    I thought those speakers were very listenable and affordable. If they were on some low stands to raise the tweeter to ear level and then a slight boost added to the treble, I think they would be most excellent for 95% of audiophiles. I was quite impressed with the bass and mid-bass. Nice job Ron!

    I'm older (listening to speakers since the 1960's. Had JBL L200, L100's, Mirage, subs etc. Over the years I've moved away from extreme detail and detest listening fatique. Other's love it. Very subjective. I like vocals now, male and femaie, a little chesty doesn't bother me and a smooth sound is what I prefer at this point. For the money, I thought these speakers were an excellent value and gave me what I wanted. I think a sub would make them a little better but considering you don't need stands if compared to some bookshelf alternatives, again, a good value. Excellent review and I agreed with pretty much everything you said.

    I have a pair of the Alpha T1s with the woofer tweeter woofer arrangement, hooked up to an old NAD 7020e inter amp (same as the 3020 but with a digital tuner) They sound ok, lack air and detail and a bit wooly. Mids are their strong point They actually sound a lot better when I pair them with my diy chip amp and tube pre, they come alive more

    It's been three years since this was aired but I gotta say I'm amazed at the mid-bass impact from such a short tower with twin 5 1/4" woofers. I thought they sounded great, particularly for the price. In my HT I wouldn't be able to pull them away from the back wall much more than 2' so I would be concerned the mid-bass would be bloated and overdone. If I do decide to get them I would have to put them on 10"-12" risers because at 32 1/2" H they're too short for my liking. I'm in no hurry as I'm waiting to see sound tests and reviews on Emotiva's new XT2 towers. I'm currently running Emo's B2+ bookshelf speakers as the mains in my HT rig along with their C1+ center channel which are being driven by their BasX A3 amp.

    Waiting for the review. A great deal from Paul Barton. Next, do the (also) affordable JBL Stage 170/180. Sometimes even Crutchfield has them on special. I think it’s important to remember the kind of electronics the speakers are going to be hooked up to. Cheap surround receivers tend to sound thin and bright. Also most people spending $650 for a pair of speakers won’t have a treated room so it’s bound to be a little lively. I think they thought of that.

    Addressing your "hearing a tweeter" comment, Paul Barton has always seemed to prefer metal dome tweeters in many of his designs for whatever reason. Perhaps he got a great deal on a huge lot of them, who knows...LOL. Having owned several of his bookshelf models in the past, I felt these metal dome tweeters sounded a little sharp for my taste. I eventually sold every pair for that reason.

  • @darpanbhuyan1909

    @darpanbhuyan1909

    For me, the experience was quite the opposite. the metal dome tweeters have that distinct sparkle which provides that extra touch of satisfaction missing from any other tweeter design that i have (AMT, horn, ribbon, soft dome). So i guess i get where Paul Barton is coming from.

    Any clue where to get any data on these? Saw something that was maybe in polish, unable to read. But one freq. response chart on that site made me think that there’s quite a hole dip from crossover not reaching / crossing very far. If you lower frequencies anywhere, pretty sure the ones next to those will stand out (regarding the tweeter grabbing your attention type effect)

    What happened to the VPI? I hope you've made room for a Schiit Sol to take its place. The PSB's have very good driver integration, phase coherency, and wide frequency response but are somewhat compressed and congested. As long as dynamics and articulation are not your first priority, they offer a very well-balanced sound for the modest price.

    I attended a training session with Paul Barton. He designs speakers by getting ordinary people into a room with a set of speakers. They can then fiddle with tone controls until they get the sound that they like. PSB then designs the speakers around the sound that the majority of people like. I questioned him about how accurate a sound would be if it was designed around someone's preferences, who had no experience with speakers or live musical performances. He replied that everyone knows what a guitar sounds like. If your friend plays a guitar over the phone, you know what it is. So, if you like speakers designed by a bunch of off the street folks with no knowledge, have at it! Personally, I'll take speakers with a lot more science and engineering behind them. GR Research, comes to mind.

    Could be an issue w the mics bc of how much room they pick up being pulled back a lot off the speakers. You’d never mic a bass amp that far away for example.

  • @rogerb5957
    @rogerb5957 Жыл бұрын

    Just recently discovered your channel and while I really like this format for reviewing a speaker, I do have one comment about the way you do these clips. I understand the reason for pulling the speakers so far out into the room, but let's be honest here, the vast majority of us are going to have or speakers relatively close to the back wall of our listening spaces. So by presenting the speakers so far out into room in a "sound clip" type review, we are not really hearing the speakers in a manner consistent with how the vast majority of us will hear them.

    Hey Ron, without question your room has some treatment, but, the rear of each speaker is directed straight at the windows between the red (base traps) and the grey wall mounted sections - can’t see the walls but being the over educated couch potato (that I’ve been accused of) does this impact the room listening experience? Or did your big boss dictate terms? Porting rear, front or downwards would change things greatly. Not detracting from your tube - your channel and others including Danny’s keeps me sane, all jokes aside. I’ll be surely constructing some dipole units when possible. Or am I just being anal about the topic, some rooms just have that (lack of resonance) sound. Have a good day man, I exist on the other side of the planet 🌎 yourself and family stay safe, those numbers are becoming disturbing 🇦🇺✌🏽
