• Did Samurai Wear Helme...
Samurai were the military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan.
In Japanese, they are usually referred to as bushi or buke.
By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai were usually associated with a clan and their lord, and were trained as officers in military tactics and grand strategy. While the samurai numbered less than 10% of then Japan's population, their teachings can still be found today in both everyday life and in modern Japanese martial arts.
As aristocrats for centuries, samurai developed their own cultures that influenced Japanese culture as a whole. The culture associated with the samurai such as the tea ceremony, monochrome ink painting, rock gardens and poetry were adopted by warrior patrons throughout the centuries 1200-1600. These practices were adapted from the Chinese arts.
In general, samurai, aristocrats, and priests had a very high literacy rate in kanji. Recent studies have shown that literacy in kanji among other groups in society was somewhat higher than previously understood.
Some samurai had buke bunko, or "warrior library", a personal library that held texts on strategy, the science of warfare, and other documents that would have proved useful during the warring era of feudal Japan. One such library held 20,000 volumes. The upper class had Kuge bunko, or "family libraries", that held classics, Buddhist sacred texts, family histories, as well as genealogical records.
A samurai was usually named by combining one kanji from his father or grandfather and one new kanji. Samurai normally used only a small part of their total name.

Maybe they're not wearing helmets because they know they're not gonna help? I mean, if a katana lightsabers its way through a chestplate, I'd imagine it'd go right through a helmet, too, right? They totally missed out there, they should've shown everyone going into battle naked!

I do think *ASIDE FROM THE DRAMATIZATIONS* Age of the Samurai is a decent jumping off point. They never said it was a main battlefield weapon, they said, "it was the finest sword ever made." Which is not only highly subjective, but lacks a lot of context. Frankly, the fact that the Japanese were able to forge something even usable out of tamahagare is nothing short of miraculous. The katana is an excellent weapon, and a very good all-rounder, imo. It can thrust, cuts very well, is highly shock resistant, but is it the "best"? Not really. Its strengths are that it is good at all those things, but there are other swords that are better than it in each individual aspect.

The idea that important people don't wear a helmet is such a video game trope. In many games where a faction has uniformed gear the notable NPCs don't wear helmets so you can easily find them. Ironic, since wealthy Samurai would wear extravagant helmets to show their status, wealth and probably intimidation as well.

  • @ezrafaulk3076

I know right; ironically, it'd probably be fairly accurate to portray them wearing Kawari Kabuto (strange helmets) that had horns on them, as it'd make them look intimidating on the battlefield (especially paired with the mask), AND of course make them easier to identify. There might be SOME kinds of outfits you'd wear without a helmet, but a full suit of armor ISN'T one of them.

Oda Nobunaga is kind of similarly depicted in the anime Drifters. Maybe they used that as a source. That anime also hea Joan of Arc as a pyrmoaniac seriel killer and Jesus skinning alive dragons to make weapons to his hog army from its bronze skils. So it is absolutely historically accurate.

Speaking of coins. Do you know anything about historical Japanese coinage and currency? I think it could be a very interesting topic for a video. What they backed currency with, what sort of trading took place in what goods and services and so on.

They used gold/silver/copper coins, and they weren't really "backed" with anything they had value because they where made of precious metals, just like most pre-modern currency. The government did fix the exchange rate but that was also pretty standard pre-mass long distance communication.

Thank you and the Shogunate so much for your amazing videos. When I first watch this series, my mind was blown at how un historically inaccurate they were with this period. Although I have study their period for sometime now, the first moments of the first episode had me questioning some what they showed and your videos had helped confirmed that most of the things they showed was wrong. Its very demoralizing that this is supposed to be a documentary series and they get even the basics wrong and it makes me worried for other documentaries. Still, thank you so much for the amazing videos.

When I first saw the trailer I admit, I was kinda hyped, like everyone else. But after the first episode...I was laughing and crying, because all of the mistakes they made and the way they showed us Nobunaga and all of that anime-like thingies. My favourite ,,what the hell?" moment when the commander named Sakuma literally charged into the Toyotomi forces in the battle of Shizugatake alone, without a helmet, waving his sword in the air, in short, he done it in the most stupidest way he could possible do. Also, great vid, I always waiting in anticipation for your next vid, especially for the samurai-themed ones.

Another problem i see in the show is that they use the yumi and hankyu as if they are using an english longbow. they shoot the arrows from the left side of the bow. a yumi has its string off-centered to the right to make the shot more straight and is almost never left-handed, even if we say it was a left handed bow, (which should be hold in the right hand) they sometimes shoot the yumi with the mediterranean 3-finger release....

Dear Metatron, In an older video you talk about effective martial arts. You placed Kenjutsu in combination with Kendo at 2nd place after HEMA. I wondered if you took Kenjutsu and combined it with Gekiken? Would that change this where they might be a bit more equal? Since Gekiken is much less limited then Kendo (Which as you mentioned is more akin to modern fencing then anything else.) and incorporates throws and grapples? Thank you :)

About the thrusting the point of your katana into the ground, I remember quite clearly despite the years passed (it was 1986 last time they aired it, at an inhumane time of the day too) that one of the latest episodes (second to last episode, if I recall correctly) of the TV drama Lone Wolf and Cub (in Italian laconically renamed "Samurai") was explained by the off screen narrator voice it was a gesture of momentary truce in a duel or battle. Are my memories defective or my,long time in the past sources incorrect?
