The novel Down and Out in Magic Kingdom, again has the same concept, was published in 2003. It's from the tv show The Orville, majority rules. He danced on a statue of a hero and it was recorded. Video was posted on an online master feed and it was downvoted by thousands of ppl when he was in the coffee shop. He gets arrested for harming the State and has to go on an apology tour after which you get neurologically readjusted if you get downvoted too much. The spaceship crew then manipulates the master feed with different endearing messages about him/his childhood/his weight, which get lots of upvotes and they manage to save him/escape this world. 😅😂

For those who dont want to watch it, John grinds a statue just goofing off, and it is uploaded to the 'Master Feed', which is one giant social media feed. To think people would be comfortable rating someone honestly in person without their identity hidden is where the show missed the mark. Black mirror had the technicals better, but this world building was more interesting. Too bad it seems like nobody can get it right... Such is life. 🔻

I mean, I agree that this wouldn’t work as a practice, if a culture on earth adopted it. But this is an alien planet, with an entirely different culture. Yes, I know it is unrealistic for aliens to basically just be humans. But TV shows often have limited budgets, and it’s a trope that exists in almost every piece of famous Sci-fi
