Age Of Samurai: Battle For Japan - Netflix Review Episode 1

Here is a full review of the first episode of Age of Samurai: Battle For Japan, which was recently published on Netflix. Is it historically accurate? Good? Bad? Let's find out.
Link to the shogunate channel / @theshogunate
Samurai were the military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan.
In Japanese, they are usually referred to as bushi or buke.
By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai were usually associated with a clan and their lord, and were trained as officers in military tactics and grand strategy. While the samurai numbered less than 10% of then Japan's population, their teachings can still be found today in both everyday life and in modern Japanese martial arts.
As aristocrats for centuries, samurai developed their own cultures that influenced Japanese culture as a whole. The culture associated with the samurai such as the tea ceremony, monochrome ink painting, rock gardens and poetry were adopted by warrior patrons throughout the centuries 1200-1600. These practices were adapted from the Chinese arts.
In general, samurai, aristocrats, and priests had a very high literacy rate in kanji. Recent studies have shown that literacy in kanji among other groups in society was somewhat higher than previously understood.
Some samurai had buke bunko, or "warrior library", a personal library that held texts on strategy, the science of warfare, and other documents that would have proved useful during the warring era of feudal Japan. One such library held 20,000 volumes. The upper class had Kuge bunko, or "family libraries", that held classics, Buddhist sacred texts, family histories, as well as genealogical records.
A samurai was usually named by combining one kanji from his father or grandfather and one new kanji. Samurai normally used only a small part of their total name.

The katana for the Samurai replacing the spear(Yari) or any other of the multitude of mainstay weapons for the samurai. And The 1911 for the American G.I. If that’s the direct quote from the show, then they’re not wrong. They’re not saying “it is the finest sword,” but “it is regarded as the finest sword.” A lot of misinformed people do believe it’s the greatest sword ever made. However, it seems the show didn’t clarify or correct the misconception, and they also show the katana as the main battlefield weapon, so there’s that...

I remember when Karl Urban played as Judge Dredd and never once took off his helmet. Since only the lower half of his face was visible, I find his performance to be like the predecessor to Pedro Pascal’s performance of covering the entire face. Really goes to show the amount of talent actors can have when they can still convey emotion even without showing their faces.

I feel like the sensationalization of it is making people think iaodo is not a real martial art. It SHOULD be obvious to everyone a sheathed katana against a guy with a polearm is not optimal when you could start with a polearm AND a sheathed katana, but I understand some people have no working knowledge of this kind of stuff outside of movies, shows and video games.

I think the production crew largely didn't know much about Japanese history so much of what the talking-head historians were saying to them (and probably ended up on the editing room floor) went over their heads. They went with what they knew and what they thought their audience knew which isn't much. So a lot of things that could have really pushed the docuseries into interesting territories was missed.

First of all, love your channel, especially your review of Ghost of Tsushima. Secondly, yes, as far as documentaries go, this was a hot mess. I thought it was going to be a story, Romance of the Three Kingdoms sort of thing. I was looking forward to that, having played Samurai Warriors (not their fault, that was my own expectation), but it just seemed cheaply made to be a Netflix series.

I heard once that the “Chiburi” was used to test the integrity of the sword after a fight, as the Bamboo pin(mekugi) that holds the blade may break over time after heavy abuse and the blade can fall.. So after a fight they “give a hit” or a fast short cut in the air to check if the Katana looks ready for another engagement..

Materials were fine it's a repeated myth on the internet that it was bad Japan even had a solid iron ore comparable to the best in Europe, technology was also comparable to the rest of the world, Japanese swords were used against foreign enemies and did well, Japanese blades were actually adopted all over Asia for combat use, it wasn't a specialized cutter but could stab(can have very tips) particularly with the edge held up or hold sideways and deliver blunt force trauma, Europe had their own versions like the Swiss saber, blades were not brittle ones not from later sword making Traditions anyway which is what people are usually familiar with. Sources to check out: Iron and Steel Technology in Japanese Arms & Armors - Part 3: Bladesmithing on Gunbai:Japanese Warfare. the 2 part article: japanese sword " myth busting" also on Gunbai:Japanese Warfare.

And that bit about samurai being the greatest warriors of all time...yeah. I hope you make videos like this for every episode. I also have some questions: those books on your desks, could you do a review on them? (Or have you already done so?) Also, how do you appraoch reasearching historical topics? For example, I am interested in finding out when the Japanese stopped using bronze for their weapons and started using iron. How would I find out where I could even learn about that? Also, when did they start using curved swords? I only know legends about that. Anyway, thanks for all the great content.

My wife, who is Japanese, is a big fan of historical books "fiction" (stories based on/featuring real events/people) and has read a lot about this period, so when I found the series on Netflix and started watching, she was amused. Neither of us is as well-studied on the weapons and armor side as you, but even I noticed some jarring things, and my wife probably simply won't watch it. The style is typical for the current generation of comic-induced productions. One of my daughters remarked that everyone performing seppuku appears to first go to a room with a nice clean set of tatami mats, so they could get a fly-over shot of the quickly growing pool of blood on it. File under "light entertainment" with a note of "gory" and unfortunately a large dose of accurate history in the storylines, so not so easily dismissable.

I'm glad you decided to cover this series, I'm just surprised that it took so long. I hope that you continue to cover the rest of the episodes as I'm sure there's lots to go over. One thing that I thought was a bit odd was the mix of armor. In some scenes I thought that I saw Oda Nobunaga and some other generals wearing what looked to be op-yoroi while most others wore armor from later periods. Is this accurate, would there be a mish match of armor types in the sengoju jidai? Would anybody still be wearing an o-oyoroi at this point in time?

I have watched the series and I must say that expertise of those historians who took part in narrating the series is debatable, at best. Sometimes I think they weren't really sure what they are saying, oftentimes it sounded like someone just gave them a script to read, like it wasn't their real opinion on things. The thing about katana being the best sword in history also kind of set the tone for the rest of this production, as I am aware of at least one blade that is regarded better (Polish hussar saber). I was also expecting more on how the trade-off with Portuguese happened and how on Earth did Japanese came into possession of arquebuses. I think that definitely the series had some specific audience to please and they kinda did. Not meaning to sound rude, but I think it was done in a way that 'eh, Americans are not going to delve too deep into this so why bother?'. Usually documentaries on Netflix are really good, but this one not really. As a show - great thing to watch. As a piece of educational content - not quite.

On the katana “being regarded [by many] as the finest sword,” then the docuseries is not wrong. They’re not saying “it is the finest sword,” but “it is regarded as the finest sword.” A lot of misinformed people do believe it’s the greatest sword ever made, thanks to Western [and Eastern] media. However, it seems the show didn’t clarify or correct the misconception, and they also show the katana as the main battlefield weapon, so there’s that...
