Active sitting - could we give our kids a future without back pain | Turner Osler | TEDxStowe

Why do 80% of Americans seek medical care for backpain during their lives, compared to only 3% of Japanese? In this fascinating talk Turner Osler examines the sitting disease that afflicts the western world, and suggests a $5 solution for our kids so that they will not suffer the same fate. Turner Osler was an academic trauma surgeon (University of Vermont) for over 20 years with over 300 peer reviewed papers and book chapters. But then he went off script, got a masters in Biostatistics, an NIH grant and abandoned the operating room to study trauma epidemiology. Somewhere in the last decade he became obsessed with the problems that come from sitting too much. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    I grabbed my cheap balance board and put a seat cushion on top. It's the kind of balance board that is a round circle with a half sphere underneath. I put it on a chair. And now I have an active chair 👍 Yay!

    I did the same using semi sphere utensil and stool instead of chair. Although, the board glides sometimes but manageable.

    Adam, Thanks, but I'm no Steve Jobs. (Just ask my son...). But I do think that I was lucky enough to hit on a solution to a problem that many people have. And crucially, I've discovered a community of people who have the skills to get this solution out into the world. For example, I'm not a natural speaker, but the TEDx people taught me how to give a competent talk. If you want to learn how to speak in public, sign up to give a TED Talk. -turner

    @@TurnerOsler Oh wow, hi! You are such a big inspiration, I'm a rather young kid to be watching TEDx talks but I love them and loved yours so much. I have one question, why not use another material other than wood and leather; I have an idea for your chairs where they can be made by basalt composite and polyethene from plastic waste which can be substitute leather. The chair itself will be made like the ones you make now but just 3d printed. I hope that many people can see your idea and I hope that it'll change the world!

    Hello! Sorry just responding to everyone, I actually do not use it anymore, it ended up being not as comfortable to sit on it the way he suggests, I ended up sitting on it backwards more like a straddle which I liked more and helped keep it more stable. I like the idea of using your back muscles and not being lazy but I found it hard to focus at my job without having the stability, and with it constantly moving.

    The Button Chair is affordable if you make it for yourself. If we involve a high end US manufacturer of kids furniture, the cost skyrocket. I'm embarrassed that I can't find a cheaper alternative to provide complete chairs in boxes. But, really, it's the design that can't be much cheaper: we give it away.

    Simply an advert for the chair. ...You might already realize that although I suspect most commercial homeopathy practice is bunk, the principles in homeopathy of eustress & distress are important and valid as used in vaccines, exercise, and many other activities & pursuits, and hinted in the notion of 'active sitting'. The question I had was how the 'potato chip' critical curvatures were chosen. Each requires different muscle sets, and I suspect might be optimal for a certain body build & condition. However, I have seen no discussion of whether these were chosen for physiological/ergonomic or comfort (sales) purposes. Initially, you might consider inserting 4 foam wedges of firm (later softer) foam padding, Changing and eventually removing them as your body gets use to them.

  • @TurnerOsler

    @TurnerOsler

    4 жыл бұрын

    fjtubie, I completely agree: your internal ergonomics are perfect, and if you're lucky enough to be able to easily access them you should sit on the simplest stool you can find. However, many people aren't as lucky as you, and for these people we've found that active sitting can be a great way to access their inner ergonomics. And, once folks get the hang of active sitting, many find that they can sit comfortably on a simple stool if that's what on offer. So, it's sort of like our active chairs help people to learn to use their bodies more effectively, and more comfortably. -turner
