@@ronmurphy4234 I don't know. It's been a long time since I visited. I think high end audio in general is in decline. A whole generation thinks that MP3s are just fine and the recording industry isn't doing much to change that with the over use of compression and such.
No matter how extravagant or frivolous or pointless or essential it may seem to others, it's always fantastic and inspiring to see someone pursue their passion to completion and live to enjoy the fruits of their passion.

RIP Ken. So happy for you that you saw your dream to fruition. I really enjoyed seeing the passion you put into your project.
As mentioned below, the audio system fetched just $156,800 at auction. Fritz died of ALS a couple of years ago, suffering an affliction that slowly removed his ability to use, then appreciate, the project that took so much money and work. A nicely done Washington Post story from today (Jan. 13, 2024) also chronicles how his obsession pushed his marriage into divorce and caused a rift that prompted him to disinherited one of his sons. I was actually surprised to see that the equipment sold for that much. Reminds me of what a stamp-collecting friend told me many years ago: enjoy the hobby, and know that the collection will someday be worth 10 cents on the dollar, if that.

I’m only a few minutes into this video and I’ve been checking out the comments and I’m even more stoked than I was by the title. I’m 56 and back in the 70’s and 80’s a Hi-Fi was a major focal point for the home. Inviting someone over to hear the latest Peter Frampton album was considered a date. Sound quality was all about bragging rights! I had the Pioneer A-90 integrated amp that was 200 watts per channel at .002% total harmonic distortion. It was the first amplifier to eliminate switching distortion by using push-pull circuitry between the low and high voltage supplies. It also had a pre-amp for the phono input. It could be switched to Moving Magnet (MM) or Moving Cartridge (MC) which could be switched between 33 ohms or 100 ohms. I also had the Pioneer SG-90 17 band per channel 2/3 octave EQ and the bands went from 16Hz - 25KHz and it had .001% THD. I always wanted the Polk SDA-SRS speakers but I couldn’t afford them. Back then the Infinity Reference speakers cost $50,000 and were what all other speakers were supposed to be compared to for sound quality. I financed a $3,000 Pioneer stereo when I was 17 and was making $3.25 and hour! It wasn’t just about having loud music to bang my head. I wanted to feel the triplets Steve Gadd played on Aja in crystal clarity and the squeak of Bonzo’s Speed King on Since I’ve Been Loving You!

I recall as a kid haunting stereo shops and annoying sales staff as we dreamed of seemingly unattainable systems. This mans dream came to wonderous fruition. I admire that greatly.
So glad I watched your video, it made me cry. My Dad was an amazing provider, father, faithful husband, 3 time Ironman finisher, very successful CPA entrepreneur, journeyman carpenter, and so on... accomplished many, many great things, yet he struggled with the balance of his many endeavors, albeit all of them worthwhile.. though he died suddenly last year at 70 years old. I remark that he passed away suddenly to acknowledge that my while father was in optimal physical health (lifelong triathlete and marathon runner, non-smoker, non-drinker, etc.) happily married to my mother, and was able to retire wealthy, he passed away far sooner than anyone could have expected. Your sentiments on the balance of time in every man's life rang especially poignant and reflective. I wanted to thank you for sharing your story, as to provide testament to the theme of your documentary, I believe we can best honor our parents by heeding the advice you very eloquently provided; work hard to achieve one's goals, without disregard to gather thine rosebuds, while ye may. Thank you Mr. Fritz for your great story and well made documentary! Sincerely, Andrew MacGillivray II

This is going to get a lot of views after the Washington Post essay that just came out. I think many of us technical people have a bit of Ken Fritz in us. I am sorry that he was so uncompromising over the years, and that this caused such strife for his family. Scott, I can see that this was a bit of an attempt to connect with your father on the one thing that was so important to him. I suspect Ken died with regrets about his treatment and lack of time with his children. It was quite an achievement, but it came at considerable cost. I think this little film was well-made in helping us understand a little more about your dad. Thanks for sharing it.

Such drive and passion and knowledge!! A man of good taste . I think most of us take our hat off to you. Special person in my book. I will never forget your name . Seem like a man with a great soul.

Having designed and helped built my own 4 way horn speakers, I can appreciate how Massive of an achievement this is - I don’t think 99.99% of people watching this realize how difficult this is to accomplish, on so many levels. Bravo!!!

The crossover alone just blows my mind. Let alone the design and choosing drivers and spacing of them and so on. I can’t comprehend the organization and planning it takes to do this. I designed 2 ways that never got done. I even have some infinity big boys that just need a tweeter and can’t choose one that fits and also operates with the factory crossover. This dude earned every dollar he ever made I guarantee it. Amazing mind.

This guy built his dream and passion . Got to give him credit. I used 1989 carver amp and pre amp with Klipsch Forta ll speakers. When I heard a musicians finger slide down a steel guitar string , I knew I made the right choice . Sadly , the pre amp went on the friz several years ago . I switched to a 5 channel sound system , my hearing is not what it was .

i disagree with you, i think 99% of the people realize how "Massive of an achievement" of waste of $ and mostly time this project is i would love to be his local sound engineer (or whatever its called), "sure Mr. Ken, thats a great idea, oh, and we sure can implement it for 280k" while inside he thinks "what a dumb donkey this dude is" and "my kids got a new computer, and a laptop, and a new tv, and ...." ROFLMAO
I really like this man and how he said “ when you get to do it one last time you don’t cut any corners “

I love how humble this man seems. He knows exactly how crazy it all is to most of you, but he didn't build any of it for you! He knew what he wanted and set coarse on the journey. But it sounds like his only regret is not slowing down long enough to smell the roses along the way. I wish the best Ken, that is one hell of a thing ya did there! Cheers man 🍻.

What a passion this gentleman had. An inspiration.
I was lucky enough to work for Mark Levinson Audio back in 79' and 80'(which was about 4 years? before he started Krell) so I was on the cutting edge of this technology...the man was a PERFECTIONIST and his HQD System would literally take your breath away. Tom Colangelo was the Chief Design Engineer for Mark and Tom was a GENIUS...I can remember spending many nights and weekends working with him doing R&D. I know this man has a passion that few can understand let alone afford but good for him that he can do it...

Ken you are amazing!!! I am past 76 and still learning every day.Thank you so much fr this wonderful opportunity.
I took a much simpler path by buying a fifteen watt tube integrated amp playing a 93db horn loaded speaker. To me that sound is heavenly but I certainly understand and appreciate his passion, Bravo!
This is literally what dreams are made of. I am totally fascinated and by this, and probably just as taken with the joy and passion I can feel listening to your explanation of it all.
This is amazing and kind of lonely and sad . I can relate . I imagine the thrill of the chase and the process of creation was at least as satisfying ( if not more ) as listening to the music . In the end it was all for nothing . Life is cruel to the dreamer . The most human audiophile I've ever heard .
It's great minds like Ken's who are to thank for things that make our lives easier and enjoyable. Their drive to create, build, get through obstacles, learn, and perfect are amazing. Thank God for people like Ken.

I have nothing but my utmost respect for that level of dedication and that level of understanding about how persistence and attention to detail amount to something so unique and special. This is truly something that needs to be conserved as a memory to this inspiring man.
What struck me in addition to the incredible work you did, is the humility shown in your interview. I respect you very much........
This is beyond impressive. I'd love to meet Ken and listen not only to the incredible Stereo system he built, but also to even more of the story and experience building it. I built my own home cinema in my house all alone and I know how much time and effort it takes to make even small parts things and details. Even though Ken's room is worlds beyond my cinema. Dear Ken, if you read this, I wish you all the best and many beautiful years with your music system and your family.

Lot of mistakes in the design, like separating the mids = comb filtering problems. If U R thinking of 'mirror imaging' something 2 increase volume, a better solution is 2 use a bigger &/or more powerful driver instead, 2 keep the size 2 a minimum. Ideally everything would come from a 'point source' but the closer U can get 2 that the better, 4 'coherence' & 'imaging' =) I've heard lots of line arrays, & the BG panels & so on. These sound better just won't go as loud ~> paulrand.coolpage.biz/Images/Toobz!.jpg
"While they are impressive, what truly astounds is our ears capacity to discern such precise audio."

Man, I was not expecting having to pause this a few times to collect myself near the end. Forget the audio, forget the clamps. Thank you for the collection.
I love you Ken....I'm an electrical engineer and involved in stereos for 63 years! I built my first speakers when I was 15, in a homemade tuned acoustic maze enclosure, 3/4" plywood, walnut veneer, 12 Woofer, tweeter and midrange...kind of Bose design before there was a Bose. I wound up with AR3a... You have great description and video....I truly LOVE YOU!
What a Documentary, What a Legend, What a Legacy, an absolute masterpiece. I was so excited when you picked the sample track to play. I was smiling from ear to ear knowing full well i would never hear what you will experience but I was so excited. I can't begin to imagine the quality of the system paired perfectly with the room, its as if the whole room plus the system is at one.
That was amazing. I just stopped working and may retire and I particularly listened to, and loved this mans reflection on his journey, past present and future. Fascinating.
When the guy asked him how much his turntable costs fritz responded politely with a non direct yet personal response without mentioning an actual dollar amount for his specific table. That tells me Fritz is a very down to earth guy who's mentally is based in reality given his personal wealth. He doesn't brag, and he knows not everyone is as lucky as he is. Good man.
