Takes a lot of guts for a percussionist to sing on youtube. Thank you for doing this because not only do you tell us what music you are using, which many reviewers do not do, you also tell us what sound you are listening for, what traits of the sound you expect to hear AND, in case we still don't get it, you even sing us the part. Love it! The audience has been thoroughly serviced. Thank you and thumbs up for another great video.

Great review! I have the little brother, the P3 and I think that your description (both positives and negatives) would mostly apply to the smaller speakers. Of course I am assuming they sound smaller (because they are) but for the price ($219) they are GREAT. I also had a port tube disconnected and I almost sent them back. Then I got lazy, grabbed some small pliers, opened them inside the tube and managed to pull it firmly back into place. Gave the speaker a shake, tube didn't move.

I solved my underpowered amp problem by adding two inexpensive Monoprice 60w powered subwoofers to complement my JPW bookshelfs and Yamaha towers. Sounds bloody awesome now, and a much cheaper solution than buying a better amp here in Mexico, where decent audio equipment costs an arm, a leg and a kidney. I've finally got the clarity, definition and power I've been looking for.

I have a pair of Alpha "Mini"s from the mid '90s that have been relegated to desktop duty (by my wife) and have served me well for many years. While slightly smaller than the P5s, they have a 1/2 " tweeter and 5.25" woofer and sound great! They don't have a removable grill but the back is screwed in place. I've just recently replaced them with a pair of Def Tech ProMonitor 800s which have a 1" tweeter, a 4.5" woofer/midrange and 4.5" passive radiator and take up less than 1/2 the footprint of the Mini. But while the 800s sound more articulate and less veiled, they sound a little thin compared to the Mini (when A/B'd) but are wonderful on their own. The Alpha Mini was $200 for the pair at the time and I will find a way to work them into our living space again!

Randy: spent the better part of the weekend A/B/C-ing the Elac Debut 6, Wharfedale Diamond 11.2, and the Emotiva Airmotiv B1+ (on the Emotiva TA-100). We went with the B1+. I couldn't stop thinking about how crystal clear the B1+'s were compared to the Wharfedale's. Great review Randy as always. Just a comment about your use of the word waveguide. Unless you can be sure that it is designed analytically for directivity, it is better to call it a horn. This is per Dr. Earl Geddes, who started all the confusion back in 1991. By definition, any conduit of variable cross section is a horn. But unless it can be analyzed for directivity, it is not a waveguide per his thinking on the matter.

PSB has been doing this for decades. I wonder if they lifted the bass, and dropped the treble - to go with a number of lower cost receivers that are the opposite? Slight emphasis of the highs, and a lack of punch and warmth on the bottom. By the way, I tried the FFT function in Decibel X, and the lowest number on the graph is 64Hz. I guess that's all you get a with a phone mic. I am going to look at REW (Room Equalization Wizard which is free) and the miniDSP UMIK-1, which is a calibrated USB mic that costs $75.

@@cheapaudioman Right - the thing about good speakers is - they sound different with different recordings. And sometimes, when we get used to a particular speaker, and how it sounds with familiar music - sometimes another speaker will seem "wrong" until you try it with a wide variety of recordings, and music. My current speakers, Linaeum LT1000, I got for $400 for the pair (they were $1800 in about 1991), from a pawn shop *right* before the pandemic hit - have blown me away. I thought I knew what revealing aka transparent speakers were ... My biggest disappointment by far - is George Harrison's All Things Must Pass. I *love* many of the songs, but they go from weak and distant to excruciating on these speakers. This was the remastered HiDef version on Qobuz, so maybe the remaster screwed it up? But the wall of sound (by the highly disturbed Phil Spector) used to sound FINE on the crappy GE portable stereo (bought with GREENSTAMPS!), or the 1970's KLH Six speakers of my family's first "real" stereo.

The P5 and the P3 are solid choices for the money. At $300 I’d put the P5 ahead of the Q150. At $400, you are right, the P5 is tuff to recommend. My problem is that I would get the B1+ at $300 or even $400. The B1+ is my choice under $400. Above that, I lean toward the UB52.

I have a pair of PSB P5 and love them. 😎 As soon as I plugged them, I knew they were good. I compared them to a lot of speakers: KEF Q150: I found the KEF too "boomy" in my room. Both speakers were setup at 8 inch from touching the wall (on speaker stands). Tried using the foam plug with the KEF but I still was not convinced. Klipsch RP-500M: After watching all the reviews I though this would be it. But I found the sound lean and didn't like the "coming at you" presentation. It may be because of the horn? (It was my first time hearing that type of speaker). Clean and clear but felt like something was missing... BW 607 SE: Really liked these speakers. The sound was clean and clear BUT treble was too much for me. It hurt my ears. My dad loved them, but I think it's because his hearing is... not getting better with age 😋 KEF LS50: The most expensive of the bunch with more details but dull to listen too to my taste. (where is the bass!?!!) In short, to me the PSB P5 are exactly how you describe them. Fun to listen too, bump in the bass but still very clear and clean midrange+treble. Good at both low and high volume because of that. The tone is good and the music sounds real. Even tried PSB's more expensive Imagine XB and liked the P5 better. QA was also an issue for me. I had one speaker that was DOA. Dealer quickly sent back a new pair and all is good 🙂 Enjoy!
