    You need a killer pair of headphones, something with lower distortion than the speakers being demoed. I use the Hifiman HE400s for this, with each speaker demo it sounds completely different!

    Hi Ron. I’m very grateful to have listened to the music and your comments on it. I am hoping that for the review you will include both female and male vocals that have good projection, so we can see if the female goes sibilant etc at higher levels and similarly if the male goes chesty with a big bass singing. With love, Ken

    Glad you are enjoying the Spatial M3S. Today on my M3S I was cranking some Porcupine Tree Metanoia especially tracks 3,6,7. Lots of repetition in these instrumental jams but lots of subtlety flows in and out and the recording is just excellent. I marvel at how well it all hold together so well when this music gets fast and congested. All the musical (psychedelic) lines just flow beautifully.

    @@kenheidenreich3458 I actually listened to it on my laptop speakers. Personally I think it is difficult to draw too many conclusion from a recorded demo. Even though Ron's are better than most. I do think that some things come though like sibilance for example. So while I do not know a percentage there is some insight to be had so maybe 50%. Also I think Ron's room is much better than mine. I have an awkward room which got me interested in open baffle to begin with and they made a big difference. Having listened to Ron a lot over the years I would give more weight to Ron's descriptions. I think Spatial still has the 60 day trial where you can return if you want and only pay shipping which is a little pricey but should be part of your budget if you are buying some high end speakers these days. Sometimes we just need to home audition our short list.

Doesnt sound like you are playing at reference levels and still getting such a dynamic, fullness. Could be the perfect speaker for people who play at lower volumes. Now if you only had a home theater setup, cant imagine what sapphires would sound like as fronts with a sapphire center channel.

    @Marten Dekker just speaking for myself, I would not feel comfortable with a home trial unless I was at least 90% sure of keeping them. It doesn't work if your shortlist still includes 10 different speakers you want to hear before you buy. It's a pity that it's always so hard to hear speakers before buying and even more importantly. to hear them in ones own listening room! I've often thought that the best way would be to have a dealer ship several at once, so you can compare them back to back and pick a favourite. At least this way there is a high chance of a sale.

    Amazing review, I love the format. This makes me regret that I smashed my diy open baffle speakers when I moved from a house to an apartment ten years ago. Now I don't blame the speakers, but I think the voices sound a bit less than great on the recording, they have a slight touch of a papery cardboard boxish sound (i.e. around 22:40). I'd guess it could be that the mic is too close to those huge membranes and get an off axis response, it would be cool to hear them recorded from your listening position, even if it becomes mono. I recommend checking out Jana Dagdagans binaural recordings of sterosystems for inspiration, they are pretty cool.

    A nice review format, nicely done. Very interesting speakers. How do they compare with Danny R's open baffles? One thing I noted, good-sounding room. It is (surprisingly? unsurprisingly?) rare among those making claim to this avocation to see a room acoustically treated as well and sounding as good, as yours. It's evidenced in both the music playback and the sound of your in-room vocal commentary. Tasteful decor and acoustic treatments and equipment set up, too; it looks well put together.

    As always thanks for the time and effort you put into your videos, you are really "eat up" with this :-). Two questions if I may, are your external mics even with your seating position and at your ear level? It is too hard to tell from a flat 2D video. Secondly, it means more work but including your music tracks would be much appreciated. And while I am on a roll, how about dedicating an episode to identifying great sound tracks. I am sure you have played your share of outstanding tracks (as well has chalkboard tunes, I know I have). I have spent years of picking through Tidal, all genres, to find wonderfully emotionally sounding music. Chris

    Nice format for a review, and you are achieving great in-room sound compared to other videos which attempt this. Only suggestion I have is to use more variety of music - this selection was all very similar. Highly processed music and guitars tend to sound pleasing on most systems, whether true to the recording or not. On the other hand, raw acoustic recordings of real instruments are the most challenging to reproduce faithfully because we know what they should sound like. Perhaps try a live acoustic recording of piano, drums, bass guitar, a wind instrument and vocals.

    I was thinking this too. But I heard the female vocals (a difficult genre to reproduce well) part way through the playlist and they sounded great. I like the playlist, but consider adding more variety, more vocals, violin, cello, and if you can find some well-recorded piano. And if possible, A/B test against a set of speakers we may be familiar with. Sound demos without A/B tests are really hard to judge. PS: perhaps a video about how you set up the recording and equipment you're using and the room measurements and treatments. And yes, your comments on what you're hearing are helpful. Keep up the great work.

    A few things you might want to try..... 1: Put some felt rings right around the tweeter.....just covering the black flat part of the tweeter only. 2: Then try some felt across the whole top of the baffle...right to the edges of the speaker. 3: Remove the perforated cover on the tweeter. The felt will reduce diffraction and most tweeter covers mess with clarity and phase. Will take just a few minutes to try these things....assuming you have some cheap wool felt laying around (super cheap at fabric store or currently on line). 4. Bi-wire the speakers. You can run a second wire directly from your amp to the tweeters...essentially bypassing the binding posts, wires to speakon connector, the speakon connector and the wire running inside the baffle to the tweeter......there is no xover on the tweeter, you don't really need all those extra parts. The tweeter will be more revealing with bi-amping......but you will have to select the the type of tweeter wire so you get the detail you want with the musicality that you want.....as there will be less parts to veil/soften the sound. Have fun. These are things I would do within the first hour of listening to these speakers.....but I am a tweak nut.

    the advantages if true seem like it'd still hamper the design of the mids and be highs, wouldn't open baffle subwoofers be a better idea? same goes for the devialet phantom which is a way over priced subwoofer with a pointless full range driver when it should just be something more like the b and w pv1 but priced more reasonable. I'll try getting some 16 inch drivers and putting together some open baffle subwoofers. I tend to prefer sealed, and even passive radiators over reflex ported. the open baffle woofers I've heard tended to sound more lkke a club.

    I really enjoyed the format, getting to see a reviewer in action. I do however wish that you had used a couple of more masculine male vocals, in addition to the wispy boyish style. I don't expect to be able to hear what the speakers are truly like, but along with your comments, it allows me to know if they're worth looking into. After all, if I was hearing "exactly" what you had heard, I certainly wouldn't need new speakers. Also.......No playlist???

    Lampizador cannot cost $3800 because (I saw it on their photos) it uses amanero USB transport from ebay without galvanic insulation, very-very weak power supply of the main board (I'm sure 3.3V jumps +-10-20 mV), no I2S recovery/insulating circuit which eliminates jitter, and only tubes sell this device. It is _identical_ to many DACs on ebay, man. This is true. And a fair price is $200 +$50 for chassis.

    Great channel - now that you’re a full time content creator it would be great if you answered as many comments as you can. That would set you apart from others . The other thing that would elevate you above other reviewers that “sell out” would be your opinion on how equipment reviews stack up to other comparable equipment. That being said, you seem to ignore the question on how these $5k/pair speakers compare to GR Research open baffle speakers. GR Research is probably the better buy (maybe not if you have to add open baffle subs to GR Research speakers). So question is: Are you really an independent, unbiased reviewer? Starting to have my doubts - hope I’m wrong!

  • @Newrecordday2013

    @Newrecordday2013

    Actually I have answered the question a few times. The Oticas must have the subs to compete with the Spatials so all in, you are close to the same price, depending on options. Both are excellent and have pros and cons. Essentially, it comes down to what you want and are able to do... are you serious about DIY? The Oticas are NOT a weekend, beginner project...
