Akathisia Stories: Episode 15

Geraldine and Cindy share her late father's akathisia story. After Louis was given drugs marketed as antidepressants and Seroquel for off-label use, his health declined. He began pacing, rocking back and forth, and suffered increased anxiety that was not part of his original presenting symptoms.

Thank you so much for this amazing interview. Im very sorry for your loss. My Akathisia was very severe as well..."Panic attack x 1000." is absolutely correct! It would be great to actually find a real support group, where you could meet up with others and just share conversations.

This is heartbreaking, but at least this man wasn't forcibly drugged. Every single US mental hospital drugs people without their consent. Since many psychiatric drugs cause akathisia, most US mental hospital staff use forced drugging to chemically torture non-criminal detainees

Psych wards are terrifying for this reason. Absurd that the meds they give to “tranquilize” a person can inadvertently torture them. It isn’t unreasonable to expect someone in such anguish to react violently and end up locked in a room or tied to a bed - a situation that only intensifies the fear and agony. This result is especially likely if you are a large male. It isn’t easy to communicate the level of desperation and agony you are experiencing without making others afraid.

I’m going to die from this no one seems to care of my family to even educate themselves on what it is they just made me homeless rid of me. The only thing that was keeping me alive as my family and my kids I’m sorry if I got everything and felt like I wanted to scream and I said I could not help it

How are you now? What caused your akasthia?

Why do you end with “someone recently shared he shouldn’t of lived at home and should of been somewhere under professional care?” Where? Who? That’s dangerous to say because support systems will think some place like that exists? I can’t find a neurologist that’s worth his salt. Psychiatrist don’t want to hear their medications are causing this because they can’t help, and if they do try, they make you one notch worse. I agree, a place like this SHOULD exist, but does not.

Thank u for saying this I doubt you’ll get a reply. My psychiatrist? Well he told me what a shame it was that I was so sick and he hoped I didn’t kill myself cuz I was such a sweet girl. That’s all the help I got. My neurologist wanted to stick me on Levodopa. When I refused because I was afraid it would make me worse, he got mad at me and sent me back to the psychiatrist. The movement specialist he wanted me to see refused me. Most likely because when I read my charts all that is written all over the neuros notes is the word ANXIETY. I don’t see that this group has accomplished anything but telling horror stories which we live everyday. And the other akathisia group lists tons of places to get help if u can travel and pay out of pocket. For people like me on disability there is no help. Just terrible frightening city psych hospitals.

When you are suffering from akasthia you need your family sadly his let him down his wife should of asked the doctors to prescribe him something else not ask a psychiatrist for help the drug is was given was not the answer he should of reinstated the offending drug straight away at a lower dose and tapered off. R I P So sorry your wife divorced you when you were not able to even function what happened to in sickness and in health

My sister had this and recovered but some never do. Even a mental hospital didn't understand and sometimes psychiatrists don't always understand either. A lady talks about it on tictok but I couldn't find her now.

I had Akathisia and spent $1000 dollars on cannabis trying to calm myself. I was on abilify and lurasidone which caused Akathisia. It was a nightmare I wanted to die and couldn't sit still its like tweaking on meth all day and night without reprieve.

The main problem with psychiatry is it seems to still be at the stage of leeches and bloodletting. They typically have no way of even knowing what is going on physically beyond the brain barrier. The only way they have any idea is by highly subjective and grossly inadequately generic questionnaires and observation of behavior. Nobody even knows exactly why the drugs work, when they do work, or why they work for one person and not work (or worse cause neurological damage) for others. Its all such a crap shoot, and when you’re depressed as is, its very hard to feel encouraged.

I don’t think that Geraldine did enough to help her husband why did she divorce him when he needed her the most. How could he be more intuitive he was damaged by the drugs . Did she even take the time to find any support groups for the medication he was taking I bet she didn’t. So sad that his family didn’t support him more
