My step dad has hunted every year in Wyoming and his rifle of choice has always been a 30-06 with a 165 bullet. It hasn't failed him yet on deer or elk.

One good thing about PowerPoint ammo is you can use the bullet point as a pencil. I was doing some chrongraph work and my pen crapped out on me, good ol' PowerPoints let me complete my note taking,😊

I've been a deer and elk hunter in Colorado all my life. I have hunted with a 30-06 among other rifles all my life. I handload all my ammunition after once firing the brass. In my 30-06 I feed a lot of 180 grain bullets but my favorite load for elk is a 165 grain bullet. I get a wonderful balance between bullet weight and velocity. Handloads are perhaps 100 fps or so faster. I have never found a 30-06 bullet in an animal I've harvested. Every weight bullet I've used had enough energy to pass through. The 165 grain is accurate for me and my rifle at good ranges. 250 yards is it's bread and butter.

I too made use of 165s in my .30-06 in Huerfano county on mule deer west of LaVeta about 30 years ago. Worked pretty good. Did use 180 grain on one deer. Pretty much the same dead deer results.

@@johnnorman7708 Interesting, I lived in La Veta for 65 years. I own land on La Veta pass where upon I've hunted a lot. It did burn up in the Spring fire of 2018 but is now a jungle of aspen and locust brush. The deer and elk have moved back in pretty thick but are hard to see now.

I use 150 grain winchesters power point 30-06 for moose. It’s great at close range and doesn’t destroy the meat. For Long range I would suggest 300 win mag for long range moose hunting. As it has power and flat trajectory.

Been shooting the PP bullet for deer here in Western Kentucky for 30yrs ,,best cup and core bullet imo,,no need for higher dollar ammo for deer size game !!,,thanks for sharing 👍✌

308 winchester power point 180 grain are good ?

The 165 grain is absolutely fine for elk, moose & all bears. It's my go to bullet weight in the 30 caliber. The 150 will also get the job done, but I find most rifles shoot the 165 better. 🤠

I used the 150 gr,on a deer at 15 yards ,hit it high on the front shoulder , my blind wasc8 ft above it,as it had its head down, dropped in its tracks.

My favorite 3006 load

Just chronograph a factory load that was actually faster than what was listed on the box. Barnes 130gr ttsx. 308win listed @3125fps I got 3128fps 3shot avg from 22"barrel mod 70. Just thought you might want to know. Great vids ! Thanks

I have used these budget rounds in my 6.5x55 swede for many years. I use a shortened pencil sharpener to point the projectiles. Deer slaying round!

A buddy of mine killed a cow elk with a lung shot last fall using 165 Power Points from his 30.06 at a little over 200 yards. He usually uses 165 Partitions in his ‘06 but he wanted to save those since they have become so spendy. Obviously no hair on the Power Point!

For giving you all the good tips on tech sights and your charge master I should convince you to send me that 06 brass ......lol

Back, way before WW 1, when the .30-06 was first introduced, the rifles had barrels as long as 28 inches !!!!!! I never use anything shorter then a 24 inch barrel (if I have a choice!) and all of my own hand-loads are tailored to each "spacific" rifle. About the very best I (and all of our Club Members) can do is 3,000 feet per second for the 150 grain. Then (very close to).about 2,900 for the 165 grain. And "maybe" 2,800 (and these are just a little "warm", definitely at the top of the spectrum) feet per second for the 180 grain bullets. I only shoot a few, less then a box, per year of these "Top of the graph" loads. For just spending a few hours at the Range, training the young folks or letting a "Newby" try out the .30-06 cartridge, I use lighter hand loads or even factory ammunition. THANKS for all your efforts showing just what these great, classic cartridges can do! There are a lot of very fine, little used, "pre-owned" rifles out there. And I like to prowl the dealers in different cities just looking for that one of a kind, "Classic" rifle!

Nice simple review. I'd be curious if the one the penetrated slightly less was also the one that expanded slightly more or was the lower velocity of the 3. Personally I stopped "experimenting years ago, because it's a bottomless rabbit hole. Your Tikka is 22" barrel, I wounder what Winchester used to get their published data. Probably a 24 or 26.

I'd love to see you check your chronograph with a new Garmin chronograph. I just bought one and really like it! Good job

Impossible now, the ProChronoPal sh!t the bed, now I’m using a Garmin Xero C1, it is orders of magnitude more user friendly.

Which is better in you’re opinion the 150 Winchester or 165 for white tails and I know both will do the job but which do you prefer

Mason, the 100fps slower on this ammo out of Ur Tikka was probable due to Winchester using 24" barrel for their fps test. Is Ur Tikka a 22" barrel? If so, that explains the 100fps loss.

Quick question, I hunt standard size deer in New Hampshire. I am torn between the Winchester PowerPoint and the Remington Core Lokt, both in 165 grain. Any thoughts?

The 165 grain .30-06 Core-Lokt tested badly here. A very odd deal since other Core-Lokt did just fine. So go with the Super X Power Point for now.

I used to use super x just to plank, I used to under appreciate them. Ima give all that cheaper hunting ammo a chance

This shot out of a tikka…… their rate of twist in 30-06 shoots slower than other rifle brands. Not the fault of the ammo

Did anyone else see that blood bird land on the block? Reminds me of that goofy Will Farrell movie.

I like them as a "deer" bullet. I have not seen them shoot all that accurately.... but they do expand well and penetrates perfectly for a Whitetail deer. I'd be careful using them for big deer like elk or moose.

A buddy killed a cow elk this past fall using 165 Power Points. It was a broad side shot at a little over 200 yards and the bullet was found in the offside hide. He gets 3/4” to 1” groups at 100 yards. He usually uses 165 partitions, gets 5/8” groups and 2800fps using a max load of IMR 4350. He didn’t use the partitions since they are spendy and wanted to save them for bull elk since they have heavier hides and denser shoulders.

Yea unfortunately almost all Winchester ammo I’ve seen recently looks like it was rolled around the floor of a mechanic’s bay

I luv Power Points. Never had a Power Point stay inside a deer or hog with 30-06, 300WM & 338WM using 150gr, 180gr & 200gr. I've harvested well over 100 deer size game & if they should run off, you will be able to run & follow the blood trail. LoL. I always walk when trailing, but literally I could run & follow the blood. Never lost a deer or hog either with a Power Point. Can not say that with Core-Lokts. I'd loose 1 in 5 deer & hogs b-c it's designed to stay inside the animal & dump all it's energy. With no exit hole & the entry hole tightens up closed, no blood to follow when they run off. That 1 in 5 loss equates to a 20% loss ratio on game & that's just not acceptable or ethical to me. .

This all sounds like a load of bs. Lose 1 in 5 with core lokt huh? Interesting. A core lokt is not designed to "dump" all it's energy and rapidly expand. It's the complete opposite. And out of hundreds of animals from small deer to moose and even a grizzly I have NEVER not had a complete pass through with core lokt. You sound like a young pup making up stories. You got your facts backwards. In this video the PowerPoints only penetrated 19 and 20 inches. Watch his core lokt video. I'm sorry for coming off triggered but when a young putz starts spouting BS as if they know what they are talking about it just sometimes sets me off.

Lets not forget you were using a 22 inch barrel instead of the 24 inch barrel that many 30-06 rifles have

The OVERWHELMING majority of new production rifles chambered in 30-06 have 22” barrels. Nearly every 30-06 package gun sold since at least the early 1980’s had a 22” barrel. 24” barrels for non-magnum calibers haven’t been the norm in decades. A 22” barrel is far more appropriate a testbed than a 24” and the difference wouldn’t be material.

@@masonleather Odd.....I still see lots of production 30-06 rifles with 24 inch barrels including the Remington 700, Winchester Model 70, Zastava M-70, etc. I'm not saying that manufactures don't ever try to fudge their numbers a bit to improve marketing, we all know they know do. But 100FPS is well within the norm for a two inch loss of barrel on the 30-06 and certainly within the variance from one rifle to the next. A rifle chambered with a Foster gauge vs a Clymer gauge....and a rifle with two groove rifling vs say 5 groove rifling can definitely have 100 FPS variance with the very same box of ammunition.

Test them at 200 yds. The velocity should be around 2250 fps. You will be surprized.

165 gr is my kill everything bullet. At least 10 moose planted with them but moose are easily killed. Every 3006 I've run them through liked them as well. If it will go through a moose then bears would be childs play. I don't hunt bears ( I like them) but if I did a 165 gr Win would be in my gun! 😅

Lead is the only way to go. Anyone who says otherwise is not speaking from experience. You don’t need to be tramping around in the bush looking for a wounded animal.

Nothing more than a basic cup in core. Time to go, bonded, or copper.

@@masonleather true. I’ve changed. Range ammo and hunting totally different. I did not care until deer season xp refused to make pass through. But I’m on the east coast in the woods. I’m Barnes copper now.

@@mr.mr.3301 That's exactly why I shoot PowerPoint, Winchester xp expands too fast & penetration suffers. To me a balance of both is where it's at. I've done water jug test with both PowerPoint & XP PowerPoint penetrated better & made a perfect mushroom, while the XP fragmented all to pieces. Sometimes older is better

@@keithreese9636 I’ve considered xp copper. I’d also suggest locked bullets. Hornady American whitetail or old core lockt.

My opinion any cup and core bullet will serve me well in south western pa woods... my way of thinking of is id ya b it it where your supposed to.... ya really don't need more expensive bullets unless you plan on hunting bigger game
