Absolute Beginner Chunky Knit Hat is a free pattern by Marly Bird. Learn how to do the alternative long tail cast on, the knit stitch, and the invisible seam...oh and let's not forget about the pom pom!
This is a really great beginner knit hat pattern. It uses chunky yarn so it works up quickly which means that you'll enjoy instant gratification. That always makes it more fun as you learn a new craft doesn't it?

    Hi I did it!! I know how to crochet but I wanted to learn to knit! I never thought I could but after your video! I knitted my first project!! (Yaay me!!)     I’m a crocheter , I don’t know how to knit 🧶 a stitch!     I made a hat yesterday and I thought I knew what I was doing to attach the Pom Pom but I got to tell you it was wonky on top! Thank goodness I watched your video and now I can fix it! Oh I'm going to make your hat too!

I'm so glad u gave me a pattern for garter stitch hat I'm still new to knitting and want a hat but I am not that great at purling just yet I can do it just not very well but ik I'll get there but it'll be nice to be able to get a hat and then have it all knit instead of having to switch back and forth to purl

    I used to make pom pom”s with beermats, have two beermats, cirkel in the middle cut out and works the same!

    Marly, the hat looks amazing. I'm just going to have to break my yarn diet and try out this hat. All your tutorials are very well done. I have learned so much from them. My question is, can this same pattern be used with worsted weight yarn also? I have a lot of worsted in my stash now because I inherited my sister's stash when she passed in May. I have so much yarn now I think I will have to put it in my will who gets it. Thank you and many blessings to you and your family. Rose .

    I love this project but I want it to match my chunky scarf which is a number 6 not a 7. How can I tell how many stitches to cast on for the super bulky number 6? Thank you. I thought I could do it by checking the gauge but I'm afraid I don't understand the gauge instructions.

    I was trying to count the number of stitches you had because it was a LOT so you can join them...how many for a large adult?

    Yes, but then you lose the ease of just doing knit stitch as if you are working in the round you must knit a round then purl a round to get garter stitch. And really, the seam is SUPER EASY!

    How many strands of worsted weight #4 can you use to achieve this bulky yarn? Chunky yarn is soo expensive

    I honestly don’t know. You would have to do gauge swatches to get the right size.

    I am a beginner. If I knit 1, pear 1 for the rim of the hat will the hat fold over better at the rim while wearing it, or will it not make a difference? Enjoyed your demonstration, thank you.

    I'm not sure I understand your question. But in an attempt to answer it, once you cast on the number of stitches you need, you will no longer use the tail. You will weave it in later.

    Lee Ann CrochetGottaLoveIt yes, if you decide to make it on circulars in the round, would would have to knit a row than purl a row. Much easier to just knit it flat :)

    Marly Bird - wouldn't you just pearl every row if using circulars in the round? I'm pretty new to knitting but don't like seams in my hats so I've been trying to convert flat patterns to circulars. I'm going to try this once I get that cute yarn!

    Marly how many castings for male hat? I did a 37 castings for a female and I will be stich in like u showed.

    You could do 2 or 4 more stitches, depending on how much bigger you want the hat. But I will tell you this size fits my husband so I don't think I would make it any bigger.

    Is it just me seeing things or did you use a different stitch when you joined the colors the first time? The first stitch didn't go the 'through the door, around...." ? then the following stitches went the usual knit way......
