Affordable Hunting Ammo: Is it good enough?

Ойын-сауық

Are the classic cup and core soft point hunting loads such as Remington Core-Lokt, Winchester Super X Power-Point and Federal Power Shok good enough to hunt deer and other similar size game with? Or do we need the latest bonded or monolithic copper bullets to get the game in the freezer?
Like generations of hunters before me, I’ve successfully used Remington Corelokt, Winchester Power Point Super-X and Federal PowerShok ammunition to successfully harvest game such as whitetail deer and wild hogs and my dad has used it to harvest larger exotic species such as Axis deer.
In this video I share my personal experiences of having hunted with these loads in a variety of calibers over the past 20+ years.
Happy Hunting!

If it's accurate in your rifle, It's all that's ever been needed for deer. PERIOD! Some fishing lures are designed to catch fish, most are designed to catch the fisherman. Same for ammunition these days.

Can’t agree more with your comment. Spend more time behind the rifle with cheap ammo, than shooting a few shots once a year with very expensive ammo. Most likely missing the deer anyway because of lack of practice. Shoot well, most ammo will respond to that.

I purchased more federal 308 blue box on sale years ago than I could use in two lifetimes, regularly $18.99 on sale for $15.99 a box of 20. As a reloader I’m a strong advocate for using the same everything all the time for maximum consistency. At the time I couldn’t load a rd for that cost. Every yr that I check my zero ( Ruger American) I get a MOA group. Finally, I’m left with good brass that’s fire formed to my rifle for reloading,

There were three of us hunting with Corelocks extensively for about 15 years using 270's & '06's. In that period we killed 60+ whitetails and the bullet did its job ever time. Always had exit wounds and these rounds were more than enough for VA whitetails at the ranges we shot (most killed in the 40 to 75 yard range). This ammo/ cartridge combo good to a much greater range we just don't have shots like that. So you are spot on with your assessment for this type of game/range.

I've had great success with 150 grain Core-Lokt ammo in my 30-30. Multiple hogs with one shot kills except for one which required two. That one took the first shot at 250yds snd a stiff wind moved the bullet off course, the second shot at 270yds hit the mark. Like the box says, "deadliest mushroom in the woods!"

Blue box federal is my go to for multiple of my rifles, it has given me excellent accuracy and good ballistic performance. It is competitively priced, and available in the more common hunting calibers in most decent stores. I highly recommend to give it a try, every rifle is different, but I’ve had great luck with it in multiple of mine. I agree you don’t need the expensive match grade for most hunting scenarios, but if high dollar ammo makes you feel better about your firearm you’re using, do it. Having confidence in your equipment is more important than saving a few bucks in my opinion. I’m confident in the Blue Box for my application. Your mileage may vary.

Only time these types of bullets arent very good is if your hunting out past 300 yards, which most people dont. Its easy to get caught up in the latest marketing hype but the average hunter really doesnt need fancy bullets. I do miss the days of Remington corelokts being 17$ a box

Great video. I have done some reloading but generally use cup and core bullets. Most off the shelf ammo is good. It has to be otherwise it would not sell. People still use Remington Core-Lokts, Winchester Power-Points, and Federal Power Shok because they work. I have used all three in .243, .270, .30-30, and .30-06. The exit holes (going through the chest broadside) are generally larger than a quarter for all four mentioned cartridges. I now only own a .30-30 and a .30-06 for hunting purposes. I use whatever is on sale (Remington, Winchester, Federal). I use 170 gr in the .30-30 and the 150 grain in the .30-06. I have only hunted on the East Coast for whitetail, wild boar, and fallow deer.

My cheaper go-to bullet is the Federal Fusion. It’s bonded, soft enough to expand but not too soft that it explodes. The fact that it stays together means little to no blood shot meat. When it hasn’t had full penetration its been in the offside hide. It’s been extremely accurate in all the rifles I’ve seen it in. Bullets I’ve caught have appeared to have great weight retention and expand wide. It’s only a little more expensive than the three you mentioned and I would highly recommend it for deer-sized game.

I have used all of the above with success over the years. My Dad liked his Winchester Super X Power Points. I preferred the Remington Core Locked, in his Model 99, 300 Savage, and my Model 88 Winchester 308. Both guns cleanly killed West coast Blacktail Deer. In those days, we knew the limitations of our guns and rarely took shots over 100 yards. We also, because ammunition was both available and affordable, spent a lot more time at the range than most modern hunters. I think these practices would still make them all effective ammunition choices.

The proof is in the numbers of dead deer and other varmints eliminated by this low cost rounds over 25 years plus of hunting by countless hunters. The more expensive ammunition is written about in magazines and online articles by writers paid by the ammo companies. Additionally, most kill shots are within 100 yards where the less expensive ammunition function well enough.

Never had a failure to speak of aside from one shoulder shot on a pretty large bodied mule deer around 280-300 yards in Idaho. Buck was already hit hard, he put another in just to make sure. Bullet didn’t make it through the shoulder. One year the core lokts just “turned off” in my dads gun. He switched to fusions and has been happy since.

In my short 60+ years of hunting reloading and collecting rifles and coming from 5 generations of hunters I have seen a couple deer taken with just about every bullet made! I believe these the Remington Core Lokt is an excellent bullet, of course if the load is accurate out of your gun. The real reason why many of us started handloading ammunition many years ago was because some loads just didn’t always shoot just the best out of a particular rifle. That said , if it did the bullet always seemed to do a respectable job.

Lmfao, the sale of flashy ammo is no different than idiots buying extremely expensive hunting clothing thinking it will guarantee them success. You know how many elk n moose Iv watched my grandpa drop wearing old ass snot stained red and gold Texaco coveralls while shooting Winchester Silvertips he got from a Folgers coffee can that have been on the floor of his K30 for like 5000 years? Lol alot, I remember him blowing his top when Winchester stopped making the SilverTips so he finally forgave Winchester and settled on the PowerPoint. Loved em, he often said the Federals would blow apart on big game especially shoulder shots on moose to prevent them from getting to the bog water and the Remingtons would mushroom perfectly but slow down to fast while the Powerpoints could always be found on the far hide or have completely exited. Most times we are learning again that Old is still Gold. Great video, lots of good memories .

Based on the lessons learned, I agree that the three brands/types of bullets are more than capable of taking the average whitetail and wild/feral hogs. These specific experiences center around shots from a 30-30, .308 Win., and 30-06. I will say that the only exception to this is using my 300 win mag with a 150 gr Core-Lokt/Hornady style bullet. These rounds were hand loads with an average muzzle velocity of 3300 fps. I shot two 175-pound sows broadside/high shoulder at roughly 50 to 75 yards. After shooting them, they both disappeared into the swamp. Upon looking for blood, I couldn't find but just a few drops. Eventually, I was able to find them. On both of them, I hit where I had aimed. On both, I had an entrance wound but no exit. After cleaning them, both wounds were noticeably shallow (4-5 inches in depth). The bullets hit and seemed to have "exploded" after entering the animal. To be honest with you, I had never seen anything like this before in any other caliber. At that point, I began to do some research and found out that a "standard engineered" Core-Lokt style bullet is not really designed to handle much more than 3150 fps at the muzzle. Going upon this info I reloaded a "stiffer" bullet (Barnes TSX/I50gr) in my 300 win mag. I choreographed these at 3300 psi at the muzzle with a compressed load using Hodgdon H-1000. After going this route, I have had pretty much complete pass-throughs on all the hogs (175- 300 pd) I have shot. SO, yes the three brands/style of bullet/loads are good for whitetail. I will say that they have worked on wild hogs as well in my 30-30, .308, 30-06. My experience says that this is not the case if you have a rifle with a muzzle velocity of 3200 fps or greater. The "stiffer" copper bullet is better with higher velocity rounds on more dense animals such as large feral hogs.

When I first started hunting in the 70's, I bought mostly Rem and Fed ammunition because it cost less than Win at the time. Rem and Fed was 6 some odd and Win was close to 10. I started having trouble with the Fed ammo splitting case necks in the shoulder area, so I quit buying those, even though they were sold in the neato red plastic belt holder doo dad. Sometime in the early-mid 80's I was introduced to reloading, and haven't bought any centerfire rifle ammo since. I was raised up during the era when all the "experts" declared that you needed a magnum something, and that a proper bullet would rapidly expand and be found just under the hide on the off side. Thankfully after I learned to properly bowhunt, I learned the value of having 2 decent sized drain holes. Like Arnold said, If it bleeds, we can kill it

any one of those bullets will do the same thing. basic flat tail expandable bullets. will expand double their caliber. with no fragments in your meat. the most important thing with those three different bullets is to find out what groups better out of YOUR gun. what groups good out of your buddy's gun might not group good out of yours. these three bullets are the granddaddy of expandable bullets and will drop game like nobody's business. if you have a couple of hunting buddies, go out and buy a box of each and go to the range to see what groups out of your different rifles. as i said, once you and you pals find out what groups good out of your rifle, stick with that ammo. these bullets are like "stairway to heaven" or" take me home country roads" they might not be on the charts anymore but when you play them it still sounds just as sweet as when you first heard them.

I always "gift" myself a new firearm every Christmas. This year was a Weatherby in .270, I bought the Remington Corelokt to sight it in and the Hornady for the kill shots. After sighting in with the Corelokt, I tried to sight in with the Hornady. I will be hunting next year using the Corelokt. No comparison, it was way more accurate in the Weatherby.

My own experience has been with Remington Green Box and the old Federal Red Box in various calibers. All great stuff. Most Winchester Super-X are great, although back in the 1990s, their nickel-plated cases gave me fits in my .270, both the factory loads themselves, which did not cycle well in my BAR and would hang up extraction from my M77 Ruger. I also tried handloads with these cases. The necks would literally crumple in the press, even when trying to seat boattails. Strangest reloading encounter I ever had. I bought these particular cases for their potential durability, but I suppose the plating made them a bit finicky, never bought any more of those. The brass case Winchester loads were never an issue. Come to think of it, that was about the time my go-to factory loads almost exclusively became the Remington Green Box for many years after. Nothing fancy, but they have been 100% reliable, just like those Federal base offerings

From an accuracy standpoint, I can tell you I've shot hundreds of rounds of each (Winchester Power Point being the most accurate) and they all shoot well out of my Savage 99 (.308). At 100yds the Power Point 150gr ammo typically groups 5 shots within 1". That being said, I cannot say the same about the premium offerings. I have yet to find a bonded, tipped, or solid copper round that shoots as accurate. And I have shot a few. I believe it may have something to do with twist rate as my Savage is 12-1 and most newer rifles are 10-1 or 8-1, but that's just speculation. What I do know is that the "old school" flat based, cup & core bullets definitely shoot better out of my Savage. And accuracy is 80% of the game when hunting because a poor shot is sometimes worse than no shot at all.

I love!! The Remington core-lokt But the Winchester not so much. Long story short I had a do standing in front of me and when I went to take the shot it struck the primer but did not fire! Now I know this could have been a one-time thing but I've switch to Hornaday ammo.

I started out with 180 grain core locts in my 30-06 since the early 80’s. I tried every new premium, bonded, bonded tip, all copper, lighter than 180 grainer’s, and partitions on Deer and went back to core locts. I hand load them now. The closest quick shock and drop on the spot is a 180 grain Nosler ballistic tip but it makes a huge mess inside.

My personal favorite is federal power shock, I have killed many deer with it, I’ve had some good luck with Remington core lockt, but I’ve always hated any type of Winchester ammunition, I’ve never had good luck with it in any of my firearms, whether it be a 22, shotgun, high power rifle, or pistol. I also agree with your opinion on using the heavier weight bullets, round nose bullets at shorter ranges are devastating, great to use when you’re not going to be taking long shots.

I or my kids have taken 3 deer and 1 hog with .308 or 30-06 150 grain core-lokt, all dropped instantly or short blood trail, and all with one shot at less than 60 yards (I'm a reformed archery hunter). Plus in my Win Model 70 FWT .308 they are very accurate. The only reason I'd consider changing is if I can't use lead ammo anymore. It's interesting to see what folks have written about Blue Box and Power Point, which I have not used.

180gr Win .30-06 Power Point is the only factory ammo my Father and I ever used for moose and caribou here in Newfoundland. Why did we choose it? Cheapest stuff at Walmart and Canadian Tire when we started hunting big game. No complaints here. Shoots accurate enough for us and is plenty effective on anything we shot with it.

Yes I've tried the higher priced bullets and they do good also but I can't see paying 40-60 dollars a box with the cheaper ones kill just as dead. My shots are usually 100yds or less so cheaper that does a good job is fine with me but I do worry the manufacturers will screw with the cheaper ones to force us to buy the more expensive ammo seeing how most are foreign owners now.

I always liked Remingtons round nose bullets. They always worked very well. I have had great success with Hornadys flex tip bulkets too. Winchesters super x takes 3rd place. The only negative i ever had was with a near point blank shot with Hornady lever ammo, and it blew straight thru a deer and it looked like the bullet did not open up. The deer still died tho.

The Corelokt hold together better but one you did not mention that I prefer that I consider a traditional cup and core and in the same category as those mentioned. The Hornady Interlock. That's just my experience, other may have seen the opposite.

Both my rifles with their perspective rounds I can get 1” or less groups at 100 yds and all deer I’ve shot with both have been 1 shot and 1 kill. Also used federal blue box once for pigs out of my 270 130 gr and it killed the one pig also. Winchester rounds I can’t get sub 3” at 100 yards so I prefer what my rifles like plus my dad has had several duds from Winchester but never from Remington or federal.

For most hunting on deer sized game to 300 pounds, it just doesn't take much to be adequate for the job. And yes, once elk and the like size animals were on the agenda you just jumped your bullet weight up a notch and carried on. The . 270 with 150s and the old . 30-06 with 180s are classic examples of adequate even with pretty low tech bullets. Once you get that sectional density up, and impact velocity comes down, it's pretty hard to run out of bullet before it has either stopped or left the critter somewhere in the rear view mirror.

Actually the 3 brands and types discussed here constitute the largest share of the hunting ammo sold and used on game every year. The "premium" stuff is only a small portion of the real market not the fantasy market. The profit margin on "premium" is huge, so of course the industry pushes it pretty hard. But the industry has long survived on regular ammo volume production and sales, and they know all too well that their standard offerings have to maintain at least adequate performance to keep their reputation fully intact. Ammo success or failure is long remembered by brand name decades later long after the exact details of the load used have passed from memory.
