!!!!! My heart goes out to and is with little Candace, her sister and parents and all those whose lives & families have been destroyed by this hideous organization called "psychiatry" (psyquackery), and I pray and fight along with all of you to see it banned and things finally changed!!!!!!!!Every time I leave a comment on these channels, for some reason, they are always shortly after deleted by someone so that I can't reply to other's comments!!!! ( Probably by those psychiatric people themselves) Love, power & richest blessings to everyone and fellow survivors & your families!!!,Happy, safe, and blessed new year in 2022!!!!!!!!!💗💙💜❤️💖💗💜💙

Any psychiatrist that mistakes akathisia for mania needs to have their license ripped away. If they are not willfully misdiagnosing, they are an absolute idiot.

I had severe Akithesia from abruptly stopping Kratom. It was touted as a natural way to help with anxiety. I took it in large doses for a good 4 months. Little did I know at the time it connects to the opioid receptors in the brain. My body went into a state of utter terror, panic and despair. My body felt like someone stuck a cattle prod in my back and turned it up to full voltage. I could not stop moving. I paced around the house non-stop. I was exhausted but wired at the same time.. I lost my job and could not function. The doctors prescribed me lexapro, and when I took it it made my symptom's skyrocket. I never thought I would ever come out of this. My whole family were astonished. Eventually it ran its course and I eventually got better. I still shutter at the thought of it...

@@Baghuul OMG Yeah THAT is a BIG no-no! 😵 People, before using ANY kind of benzodiazepine (ie Ativan, Xanax, clonazepam etc., Do your research!! If you take them too often you become dependant extremely quickly and when u come off/ run out, the withdrawal is WORSE than heroin! Ive been through both but just picture being trapped in the worst panic attack times 100. Day and night you are in a state of pure terror!

Psychiatric patients are still being abused. Instead of abuse in mental hospitals, people are getting Akathesia due to antidepressants and neuroleptics. Children especially have side effects from antidepressants. Also, you cannot abruptly stop any antidepressants. I thought that psychiatrists would know this. Even in the 90’s, all of my psychiatrists knew this. I get Akathesia from antiemetics and most neuroleptics. I have severe schizoaffective disorder and can’t be taken off of my medications. I am ending up passing out and getting light headed. So, now I am getting something to raise my blood pressure. My nephew also is prone to Akathesia. He had to be taken off of antidepressants.

I took sertraline for over 10 years at 50-75 mg. I knew from the start going any higher caused unpleasant feelings. In graduate school I had increasing depression and anxiety and a new psychiatrist convinced me to try going up to 150 mg and use a benzo (Klonopin) in order to “tolerate” the side effect. Big mistake. My body must metabolize Klonopin oddly, but the effect was so chaotic and unstable. After 6 months I got breakthrough akathisia attacks between doses of Klonopin. The way benzos mask the akathisia from an SSRI, while at the same time causing the rebound akathisia to be 100 times worse once you develop GABA tolerance is absolutely frightening. At that point the only option was to stop both medications. The horrific roller coaster ride of a failed taper that was honestly closer to cold turkey has damaged me to this day. I still managed to complete my MS degree with an extra year, but had to drop out of the PhD program. I am still suffering some damage now 15 years later. Akathisia is a traumatic experience like PTSD from war. It is that damaging. The worst part is people will never understand. Chemical torture just isn’t even in the realm of imagination to them, so they will always dismiss it. That I am just learning this side effect leads to so many suicides finally gives me a sense of vindication. I will also be on antidepressants for life, though thankfully I tolerate Venlafaxine better than the others. I am pretty much stuck on this drug though as attempts to change throw me into hell.
