The Most Powerful Strategy for Healing People and the Planet | Michael Klaper | TEDxTraverseCity

NOTE FROM TED: While some viewers might find advice provided in this talk to be helpful as a complementary approach, please do not look to this talk for medical advice as nutrigenomics is currently an emerging field of study. We've flagged this talk for falling outside TEDx's curatorial guidelines. This talk only represents the speaker’s personal views and experiences with diet, chronic illness, molecular biology, and human health. Certain statements and claims are not yet supported by legitimate scientific evidence. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Dr. Klaper says he had an awakening while putting people to sleep. When we awaken to the damage that a meat-based diet creates in our body and the toll that the industrial production of animal flesh inflicts upon our planet, we then become aware that the single most effective action anyone can take to improve their personal health and help heal our injured planet is to reduce, or better, eliminate their consumption of meat. Dr. Michael Klaper is a gifted clinician, internationally recognized teacher, and sought-after speaker on diet and health. He has practiced medicine for more than 40 years and is a leading educator in applied plant-based nutrition and integrative medicine. He is also the author of a successful book on cholesterol-free nutrition and an upcoming title (to be announced in 2018), as well as numerous DVDs and Videos on Demand, a series of “Healthy YOU Webinars,” and dozens of articles. A source of inspiration advocating plant-based diets and the end of animal cruelty worldwide, Dr. Klaper contributed to the making of two PBS television programs Food for Thought and the award-winning Diet for a New America movie based on the book of the same name. Dr. Michael Klaper teaches that “Health Comes From Healthy Living” and is dedicated to the healing and flourishing of all living beings and our planet. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

To illustrate one of the points Dr. Klaper makes; My grandfather died at 62 from a heart attack. His son, my father, had a major heart attack at 62 and was only saved by a triple bypass. Needless to say, I was apprehensive as I approached my 62nd birthday. However, I've been on a plant-based diet for thirty years and, when I did need a minor abdominal hernia op at 63, the hospital gave me a thorough medical. The anesthetist literally didn't believe it when I said I was on zero medication, and the surgeon said I had the heart and lungs of an 18 year-old. I'm now approaching my 67th birthday, and I feel like I'm still 18. One of the pivotal moments in my life was watching Dr. Klaper's lecture from a couple of decades ago, "A Diet for All Reasons." In short, this man changed my life, very much for the better.

I lived off off of home grown garden produce it was great! I have to be honest I still like my good piece grass fed beef twice a month. Exercise and eating 80 percent of your calories by 2:00pm and the other 20 percent by no later than 6:00pm. Detailed studies on this fact has been around for a long time. There are building blocks that you have to have as you build up your health portfolio. I still eat baked chicken with no skin and fish once a week along with unprocessed produce which is more expensive. The fact is that most people can’t afford to eat clean, have you seen the price of organic produce? It’s very high not to m nation the food deserts in the poor or underfunded communities! Right no is I am not totally cutting off high quality meat on occasion. I can tell you I started a high intensity resistance, aerobic and anaerobic exercise program along with a good diet has changed my life. I still have a ways to go I have lost 40lbs dropped 6 inches off my waist, increased my street and flexibility by at least 50 percent. Two, actually three other critical steps complete your path to a longer and healthier life. Number one increase your water intake and cut out sugar based drinks period. If you can use reverse osmosis water it costly but you will feel the difference but water will be fine. Drink at least half your body weight in fluid ounces so if you weigh 200lbs drink at least 100oz a day more during the hot summer months especially while exercising. Second, learn how to breath properly like breathing through your nose even when you sleep it takes commitment but once you get it down again the benefits are life changing. Third is proper sleep duration & quality the studies show 7 to 8 hrs optimal and quality sleep: REM rapid eye movement means your body is in a state of repair and recovery. I am still learning and this is one more block to the foundation of health!

Veganism is essentially a nutritious long-term fast. You will need the full spectrum of amino acids that come from animal collagen eventually. You can at first thrive but eventually the dietary incompleteness will set in. Stay alert to little things in your body as time goes by. If you are raising little children this way they will suffer in intelligence and growth measures compared to other kids on a SAD diet (even though SAD is causing type 1 diabetes and early heart issues in kids).

What a great man is Dr Klaper. This lecture is inspirational, informative, and straight to the point. I have been vegan for about 18 months. My Dr had to take me off anti-hypertensive drugs, my cholesterol levels fell to below average, I lost 14 kilograms in body weight, the arthritis in my right hip and knee improved greatly, my GFR improved, and I became much more energetic and mentally alert. I am 78 years old and full of life. I love traveling, hiking, swimming, and playing my classical guitar. Life is for living - you will live better and enjoy life more if you stop eating animal food and adopt a whole food plant based (healthy vegan) diet.

I’m strongly considering studying to be a Doctor just so that I can try and do more and raise more awareness about this issue. No one seems to listen when I try to talk about this at work... however there are a few nurses that I have met that understand this and also want to encourage change but just don’t know what to do because no one seems to want to hear the truth. Persevere, we will cure and treat disease by a simple change of diet and lifestyle choices eventually!

Montsano is guilty of genetically modified seeds so why would you advocate for them? We have so few companies which are actually interested in healing and health, because they are centered around profits. We cannot trust these companies to provide healthy food for humans (or animals ) Doctors like Klapper,Esselstein,McDougall,Fuhrman,Griger and others who have not lost their ethics have given up surgery for a more rewarding career, actually helping people. People should not be treated like hogs,to be poked, prodded, slaughtered and butchered! There is a better way to health but we have to put the butchers out of business. Centuries of cheese have not served us well and 2eggs a day kills. How much proof do we need?

I told my Dr that I wanted my b12 checked because I've been plant based for the past 3 yrs. All she said was "that's good to know" (that I'm plant based). Nutrition is never a topic of discussion with her. Btw, my cholesterol was 125, with a family rife with hbp, mine has been consistently normal, my b12 was in the mid range of normal. I'm loving the way I eat. It works for me.

+IW Nunn I would take a B12 supplement anyway as the bodies natural reserves only last 2-4 years. Better still a B complex because of the synergistic relationships between all the B fits in so many bodily reactions at a molecular level.

BRAVO!! It has always baffled me how the discussion of nutrition is absent when talking about health and medicine in the U.S... Even now in the time of Coronavirus there is little mention of the importance of good nutrition to boost your immune system, which is our frontline of defense. I have lived in China, and spent long periods of time in Japan and India where nutrition is not only discussed with physicians but even on mainstream TV. On a Japanese TV program they discussed the health benefits of soba (buckwheat) noodles vs. Udon (flour) noodles, and how in winter one (soba) keeps you warmer longer than the other. Japanese of Okinawa have not only most of the worlds centarians, but they are disease free for 97% of their lives. They often attribute this too the vegetables they grow and eat themselves. In China, Traditional Chinese Medicine and sometimes mainstream culture has a lot to say about nutrition and who should eat what and when. In India, another country with a big food culture, Indians know both the nutritional and medicinal benefits of cooking with spices and have an ancient tradition of vegetarianism . When I visited an Ayurvedic doctor in India for my chronic migaines and joint issues, he spent two hours with me discussing my diet and unique circumstances of my body and health. Their traditional medicine prescribes a customized approach to nutrition, according to their gender, age, occupation, lifestyle etc.. Its a much smarter approach to nutrition than a one-size-diet-fits-all approach. Its so refreshing that Dr. Klaper is raising the red flag and alerting all too pay attention to nutrition!

When I asked THEM about a plant based diet, one doctor responded "You'd really want to live like that?" When I eat plant based, I'm symptom free on zero medications. The alternative would be steroids and plaquenil for life, which is known to cause eye sight problems after you take it for many years.

But I don't eat grains so I will never suffer Celiac disease and I don't consume any sugar or carbs including fruit so I'll never get type 2. I think I'm on the winning side. When it comes to sugar, type 2 is just the start, well almost, rotting teeth starts the ball. Then heart d, then fatty liver and kidney d, brain d like Parkinson's, dimentia, Alzheimer's, blindness, of course obesity and then you start to lose your toes, and feet then your legs and eventually, Oh yes, it kills you. Overall, in this sense it may be even better a source of protein, because the macros are shifted beyond what we may calculate😁 Now trying to eat them everyday, having fallen to some fruit boy indoctrination about a year ago...back on the sprouts, greens and beans since 6 months or so😂 Take care!

My wife and I became strict vegetarians roughly two years ago. We felt it was the healthiest diet for us. We were already in above average shape. We bicycled together, walked, and hiked on occasion. We were both close to our optimum body weights (within 5 pounds, perhaps). Slowly, as we followed our new vegetarian diet, supplimented with multi-vitamines and minerals, we both began to put on a few extra pounds. We tried to find time to exercise more often, but we found it difficult, as our reduced energy levels could not support it. Today, a couple of years later, we are both a good twenty pounds over-weight, and experiencing the worst health of our lives. So frustrating, as we eat and exercise better than most people we know. My conclusion is that there are many different types of people, and body types. Vegetarianism may very well be the best lifestyle for many of those people; but not all. I have a friend, who eats red meat everyday, and is thinner and more energetic than myself. His blood tests reveal great numbers, blood pressure is well below mine, and he could run circles around me. I feel that most people have the very best intentions, when they recommend going vegetarian, and often it works well for them. As for my wife and I, we are going back to eating lean meats with our meals. We are tired of being tired, and struggling to get our belts fastened. Eat what works best for your specific body type, based on the results you get.
