In a different world from today, 1968, the average 173rd Air Borne rifleman basic load was minimum 20 mags (20 rds loaded with 18) with most carrying 25-30. Additionally, 200 rds for M60, 4 frags, a claymore, possibly a LAW or 81mm mortar rd, 2-3 smoke grenades, always if possible one yellow, then purple or green. Personal choice of knives, usually one folding, and 1-2 fixed (bowie knife, and Gerber or Randal style fighting knife). A 7 day resupply cycle was the norm, extended at times due to weather. No plate carriers, unless it was the base plate for the 81mm. LBE, wss pistol belt, ammo pouches (4mag) canteen covers (2 for canteens, 1 for grenades) and suspenders with bandage pouch attached. Rucksack with metal frame and shelf used to carry poncho, poncho liner, C-rats (13 meals start of 7 day cycle) 2-4 extra canteens. The LAW or morta round and the can of 7.62 linked ammo. Personal items tooth brush, razor, writing paper & envelopes, letters received, foot powder and extra socks. One man per team carried a D-handle shovel, switched each day, and one a machete.

@@unclefreedom213 Cautionary about the source of what I am about to say. According to a Trench Grenade survey asking about how many people are in your group that you train with in the last six months, most people are solo, have one buddy or 2-3 is on the high end. I figured three mags on the chest was about comfort on spacing on the chest, too many mags go under the arms and can rub. My personal is one 20 round in the gun and a 30 on the belt, most the time I have this load I am walking own property to see what is going on with wildlife. I am expecting maybe seeing a neighbor on their property or one of the species of predators I have in the area. For a heavier load out I figured, three on chest, one 20 in gun and two on belt with spare ammo not in mags in the pack to top mags off. I can't imagine a situation where I would have to burn through all 6 mags and not have a chance to top some up.

I will absolutely promise you if you get into contact like for real contact you can burn 4 or 5 mags and not even be away from contact yet. The military uses belt feds for this role, we don't have that. In oir world that minutman life our focus would be to burn some ammo and break contact to draw then to a place where we can engage and eliminate threats from a superior position. The Minutemen role is far more tactics based on unconventional or asymmetrical warfare than conventional

I know you’re probably looking for Uncle Freedom’s response but I would agree. More rifle than pistol. If anything, two rifle and one pistol reload, but I’ve switched from a battle belt setup to LBE for more rifle ammo and sustainment. I still have a battle belt, two rifle, one pistol, one dump, one blowout kit and a knife, but I just don’t see that as being enough for your typical civilian 2-4 man team doing just about anything. We don’t generally have resupply like a modern military. Hell, we don’t generally have uncompromised comms to even coordinate such things if we had the man power to run logistics like that, unless you’re loaded or you’ve spent ALOT of time, with money here and there, to create an AO with caches, a mesh network with encryption and plenty of nodes, etc. I digress. There are few kinetic situations I can see a civilian in, where they carry both pistol and rifle, that you would actually need more pistol ammo. Better to keep your primary up and running. Hell if all you have is a battle belt, sub one of those pistol pouches for a GP with a backup BCG and small cleaning/malfunction clearing kit. Itd be a better use of the weight than more pistol ammo. Reserve the extra pistol pouches/mags for a low vis setup, where carrying a rifle just isn’t feasible, but contact in close range is still a possibility. My two cents. YMMV

my BOB has 48 rds of 60 gr 223 Nosler Partition softpoints and 48 rds of Aquila 60 gr 22lr subsonic ammo. I wear 14 rds of my handmade 9x21mm loads, but the pistol will fire normal 9mm ammo if need-be. I have more ammo scatter-buried at the BOB, just like the food. I have a silenced shorty AR and 22lr conversion unit, armor, night sights, night vision armor, solar charger, batteries and brains enough to not be outside of my tunnel more than 1 hour per night, at least for the first year of shtf and probably 2 years. The 99% can die off without my "help" (or my risk)

In that I [ and virtually everyone I know who has an interest in this ] don't belong to an organization that has a logistics group/ supply chain, I have to carry what I believe I will need should I have to respond to a calamity or event that may require an armed presence or response. That means everything I may require. Ammo, food and water, medical, commo, and some sustainment gear. My general ammo load out is 10 mags for my rifle, 7 on my 1st and 2nd line, 3 in my pack. I have more " stuff " ready to go should I have to hit the road, but that will be loaded on a bicycle.

Becker BK-18 Harpoon, If you like that one, take a look at the BK-16 and BK-19! I recommend both of those as Ive caried abd used the 16 for years. The 19 just recently came out and may overtake my 16 as regular field carry. For EDC, I carry a Becker Necker, BK-11, ita an excellent small fixed blade, esp. with Micarta scales. Speaking of Micarta scales, I really like upgrading to those on most of my Beckers. Becker is my “goto” fixed blade brand. I recommend the Becker sub-forum at Bladeforums, btw. Good luck!

@unclefreedom213 I spent quite a few years hanging out with the special people... saw many loadouts for many different missions. In time though, the more experienced guys began to view missions as infiltration/target/egress. Thus, loadouts usually got larger. Jeff Gurwich served in the same group and has an excellent video on the topic. FWIW I think this is a topic that many people need help with. Keep up the good work. Best of luck, Phil

Is hard for me to understand how can people not see that... this is not Star Wars ...you don't have laser weapons or energy weapons... you need bullets to feed that long stick... and usually the one that carries more wins the fight lol. but everyone needs to look hip and modern and will eat up any new crap they come up with.
