I have NHT superzeros and an energy 10 inch sub running off a receiver for my desktop. Source is Qobuz from a PC through a topping e50 DAC. Very pleased with the sound at all volumes.

Hi Jay! Thanks a lot for the review. Have a question you might give a little help. Currently I have a pair of ELAC unifi UB5 connected to a Denon AVR 4400h. It sounds good, but, do you think that adding an external amp, like a Schiit Vidar will improve substancially the sound. Most of the music I hear are vocals, jazz, acoustic and latin music.

What chair is that? I like the stitching.

What other speakers would you recommend for nearfield listening? I'm thinking of getting maybe Dali Oberon 1, Warfdale Diamond 220. Would those be good for nearfield? For the amp I'm considering Sprout 100 or Rega io.

What about more expensive bookshelf speakers ($1,000 to $2,000 range)? Also, to have the best setup for a Mac it must be paired to an integrated amp with a USB connection so that it's recognized as a sound card. Which one do you recommend? I'm inclined to go with the Hegel H120, but it's a bit expensive.

If I've already had a sub, would you recommend going with the P3 to save desktop space? Would the advantages of the P5 be negated? Thanks in advance!

I'm in a similar scenario.

do you think there's a point in spending $1000+ for a nearfield setup? or do the restrictions (near a wall, fit on a desk) make it so you're paying a lot more for not much improvement because of those limitations?

Although I always enjoy reviews of high priced audio, I'm always left with the thought: "Well, of course, it SHOULD sound good for that price!" I do get a special thrill from finding more budget friendly gear that performs way above its retail price. My near field setup is not a desktop. I have my speakers on stands 3ft from the wall behind and about 6ft apart. I sit about 5 to 6 ft away with the speakers toed in. I find that this helps to remove a lot of room interaction, and locks the centre image in really well, while still giving me a wide soundstage. This also enables me to listen at moderate volume levels and still have good detail in the music.

Hi Jay, Great advice. I hv a pair of NX-E700 and the CD player is faulty(trashed). I am looking for a simple(budget) amp to power these speakers as my PC/desktop speaker. Do you think the SMSL DA-8S NJW1194 amp would work? great, good or soso? Looking forward to you advise. Thanks!!

Will the Triangle BR 02 work as desktop as well, better?

I auditioned through several speakers including the KEF LS50 meta, B&W 607 anniversary versino and the br03... and ended up with these bad boys. They are the real deal for a desktop solution. I paired them up with Vista audio spark II and the topping E30 ! I listen to metal, alternative to techno and house.

Topping D10 DAC would be perfect. Measures very well too.

how would the smsl amp and jds dac.stack up against say a nad 3020?

what about pairing the PSBs with the Powernode? is that overkill?

The audioengine a2+ has a built in dac. it would be interesting to hear your impression on them. Also, new motherboards like gigabyte aorus have built in dacs which is quite interesting.

All motherboards have dacs, but I guess the ones you mentioned may have better ones?

Searching then for a nearfield 2.1 setup. As I like powered monitors, they have their issue - one beying Your stuck with them. As for now I settled for SMSL DA-9 Will try to get the PSB P3 into an audition. Thanks for the vid :)

I have smsl su8 dac to go with that amp if you want. :)

What about active near field speakers.

how does that smsl amp compare to the smsl ad18?

I wouldn't know. Like I said. Theres prob a lot of options out there in this affordable price range. This just happens to be the one that I heard and confirm to sound good

Actually pretty good idea. One thing I forgot to add in the review but one of the best. You may want to play with tow in tho

How about using good PC sound cards (Creative Sound Blaster, ASUS, EVGA, etc) as the versatile daily drivers/pre-amp/audio processor for music? I find it very convenient, reliable and pretty much boosting the quality of online music/video streaming services and able to decently fix crappy digital file format such as lossy MP3 on the fly, IMHO.

I haven't thought about a PCIe sound card for sometime. I randomly saw an EVGA card that was in testing, but haven't looked for any reviews... yet.

You’ve conflated “nearfield” with “close to the room boundary”. If you have space behind the speakers, you shouldn’t discount rear-ported options
