In Gintama, my favorite manga, there is a group called Shinsengumi that appears as quite an important role in the story.
This association is a group of samurai that actually existed in the history of Japan, during the turbulent time of westernization in the 19th century.
Of course, the comedy parts of Kondo being a stalker and always naked, Hijikata being a cigarette and mayonnaise addict, and Okita being extremely sadistic are not real.
But there are some parts the Gintama Shinsengumi and the real Shinsengumi surprisingly have in common.
So today, as a big fan of this group, I will explain about the accurate and inaccurate points
of Gintama Shinsengumi.
This video will be perfect for you to enjoy both the real history of Japan and the manga Gintama more.

Don't want to be rude, but Shogo-san has misspelled and misread Okita's name, it's Souji not Soushi. You've made the same mistake in one of your old video and corrected it then Anyways thank for a great video!

I think there are two possible readings but because of Okita himself mispelled his own name we know how to read it. The characters in his name can be read as both "Soushi" and "Souji" but in one letter he signed using the character that can mean 2 if I remember correctly and in names this is always read as "ji" so if he made this mistake and wrote this character we can assume his name was read as "Souji" (very creative as he was born as Soujiro and changed name when he grew up). So, Shogi-sama, don't worry about mistaking his name... he did it too XD

@@Meanness_Scar It could not be mistake actually, people in Edo era didn't give much attention to kanjis as long as the reading is the same. Especially for names. So I'm not sure if he actually did a mistake here. But yeah the point is that the correct reading is Souji anyways

This is just speculation: Perhaps Yananami Keisuke is not in the story because it doesn't work with the group dynamic in the anime. As far as I understand, he is the 3rd most important person after Hijikata and Kondo. Okita always aspires to become vice captain instead of Hijikata in the anime (not a huge spoiler if you haven't seen the series, clear almost from the very beginning). So a 3rd person in between doesn't really work.

I learned about Shinsengumi from Hakuoki. Which seems to be fairly historically accurate given it's a romance with fantasy elements! The names are correct, except they use a different reading of Yamanami (he's Sanan in the game), not sure why they did just the one.

  • @fm0363

Another speculation: I have a feeling that Yamanami Keisuke was also combined as one of the core character of Itou Kamotarou's characterization. I did some research and find out that both Serizawa Kamo and Ito Kashitarou died a very dishonarable way: both of them got assassinated by the Shinsengumi which obviously does not go well with... Itou's death in Gintama, while in Yamanami's wikipedia page I found this: >but when forced to choose between his friends and Justice, he decided to commit an honorable suicide and escape scandal. Sounds familiar? That's the ending climax of Shinsengumi Crisis arc, with Hijikata proposing an already dying Itou to fight against him in a duel to death; to help him not being branded as a traitor, to die a samurai way befitting a Shinsengumi member (Gintoki said this himself before the duel). Kondo trusting him so much almost to a fault also goes well with his relationship in the history. Okita wasn't a friend with him in Gintama but he did form an alliance with him for a short period before Itou shows his true color and was planning to assassinate his brother figure. Resulting in Okita snapping. The whole Shinsengumi Crisis was him having a beef with Hijikata 18:45 Yamanami historically as Shogo-sensei said was the third man of Shinsengumi. That's the same position Itou assumed before he rose to become the second-in-command after Hijikata got kicked. Also I'm not entirely sure how the image was built around it but when searching for Yamanami Keisuke images online 99% fictional anime/manga characters of him wears a pair of glasses. I'm not sure if it adds anything but perhaps there's a solid reason on why they give him the glasses trademark and perhaps Sorachi-sensei was also influenced by it when designing the character.

Edit: fun fact: before watching Gintama, I was just interested to know what is Shinsengumi so I watched that clip you have about them, that's when I learned about them. Then you mentioned Gintama (that time idk about its plot yet). Days after that, I started watching Gintama because I watched one day with my younger sis and I totally got hooked because of its genre (esp. that straight & funny guy comedy & always breaking the 4th wall) and how its plot is somehow based from the history. It's like learning history in a funny way, but I just have to know which ones were real and a parody 😂

I love Gintama so much and it's just so awesome seeing an analysis of comparisons with their real life historical counterparts 😁. I got inspired looking into the history of the Shinsengumi due to the fact that I noticed several anime I watched had them in those stories or mentioned them. It's always a pleasure for me to see how interesting historical figures are interpreted in a piece of media all the while having the knowledge of them as they were in real life. Gintama, by far, captured my heart with it's interpretation of the Shinsengumi compared to others such as Peacemaker Kurogane and Hakuouki behind as close second/third.

omg thank youuu very much for this content. Gintama is also my moooost favorite anime of all time, its tha gateway that made me interested in all kinds of bakumatsu related, specifically shinsengumi and jouishishi ofc. regarding the 3 strongest in shinsengumi, were they Okita, Saito and Nagakura or Hijikata? also this is just my speculation, but maybe sorachi sensei didn't include yamanami keisue because it will add another fragile side of Okita. Gintama Okita is portrayed as a do-s, his fragile side already exposed in Mitsuba arc (which is because Sorachi wouldn't want to kill off Okita, hence Mitsuba got the tragic fate). Knowing that Okita and Yamanami were very close, and his responsibility on Yamanami's seppuku, Okita must be the one who took it the hardest.

Gintama is one of my favorites too. something Gintama gets more correctly than many other anime for the Shinsengumi is Shinsengumi leaders often wears western style clothing(as evident bt various photo) and carries firearms rather than always wearing the aqua blue Haori and Hakama uniform that every other anime/games makes them wear.

After all i watch Gintama, i realize guest Sorachi is an literature person... The way it's root from history except Gintoki,, and the way the series playn with pun word or the changing kanji character and still make sense were enjoyable Aren't it?

I obviously liked gintama shinsengumi, but it was rurouni kenshin from which, I first got interested in the shinsengumi. Hajime Saitou is still one of my favourite shinsengumi members although in gintama, he got way less screetime than kondo, hijikata, okita and yamazaki.

another accurate gintama shinsengumi arc was the one where nasty fungi infestation affected the shinsengumi headquarters in gintama. in another video by shogo-san, he revealed that the shinsengumi military stations where super dirty and unsanitary.

It's explained in the first few episodes of Gintama as a note that the names of the characters are changed due to "trademark infringement" or something else silly. I don't remember what the exact reference was but something similar. At least in the English subtitles. Maybe just as a subtitle thing as a lot of westerners wouldn't be knowledgeable?? I don't know, but it was funny.

Actually the Shinsengumi is not just in Gintama, they're also in Rurouni Kenshin (both movies and manga). Although there's only Saito Hajime that appeared and change his name to Fujita Goro in the story. 15:52 If you know a game called Fate Grand Order, Okita is also appeared there and does have a weak constitution. Sometimes coughing out blood during conversation scene.
