Sugar -- the elephant in the kitchen: Robert Lustig at TEDxBermuda 2013

Robert H. Lustig is an American pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) where he is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics.
Dr. Lustig assesses the health dangers of sugar and its link to Type-2 diabetes and the global obesity epidemic. He is the author of several books and many articles on childhood obesity, including the recent "Obesity Before Birth."
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Thanks! 20 years ago, I realized that I was addicted to sugar in all its forms (molasses, honey, etc.). Sugar was devastating my health--I was overweight, pre-diabetic, and having trouble with cavities. I also obsessed about food issues, with lots of guilt and unhappiness. So, I stopped eating sugar in all its forms. It was hard, but only for a few weeks. After quitting for years at a time, I relapsed a few times--thinking, like an alcoholic, that I could eat just a little sugar. But, due to the build-up of tolerance, a little sugar led to a lot. I, finally, realized that I could never eat sugary sweets again. I eat mostly unprocessed foods and avoid as much as possible the sugar in salad dressings, etc. I use stevia as a sweetener, which gives me no health problems and has 0 calories. I'm 70 now. My weight is normal; I'm extremely active and healthy--I take no medications at all. Not eating sugar has freed me from food hangups and health problems. If you want the details of why Lustig is so anti-sugar, read his book "The Hacking of the American Mind."

gekiryudojo I have a very good idea since I avoid sugar in all forms. However, if you limit your intake drastically, a bit of sugar won't poison you. For most Americans that means that they have to dump all soft drinks, processed meals, cereal and sugary snacks. That would enable them to eat a sugary desert every one or two weeks without negative consequences. Unfortunately, we have lost that balance completely.

Maybe because of the delivery? The way he's dressed? I had the sound off and was just reading subtitles last night after everyone went to sleep and it was informative and really pulled me in. Didn't finish it last night, so this morning I have the sound on and am watching and listening and honestly, I've stopped watching at the 20-minute mark because he is so aggressive and sounds so angry and then goes after libertarians (I am not a libertarian, but any group singled out is just wrong -- they didn't cause this as far as I know) and just seems holier than thou and YUCK! Where was HE 40 years ago? I hope he was sounding the alarm then, because I am totally turned off by this. I am here asking WHY are you so angry with me? It's not like he's angry at the system, he's angry with ME (or libertarians, but I'm bearing the brunt of it). Where was I 40 years ago? Why wasn't I doing something? I get it ... don't eat sugar, the food industry sucks. The rest is aggressive, angry diatribe that has left me feeling SO uncomfortable ... and not in a good way. There are other TEDx talks that get their point across much more eloquently and thought-provokingly -- watch "Sugar is Not a Treat" by Jody Stanislaw - TEDxSunValley. This dude is just too angry AT me instead of WITH me.

3 weeks ago, I cut out all sugar out of my diet. I went on a low carb/high fat diet. some call it a keto diet. I have lost 15 lbs., my energy is up, my auto-immune symptoms are going way down, I have my life back. It's not that hard to do, there are many substitutes for sugar, erythritol, stevia, etc. My husband has also lost the same amount of weight, and his afternoon slumps are gone, his skin looks brighter, we're both happier. I didn't realize just how bad sugar was for our bodies til we adopted this way of eating and eliminating sugar and all but 20 grams of carbs per day.

Ever since I became a constant client. I decided to follow their advice. I also started to use their wonderful products for all those years. Addiction to foods. Sugar is highly addictive. Why do you think McDonalds soak their french fries in usage water? The brain/body prefers fat for fuel. It is a cleaner fuel. If you do more research you will find that sugar/bad carbs are causing so many health issues over time. Google keto diet and ? whatever - and disease or health condition you can think of.

Because the food processing industry knows it is addicting, so when you eat the mayo with sugar added your brain says Ummm, this mayo tastes better, so buy it next time! Same with canned beans, ketchup, salad dressings, etc. If you quit ALL sources of processed sugars for at least 30 days, unsweetened foods will taste so much better, and sweetened foods will taste waaay too sweet. The food manufacturers know this, they want us to keep buying processed foods so it's added to everything so we have a hard time excluding it UNLESS we read every label or just quit eating anything processed in any way. If you need sweetener for coffee or tea, you can safely use stevia extract, not Truvia or other processed stevia, only pure extract.

Let me tell you how ingrained sugar is in today's schools. When I was still in HIGH SCHOOL (I am 70-years old now), I remember when they removed the vending machines containing fresh apples and oranges, and replaced them with candy machines. When parents complained about it, the government told the candy manufacturers that they had to offset the selling of all these sugary candies with something "educational." So they immediately complied. They started showing 'educational' films in the classroom, ON THE HISTORY OF THE TOOTSIE ROLL!!! I can't make something like this up, this really happened. Vegetables are great for you, a piece of fruit a day is fine for most people, and some can even handle more. Insulin sensitive people can even handle things like sour dough bread, potatoes and rice. Not everyone is the same and the body can and will metabolize glucose and/or manufacture it. If you are lean, active and young, upwards of 100 grams of carbs might be fine. Others do better on less. Others on a ketogenic diet.

The sugar problem is rooted in people's need for short term satisfaction at the expense of their long term health; sugar gives people that fast energy spike for which they would sacrifice their long term health. The food industry exists to make money, if people crave sugar, sugar will be added. Government won't step in because food industry generates a lot of tax revenues. Nobody, except yourself, can make the correct food decision for yourself. The capitalist world operates on profits, and since any social system has flaws you can't expect a capitalist society to make decisions that care about the long term health of its population; capital is short sighted. For those of you that watch this video, you are already taking important steps to educate yourself, so make sure to educate others around you as well.

I went keto, cut out sugar, juice drinks, soda, refined carbs, cut way back on weight products. The personal responsibility of children is the parents. I started ‘Time restricted eating ‘( I eat, once a day for 3 days a week). I fast 3-4 days a week. Have low blood sugars, check it several times a day, and keto numbers got. Cholesterol numbers good, and dropping triglycerides, and increased HDL I get called ‘Whole Food Guy’ all the time. SHOWED THEM IT COSTS EQUAL OR LESS TO EAT AS I do. We cook & make almost all we eat.

$245B for diabetes + $200B for dementia, all going from patient-victims, and going to... Where my lawyer at? All I've studied points to insulin as the main enemy of health. Dr Jason Fung makes some good arguments. Also, excess protein causes an insulin response.

Sods is very addicting. The only drink my mother and aunt wanted days before death was Coke. My boss drank no coffee just Pepsi - morning and afternoon.

I'd like to see a tax on sugar in processed foods much like the tax on tobacco. Enough to make fruit loops more expensive than weet-bix, and standard coke should cost twice as much as diet coke.

diet soda is just as bad in a different way. you may not gain weight but it will messs up your gut biome which can cause as much problems are being overweight. i do agree with the idea though. lets remove tax from whole food and tax processed sugar more

Good reason to believe that although artificial sweaters don't raise your blood glucose, it does induce an insulin response. Too much insulin is a bad thing.

I am Portuguese and here we tax higher sugar processed foods and we have limits for sugar for many foods. The US should do the same but the problem is that the food industry there is bigger than in any other country and we all know how much power do those companies have.

I'm here because one of my close kin is diabetic. When we asked him what he used to do he said he used he used to drink 2 big sodas everyday and that was not even enough he said, which means he was drinking more than 2 sodas. And he had coronovirus recently the doctors said he wouldn't make it.. but gladly he made it. And recovered.. his kidneys are bad too which i think was caused by diabetic. No soda people.. you were not brought to this world to have sweet things, do you see how bitter life is. If you force yourself to have sweeteners you will get diabetic. Team bitter 👌

I used to have a lot of sugar in my diet. I wasn’t able to cut it all out, but made a drastic reduction by targeting sugary snacks I used to have daily. And by not adding sugar to things like coffee or cereal. I lost 15 pounds in 2 months. And another 5 a few months later

Dr. Lustig is not rail thin like some of the folks we see promoting natural diets, vegan diets, but he is not obese, heck he looks to be in normal weight for his height. His message is primarily about added sugar in our diet, he has some ideas worth considering, a unique vantage point (children starting life) he has a lot of merit I think.
