A Williams Formula 1 Documentary: How F1 Champions Became Backmarkers
Спорт
The Williams Formula 1 story is one I've worked on for months to explain how major F1 champions fell and where exactly was the turning point. Let's explore the half century history of Williams F1. A team once synonymous with champions. Subscribe for more F1 Stories: bit.ly/2T3TGbK
I have wanted to do this video for years. To thank you for all your support, I wanted to give back to you in a video I poured a lot into. Not just time. My passion, energy, and creativity. The objective is to help people see Williams were at one time the top of the food chain. And their behavior today, while it may seem stubborn, it makes sense when you see what they had to go through to get here, especially Frank Williams.

Such real view. That Monza 2003 GP and the races that followed were some real farces, because of the FIA (Ferrari Insurance Agency) intervention in disqualifying the Michelin tires and forcing the French manufacturer build the new tires in record times. And all of that just because the McLaren 2002b and Williams FW25 were a concrete threat to win the title that year.
@nathanturner5186
Жыл бұрын
Late reply but, the FIA didn’t change the tyre rules, Michelin were found to be breaking the existing rules and actually avoided punishment some how. They were lucky not to have had their results disqualified back to 2001. So yes they had to change their tyres, because they were breaking the rules with the ones they’d supplied until then that season and got found out…

Post-quarantine, a review: New ownership, and a new perspective on how Williams have decided to operate in the future. Taking the hydraulics and gearbox (on top of the engine) from Mercedes shows that Williams have decided to take a different direction, as CY mentioned they may need to in order to improve in the future. And as we can see, with 4 points-scoring finishes, a podium and 2 top-3 qualifying positions in the last 5 races show that maybe they are on their way back. Outstanding video my friend, keep it up.

48 minutes packed with information! Took me at an hour to watch! About being a constructor: I think Williams forgot to ask themselves at every decision: ‘How much will this contribute to getting points?’. Developing your own gearbox is very romantic but if all teams use carbon fibre and you’re the only one that’s not and your costs are several times higher than the one you can purchase from Mercedes, then you clearly aren’t focussed to winning but focussed on engineering. The same goes for the pedal box. You don’t win races with a pedal box, so just buy one and spend you scarce resources on aero and suspension.

Excellent work! Some thoughts: I remember an interview of Gordon Murray I saw somewhere, he was talking about how things have changed compared to his time at F1 as a Designer at McLaren and the tight-knit committees of "two" or "one" making the decisions and how impossible it is to run a team nowadays - Part of it was old-timer dismissiveness (I think, but hey, the guy's brilliant) but a good chunk of it holds true I believe, especially now - I can't imagine how difficult it must be to turn a team around, especially when morale is down. One more thought, that I think, also holds weight: A convergence of things happening! People "happening", luck and timing - We live in an age that the thought of success, lies exclusively in the notion of carefully executed steps, tight schedules and unrelenting principles of discipline, ad-nauseam buzz words and bar charts - It's the "gift" that the MBA's of the so-called 'business world' used to infect every single aspect of human endeavour, by carefully and gradually removing the sheer luck, pathos,(or passion if you like) perseverance against all odds and sentimentality that rightfully accompanies any difficult effort because without it you cannot and will not win - A state that then, allowed a Ross Brawn to be given a chance without having a degree, a state that now does NOT allow for such 'foolishness' - Its absence playing a major role in the Williams Team's demise as it has in other teams the past 20 or so years. If such parallels would be allowed, SpaceX would not have existed had it not allowed for a culture of 'letting things happen' a 'letting people exist more freely' ethos and the ingenuity that comes out of it - But hey, what do I know, I just like stories and machinery. -Rant complete.

Great video done man! Thank you for your work! It’s really amazing!
You did SO well with this. Williams were the team which got me into F1 back in 87 (Mansell) and it's sad to see where they are now. There is something very noble about what they are doing and I hope they get back. I genuinely like Claire Williams and would love her to get success. Thanks for this excellent video.
For those of us who are not intimately involved in the Williams F1 history this is a spectacularly researched and produced video. I wonder if Frank or Clair Williams will make a comment filling in any of the holes or at a minimum to give you a "thank you" for diving into the story and give us this valuable content for the cost of a "like" and a "Subscribe". Thank you Yankee!

Thanks so much for your content it has well and truly re-ignited my love for F1
Thank you, CYF1, for your well thought out and insightful analysis of Williams F1 past and present. I appreciate your honesty because I share the belief that one of the last of the great independent F1 constructors have earned our respect because they will never stop trying. Bruce McLaren and Frank Williams had a dream of competing with the world's best and they've done that.

Finally finished this and was well worth it! Brilliant production and a great detailed history of one of F1's greatest teams. I hope we haven't seen the last of their success days with them fading away into a footnote in F1 history, but in the current climate certainly uncertain times!

Williams are survivors. Competing In The highest ranking open wheel race league in the world, maybe not the best adjective to be associated with. But as long as there’s a pulse, they’ve got a shot. It’s gotten so low that’s all you can hope for is to ride it out. I feel for the factory and extended team furloughed. Thanks for your support guys!
Love your clips - this is basically a documentary on the subject! If this was on old timey TV - put in 3mins of ad's every 12mins, and you've got the better part of an HOUR long program! Ain't the future awesome? Back in the 80's/90's, you'd be LUCKY to get this kind of information in the fine print of an F1 specialist magazine. FABULOUS work dude - keep it up! I've just subscribed in the past few days and am currently binge watching your stuff. LOVING IT! Cheers!!

Another great video! I appreciate all the research and effort you put in. I think your content is top quality. As a youngster in the mid 1990’s, Williams was the only team for me. I really enjoyed the rivalry between Hill’s Williams and Schumacher’s Benetton.

The 2020 season is now four races underway and Williams seems to have improved somewhat (even if it's a flattered picture because Alfa Romeo and Haas have fallen back). There's a good chance at least George Russell will score a point this year. I'm certainly rooting for them!

CrankyYankeeF1 I think that a season review video, particularly on 2008, would be really good as it was a close and (quite) controversial season. Even though me and the majority of f1 fans saw/know what happens in this season, it would be cool to see it analysed in a slightly more cut down, race by race way. Idk I just think the season review videos are really good and it would be cool to see your opinions on the controversy (mainly talking about Spa here) I think 2008 is a good representation of Ferrari and it’s ‘special’ relationship with the FIA so it would be an eye opener to people who maybe don’t know why there is a general feeling of fia bias towards Ferrari. It would be interesting for sure and your really good editing skills would definitely make it as if we were rewatching the season again! Thanks
Really enjoyed that. Having a lot of hip problems and that took my mind off the pain. My 2 favourite teams were Williams and McLaren, still are I guess. McLaren have started to claw their way back but I think the only thing that can save Williams will be the rule change (which I think has been moved to '22 now). But great video, very well constructed and presented. Thanks for the hard work.

mclaren have a HUGE influx of saudi money too they can tap. not to mention sellling road cars. I believe that's going to be stroll's play too. he just quietly adjusted his deal with aston like a savage. I suppose you don't become a billionaire just smiling. and it's looking like it might move back to '23 on technical but financial will stay in place. that's LITERALLY impossible. not sure how they expect teams to live. I'm sorry about your pain - that can't be awesome. I'll respond and give you something to research like this whenever I can of course. I'll be picking up videos too. more to come!

@@oxcart4172 Lol. To be honest I'm not sure if it's more or less cost effective. We pay more in tax than you guys do but our health care system is just underfunded. Either way thanks for the message. I've lived with it for a long time now so kind of used to it. Broke and dislocated it at 18, was ok until mid 30's then started having problems. Had a few operations already but nothing's worked so I'm wondering if the problem is what the consultant says it is hence wanting a CT scan. Ok, lol, that's enough! You don't want to hear my medical history in a F1 chat! Really missing the racing this year, was expecting a really good season. Even though they will probably just run this year's cars next year it means the well off teams can do more development work which the little teams just can't afford to do. So instead of seeing a closing up, which I expected this year, the gap might just get bigger. But who knows really. Nothing is certain until we get this virus under control.

They had a few chances to be a manufacturer works eg BMW but turned it down hence why they lost them. When they lost their designers, they lost their edge. I’m not sure why they let it happen maybe out of loyalty for head but similar to Red Bull today, newey isn’t the technical director. They could have done and likely made him happy. Just guessing obviously but they did have a shot just a shame they didn’t take their chances when they had them

yeah it's def up there. in this video you'll see ferrari had a great car of course but they were fighting a chassis on it's knees at that point. and a 21 year old kimi gave schumi a run for his life those seasons. williams won in an era with no restrictions and the best drivers in the world fighting engines capable of double what can be done today. made for a lot more variation and retirements yes but just more upside. I'm figuring out now how to do that video actually haha
