Who was Shinsengumi’s Strongest Swordsman?

Ойын-сауық

When you imagine the strongest swordsman of Shinsengumi, who would it be? Kondo Isami? Okita Soji? Saito Hajime? Of course these men were all strong enough to make others tremble, but the strongest man is considered to be someone else…
It is the captain of the second squad, No, not this Shinpachi. This Shinpachi. Nagakura Shinpachi was a crazy kenjutsu lover and when he was 18 years old, he illegally left his hometown to train and teach at multiple dojo in various places.
These are some of the reasons why he is considered the strongest.
1. He was captain of the 2nd squad and a sword skill master
2. He was involved in almost every major battle that Shinsengumi fought
3. He survived after the disassembly of Shisengumi and died of disease
However we must remember that most of what we know about Shinsengumi today, including who was the strongest swordsman of the squad, is mainly based on what Nagakura Shinpachi told stories of (because he was a survivor after the disassembly of the group). In other words, I think it's important to keep in mind that there must be a little bit of his own subjectivity in it.

The thing with measuring power is that it's completely unnecessary. Even if the strongest man with the highest muscle power fights against a wimp, he could lose in the end. Every fight is a matter of different skills clashing onto each other, so not the one with the most talent or most power wins, buit the one that can outplay the weaknesses of the opponent the best.

This makes me realize that the glasses Shinpachi is actually a wasted potential, since most Gintama characters are also based on their historical counterparts, (Sougo being the most skilled swordsman in Shinsengumi just like real life Okita Souji, Hijikata being Shinsengumi's brain, etc) that means Shinpachi can be stronger than Sougo and Hijikata, and probably equals to that of teenage Katsura (since Sougo is said to be as strong as teenage Katsura and Takasugi), if that pair of glasses wasn't *wasted* (at least he is strong in the movie)

I believe it's Serizawa Kamo would be the strongest if he's disciplined and not a drunkard. Both he and Shinpachi are Shindo-Munen ryu practitioners.
