30-06 Federal PowerShok 180gr Ammo Review & Ballistics Gel Test: Best Budget Hunting Ammo?!

In this video we’re going to test the Federal PowerShok 180 grain 30-06 load, shooting into 10% ballistics gel that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
The test rifle is a Tikka T3x Superlite Stainless with a Leupold VX3HD 4.5-14x40 scope.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
This video was filmed on a private range with all applicable safety precautions.

I use blue box in my M77 tang safety .270 and the accuracy I get from it is phenomenal , roughly 1/4 inch. Used it in 30.06 as well for good results roughly 1in. Really is great hunting ammo. Was able to make a perfect neck shot on a deer at 150 yrds with the .270. Not exactly a shot I prefer but it was the evening of the last day I could hunt and the only legal buck I saw all year, and he was walking directly away. Gotta take what you get sometimes. Really like this series so far, not something most people can do for themselves in most situations, really appreciate it.

This is my go-to northern Michigan round. Simple and cheap but gets it done.

ALRIGHT FELLOW MICHIGANDER, Good Choice.
I appreciate your test protocol. You put in the effort to make your tests truly comparable. Many ballistic tests on youtube have little value in terms of making an honest comparison from bullet to bullet or round to round. Thank you for the good work.
Love the videos and the amazing leather work you do! Keep it up brother 👍🏻
Thank you. Very good results.
Hey Lee , Great video I really enjoy videos like that ! federal blue Box and Remington core lock is all I ever shoot 30-30, 243, 308, 30-06 you can't beat it, it works every time taken lots of deer with them !!
I still have some that were $9/box in the red&white box. Just shot some from a 106 year old sporterized 1917 Eddystone. Grouped about 1.25 inches. I prefer the round nose 180s as their longer bearing surface seems to group even better. They have perforated a few pigs. If I was going log range, might try ELD type bullets, but the 180s are great for inside 200 and would probably put the smackdown on any thing that walks the North American continent.
My Blaser R-93 7mm RM likes 150 gr Federal Blue Box. I live in CT and you need to get a permit to buy ammo. This I refuse to do. So before the law took effect I bought 3 cases of it. I got enough ammo for my deer hunting for the rest of my life. I think Federal loads this ammo with Speer SP's little soft but excellent deer-sized game bullet. I just check Zero and go hunt last hear I fired two shots on paper 2 inches high at 100 you can cover with a nickel, and two more shots for the two deer I took. At this rate, I have not touched the 3 cases yet. I had four boxes that I bought while in CA back in '05 so what I have will last 150 years- I am 68 so I am set. With luck, this law will be overturned when it gets to the Federal Court. Since I am retired now, I just may move. Federal Blue Box is really good ammo. Not a surprise with the 06.
Another great video..
Thanks for good vid, good info.

How long is your barrel? I looked up the tikka tx3 lightweight stainless .30-06 and on Cabela's it lists the barrel as 22.4". Usually .30-06 factory velocity is for a 24" barrel. For .30-06 you can usually figure on a loss of ~25fps per inch for shorter barrels. These might actually be even closer to the box value than you posted. My primary big game rifle is a .30-06 so I am always looking for ammo data. Thanks for the video.
Those flatter lead tip bullets are the best.
I would really like to see velocity and penetration comparison tests with 30-06 and 300 win mag and the 30-06 and 7mm rem mag. Back when the 7mm Rem mag was first introduced, the velocities of the Remington factory loads were significantly over stated.
My Remington bolt action rifle in 308 loves federal ammo I get the best results out of federal fusion 150 s
Are the current Federal Power-Shok and Speer Hot Cor the same bullet?
Great video! (As usual). Was the advertised velocity for 100yds? If not, this ammo likely exceeded the claim.

No, and the chronograph isn’t at 100 yards either
Good video, good shooting. You used a Tikka? You wanna borrow a model 70 for next time?

@@masonleather i was joking no hard feelings
Do you have any power shock in 243 win to test? If not I’d be willing to buy a box. I’d just like to see how it holds up because it’s what my gun is sighted in with.

Yes, coming as soon as I get to it
Hey Mason, budget ammo? Im 72, i have boxes of '06 marked $3.50.
Those are the Federal Hot Core by Speer they also load a Grand Slam which will match the Rem Corelokt PSP for performance. It has a blunter nose but more tapper at base than Corelokt but ballistic ally are equal and same 74% and 27 inches of elk getting gusto not 20 inches of deer shok but a true elk load.

You have to look at tip and or open box before you buy to see which Federal you have if it looks like a Corelokt psp you got the Grandslam.

180 grain .30-06 is a pretty classic combo across the brands with a conventional cup and core bullet. They run fast enough to get there and slow enough to hang in there. Just a good working load for average conditions and ranges.
What is the barrel length of that rifle ? Excellent review.
