Definitely a defect in design/manufacturing. Anybody who has this model, has or has had broken hinges. We sent ours to Acer for repair already once. It lasted a couple of months!

How long did this take? How long do you thinknit would take to replace the somewhat damaged LCD and front bezel at the same time? I have a limited income and want to estimate the cost of repair based on the rate the local repair place charges. Any help estimating the time frame would help me find out if I can afford to repair it or not and would be be highly appreciated please and thank you.

I think i have the same exact problem. Just ordered the parts and will attempt the repair next week. I almost gave up on this laptop but thanks! I will add that I've had this laptop for over 2 years now and this issue only happened when I accidently pushed the screen farther down to reach something.

Hi did you also replace the case?

At 3:00, did you/he flip the laptop over with the screen just loosely sandwiched between the lid and body? How'd you make sure it didn't move around and break the wires? I'm about to attempt this, and this part makes me nervous.

Yes, just close the lid and remove the bottom panel. It will not move around.

Hey! I bought this laptop the acer nitro 5 (2018) and the screens broken , im getting new parts to fix it. In the meanwhile, since i cant game on it. Could you post a video trying to play fortnite on all low settings and see what fps it gets?

This happened to my nitro5, too. As a cheap workaround I just put superglue.

Same thing happened to me as well. But after replacing new frames it does not recognize closing lid. Any idea what sensor detects that event? What may have gone wrong while repairing?

Make sure you check your settings for "closing the lid." It may be set to, "do nothing."

bruh I have the same laptop, you were right about those hinges, I think mine has 2 broken hinges as both sides pop up everytime I open my laptop, I can't fix it since I don't have enough money to buy replacements at the moment, but for the mean time I just put duct tapes on both side to somehow close the gap when I open my laptop.

The duct tape should hold for a bit as long as its tight. If you have an extra monitor around, output to that using HDMI.

If it goes away if you press you finger on the screen then the screen is damaged. You'll have to replace it or try to ignore it.

Both of my hinges snapped. Laptop is unusable. Tried glue, tape, everything. Screen is destroyed. Gimme have to replace the whole chassis now.

Metallic laptops are more preferable to avoid this or does this happens in metallic laps too?

It can happen but because the lid is metal, its hard for housing holding the screw to become weak and brittle thus breaking. The long shaft on the repair piece can break on any laptop. It depends on how its made, thickness etc.

No, its not normal. Keep an eye on it. The strongest part of the lid is at the bottom corners.

I have had 3 laptops from Acer, 2 I got from a company I was working for, one I bought for myself. They all had TERRIBLE hinges which kept breaking every 5 or so months. I am never buying Acer again.

If you’re talking about the piece that’s connected to the display panel then I’m having the same issue. I tried super gluing it back together but the piece was still sticking out like a sore thumb no matter what i did, I just took it out since there was nothing I could do with it and now one of the corners of the screen is pushed in. I guess one thing you could do is replace the display panel with a new one which is relatively easier than replacing the hinge, just make sure to disconnect the battery again while doing so.

My nitro 5 came apart as well in the almost same fashion. I've never had a laptop that did this, absolute poor quality on acers end, and I will never purchase an acer again.

my laptop 2 years ago had this issue and i took it into my local repair shop to get it fixed. And it happened again on the same spot to the point where it damaged the top case so i could easily see inside. and i don't think they replaced the hinges at all because there is ZERO support bar on my left side needless to say im going to be doing my repairs myself that don't require soldering from here on out

Yea if i knew of this fault earlier i would've only opened the screen by the base of the screen.

I’m sure they could easily modify the compartment to do away with the SATA drive and use the space for a bigger battery. I personally think it’s a bad idea as you are left with M.2. Although much faster, many people can’t afford them in higher capacities. Having the SATA drive option allows you to have an affordable hard drive or SATA SSD.

Machine was purchased March 29th 2018. The hinges lasted until around June 2022. That’s pretty good imo with constant use.

Mine also same problem Plastic is of so much bad quality it keeps on breaking Never will buy Acer again

But the gaming laptop is portable **-Ack**

happened to my an515-42, it's shit a fucking vacuum dust receiver and a broken hinge on screen. Im glad I didn't spend another 60$ shit shell replacement and straight up just used epoxy to the hinges. more sturdy and less likely to fuck it up soon.

also the cuck screen is not even screwed and I had to use a strong rubber adhesive tape it back in (the screen slid off progressively under the chassis due to heat I guess but they should have know it coming).

Never buy Acer Products.

Yeah, depends on budget though. The machine in the video was purchased in the summer of 2018. Not too bad considering as many times as I have opened, shut, gamed etc.

Don't buy this laptop. My hinges broke after 2 month and subsequently damaged the screen. I sent it back on warranty and they repaired the hinges and replaced the screen. After this I sold the laptop at a loss. 1 year down the line I was walking around in curries pc world and saw one of these on display with a broken hinge. Very flimsy laptop don't buy.

It is a budget machine after all. The one in the video was purchased in March 2018. I’d say it’s done it’s job while still going. Most machines have their flaws and you get what you pay for. Good luck going forward.
