Who was the Strongest Swordsman in Shinsengumi?

Ойын-сауық

If you are a fan of samurai and swordsmanship, I’m very sure you know about the famous Mibu Wolves: 新撰組 Shinsengumi. Shinsengumi is super famous and popular in Japan and there are still fan clubs and new movies and dramas about them coming out. They are a group of swordsmen that fought through a turbulent time of Japanese history.
But haven’t you ever wondered before…
Who was actually the strongest swordsman?
So today, I will first briefly explain about the history of Shinsengumi, then introduce the three strongest members of the squad.
I will be counting down the three swordsmen by how skillful they were, so I hope you can enjoy this video till the end. The strongest man might actually not be the person you had in mind....
However before I start, I need to make it very clear that no one actually knows who was really the strongest, it’s all just speculation for fun. If you know about any other theories or studies, please let me know in the comments.

    As a big fan of both Gintama and Golden Kamuy, it's really fun to learn about the real life people that their counterparts are based on! It's also cool to see how adaptations or homages to them present their characteristics and relationships, such as Gintama's Sougo also seeing Kondo as an older brother as well as being presented as one of the strongest swordsmen in the series.

    Adding to this - and after watching Gintama, it was crazy to learn how many of the shinsengumi killed themselves at such a young age. I'm 28, but a majority of the shinsengumi had already committed suicide by the time they were 23. And watching Gintama again with that knowledge, it makes the anime a whole lot darker.

    One of your earlier Shinsengumi videos is the reason I found your channel at all, and I'm delighted every time I see a new video about them from you! They have such a rich and storied history in the incredibly short lifespan of their organization, even setting aside all of the varied fictional depictions of them in Japanese media, and it always made me sad that there's hardly any information about them available to English speakers who may have an interest in learning more. I first met them in Rurouni Kenshin when I was a child, but only got really passionate after the otome game "Hakuouki". After that, I watched movies, dramas, read books... I love Gintama too by the way but I think my favorite franchise right now about them is Peacemaker Kurogane. I really love the portrayal of the members there. Could you please give us recommendations of more books and other media with them, even if it's japanese only? Or give your references? @@madmanthepope6448 its pretty much a fact i guess. japanese mainstay armies, whether ashigaru or samurai also used polearms mainly ranging from bamboo spears to naginatas so yeah. the sword has always been a sidearm/last resort. just happens that the shinsengumi operated in an age and in situations where they carry swords around rather than cumbersome spears i.e. indoors. same reason why the police of modern day carry pistols around instead of full blown assault rifles and explosives even though wars on foot are fought with the latter rather than sidearms. the shinsengumi was essentially a special department of japanese "police" at the time.

    Fascinating! I try and find as much information about the Shinsengumi as I can. I love that point in Japanese history. The Shinsengumi's dedication in what they believed in was inspirational. It's hard to find information, a least relatively accurate information, about them in English. The one book in english I have made it quite obvious the writer held a resentment for them and it made me a little upset at the language he used about them, often calling them thugs and the like. I have a copy of the book Nagakura-san had written (i believe alongside a reporter), but my Japanese isn't nearly as good yet to properly read it!

Having kids watch those shows is kinda like giving them a history lesson! 😁 Edit: I wanna know more about the Ikedaya incident. Is that the one where Shinsengumi took out the rebels in an inn who were planning on burning the city? If so, according to the anime version, Saito was a part of it. 🤔

    So I believe that when they raided the Ikedaya Inn, the Shinsengumi actually split into two groups, and it's possible that Saito was a part of the group that didn't infiltrate. He was probably a part of the backup group that arrived when the first group with Kondo and Okita finished up. Hijikata was supposedly a part of the backup group too. I believe that the reason for splitting up was because the Shinsengumi wanted to cover more ground because I think they weren't exactly sure which Inn the rebels were at. That is my understanding at least :D (Huge Shinsengumi nerd)

    The closest I ever saw that resembles the Mumyou Sandanzuki was a pierce-kick-pierce combo, where the in-between kick is timed perfectly to widen the gap between the combatants in order to allow a follow-up second thrust, but that would make it only a "Nidanzuki"? And not only does the timing need to be right but the first thrust has to be shallow/only deep enough to allow the user to still pull the sword out and have enough momentum to thrust a second time while the opponent gets pushed back by the kick. The only way I can think of to complete the third strike is to either have more than two legs or heavy use of performance enhancement drugs. Or maybe you can execute the move once in a thousand tries out of sheer luck, but probably no one will be there to witness it happen. Whatever it was, I guess using the killer move repeatedly in battle put a heavy strain on Okita Souji's already sickly body.

    @certinho76

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@blackjackgabbiani19 Thank you. Yes, but Ninja methods of operation and clan membership not withstanding, it looks like method of the Shinobi. According to work that has come to light in recent years by researcher Antony Cummins and his Historical Ninja Research team, that all Land-lords(Samurai) employed their own ninja and many samurai were in fact ninja or practiced ninja skills themselves, and the fact that the Samurai and the Ninja were not separate as the misleading information that comics and modern media have proliferated. That is the context of my question. Antony Cummins and his team have been gathering as many documents about the 'Ninja'(modern term) or Shinobi(original term) and translating them and analyzing them to see if they are authentic and giving them historical context. So according to Cummins' research is that this Samurai Clan/Ninja Clan binary that we think of is more of a modern media invention and not completely historically accurate and there was more fluidity as I stated above. For example, Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-Ryu is a renowned classical samurai school that has ninjutsu in their curriculum and their not the only one. That was were my question was coming from as an FYI. I'm been a Ninjutsu practitioner in the past. I've been studying everything I could since childhood and now 46 yrs old I've just become more and more interested in the real, authentic historical record; and the perspective that I had as a child and teen watching Sho Kosugi films and reading Ninja magazines has been changed by what the actual historical records we have tell us something different from that Samurai/Ninja clan binary. I think if more people explored Cummins and his teams research that the old(actually modern) binary paradigm will change.

I'm trying to understand his lore and his time better, because I'm simply fascinated with his lore. I'm also a history student and so, I have a general interest in such things. Trying to be the samurai warrior while you are not the class would have gotten you executed by the shogunate10 years before they Shinsengumi where formed.
