Look how Matt Turner did his shift linkage sealing. He just took a rubber shift boot and clamped the top part of the boot to the shaft before the clevis. It looked like he used a shaft clamp off McMaster

Use an old car inner tube for the shifter boot. Cut a small hole in it then lay it in place, cut to size and screw to the floor. Instant rubber gasket

Just wanted to add : it's normal to have to run a tap back through threads that you weld near. It's not because of anything you did wrong.

That's what I reckon but I thought a universal steering rack boot because it would be about the same size as the firewall grommet. So he could just weld an inch long bit of pipe (big enough to fit around the grommet) to the plate and then cut the rack boot to size

If you weld a bit of pipe onto your shifter plate around the firewall grommet so it sits in the bottom of a cup, then use a steering rack boot and a hose clamp on each end to seal it, that could look pretty neat. And you can cut the boot to size

Use a CV boot and Velcro strap for your shift boot.

As a machinist of 45 years I must say sometimes you are your own worst enemy. ALWAYS, before you cut, weld, machine, or even paint something step back and wait a minute and get your ducks in a row. If it's hot or cold where you are working go inside and take a break. Then go back out and look at the design again. You'll be amazed at how much difference the plan may change. If it's near the end of the day take the rest of the day to figure it out. You'll save Sooo much time and money you won't believe it. Not to mention wear and tare on your nerves. As for the shift boot , go pick up a Cheap one at AutoZone. You will save a LOT of time, and time is the commodity you are in short supply of. Good luck, and be safe in the shop. Always have a plan before you turn on a machine. Guys without a plan lose fingers and hands. Seen it more than once.
