I really do think schumacher would have won in 1999 if he didn't brake his leg. Irvine isn't a bad driver but if he could come that close theres no question for me that Michael would have taken it... However, i still believe Mika Häkkinen was the quickest driver that year. That Ferrari car was faster than the Mclaren and Mika still beat Irvine while having LOADS more retirements than him. Had Schumacher had the same amount of retirements as Mika, even if he was there the whole season i don't see Schumacher beating Häkkinen. But that Ferrari car was also more reliable and that's why i think Schumacher would have taken the title.

Mika just casually out-qualifying the greatest one-lapper of all time in his debut.

@@nassaubahamas5494 You do realise that Massa wasn't as good of a driver after his accident? He went from being great driver to being just a good one He never reached his peak Prime Massa is leagues above Bottas and easily on par with a lot of phenomenal drivers

@@boltmix7294 Kimi easily outdrove Bottas in 2018, and even in 2017 although Bottas beat him in the championship by quite a mile. Felipe was one of the best drivers in his younger years, look at 2006. Of course I'd say he wasn't on the same tier as Hamilton or Kimi in 2007 and 2008. If Kimi had held it together he could've won the championship twice.

@@nassaubahamas5494 WTF1 made a video explaining why these kind of comparisons are pointless. Rosberg also scored twice as many points as Schumacher in 2010, while he was beaten by Hamilton in 2014 and 2015, who was beaten by Button in 2011, who was beaten by Ralf Schumacher in 2000. Does that mean Ralf Schumacher was twice as good as Michael Schumacher?

Michael Schumacher is a absolute legend especially his time representing the Scuderia. But Mika Hakkinen in his own rights is a legend. He was consistent and always drove on the edge. Not to forget he is an absolute gentleman. One of my favorite rivalries right here. Another great video!

yeah was an all around feel good video even with MSC criticism. I saved their epic 2000 battle for it's own. just so show how much michael improved but even still, Mika was winning through 3/4 of the season! I'll get feedback and hopefully part will be even better :)

@@TheKestevon well I think in 2001 with all the reliability balls up he just realized this whole thing doesn't affect him so much anymore so he decided in Monte Carlo I think it was to retire at the end of the season. I would've loved to see him go for another few years but he did what he thought would be right to do

I put along with Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso as the only guys who could really match Schumacher, and of course he's the one who probably had the most memorable relationship with Schumacher.

The late 90s in all was a great time to be an F1 fan. No drivers or teams dominated, championship battles came down to the last race, V10 engines, tire wars, even midpack teams like Jordan and Stewart won races and Murray Walker was still on the mic.

Tbf the 2010s haven’t all been bad, 2010-2014 were seasons where despite Red bull winning every single one it often came close and other teams were able to compete for race wins consistently(until the tire regulation changes let Vettel get the longest win spree in F1 history)

Mika and Micheal. Grew up watching this, their rivalry is what made me love f1.

Not even the greatest pass made on Schumacher, let alone one of the greatest ever. Villeneuve on Schumacher - Estoril 1996. Unbelievable. Makes the Spa 2000 pass look like a video game.

He was UNREAL in one lap. I put him up there with Ayrton. Even more, he was nearly untouchable off the line. What I forgot was how absurdly aggressive everyone off the line was back then. Those moves were not only legal but expected. Def pushed what I understood about him here - glad you liked those parts!

Ah, that took me back. I remember feeling every emotion Mika went through during those two years. Btw, I reckon that DC is one of the most underrated drivers around. He's a lot like Sir Stirling Moss - enough of a gentleman to back his team mate up without question - with a touch of Sir Jackie Stewart. Also a gent but more of a terrier. DC was never afraid to bite back if he felt it necessary, including towards his team and boss. He pulled off some cracking drives in his time. Rock on part 2!

True, Coulthard was a really strong driver, a lot of drivers in the schumacher Era just didn't win the championship they deserved because they were overshadowed by schumacher and also häkkinen

DC had the best car for 4 seasons (95, 98-2000). Had plenty of chances, he simply wasn't strong enough often enough. Won 1 race in '98 and 2 in '99. Says it all. Comparing him to Stirling Moss is embarrassing 🤦‍♂️

Thank you for this vid. I started to really follow Formula 1 during this rivalry. It is the F1 rivalry I most identify with and it often gets overlooked.

These “shorter” ones are sooooo much more manageable and can easily do them in 3-4 days vs the more challenging constructs which takes as long to just write let alone edit. Keep me in the loop Saturday and you can tell me if quicker, but still fairly deep content is more attractive right now with no racing

I loved this rivarly as a kid. We watched every GP with my dad screaming for Häkkinen like crazy while cursing Schumacher 😂

Wow great content, subscribed! I grew up a Schumi fan and Mika clearly was his toughest and most consistent opponent. Michael had his battles with Kimi, Montoya, Alonso etc. but the rivalry with Mika was something else. Schumacher consideres him to be the greatest rival of his entire career.

Michael Schumacher my racing Hero since I was 6 years old, I'm now 32 in September 2020 LOL. Man time flys. I was doing his famous fist-pump every time you showed him on-screen LOL. I absolutely loved this rivalry. Mika is another driver a loved as a child. Michael Vs Mika it was the only time I didn't get annoyed when Michael was beaten in a race. Two legends that gave me tones of F1 joy in the '90s and '00s. Great video man.

There's no other channel that I have notification turned on for, and watch the videos as soon as possible! Great job, as always :)

Great content! There are many great Rivalries you can work on next. Senna vs Prost 1988-1993, Hamilton vs Ferrari 2007-2008, Alonso vs Vettel 2010&2012, Hamilton vs Vettel 2017-2018(even tho it was pretty one sided), Alonso vs MSC 2006, Alonso vs Honda(hehe) and the list goes on. Bravo Cranky!

Yeah sorry man the more I play back for the 100th time , the more I see places to work on narration. It’s so unnatural for me to slow down but I’m working on it. Yooo Cranky. We need a video like this but for the 2008 season. Last week I was explaining to my gf why the 08 season was such a roller-coaster and as I was looking up the results of that year I was imagining in my head how you'd tell the story, how LH and FM made mistakes all year long while also delivering memorable drives, how Alonso's leave from McLaren made Lewis the absolute no. 1, the heat inside Ferrari, the controversies of strategies and how it all came down to THAT final lap.

I just found your channel great content here! Just want to say regarding this video I do agree that Mika deserved the title in 99 and Eddie was unlucky due to the team messing up his pit stop in the European GP, I strongly believe that if Schumacher hadn't broken his leg at the British GP I think the title race would again go down to the wire in Suzuka. You got to remember that in 98 Ferrari's car wasn't that bad compared to the previous car in 97 (F310B) the problem they had was Ferrari were using Goodyears at the time and although it was the smart choice to stay with Goodyears considering Goodyears were the main tire company to supply teams for decades and Bridgestones entered the year before in 97 and fewer teams went to race with them, Bridgestone tires were performing so much better to the narrower shaped cars that the FIA have introduced for that season. So Ferrari struggled to keep up with the Mclaren's on more technical circuits like the Cataluyna track, that being said if Ferrari went with the Bridgestone for 98 instead of 99 the title race, might have ended differently. So my point is that exclude Schumacher's terrible accident that Ferrari the F399 is basically an evolved version of the F300 in 98 but with Bridgestone tires, I seriously think Schumacher could have won that years title.

Some say that Michael let Hakkinen win at Suzuka in 1999 because he didn’t want Eddie Irvine to win the championship 😂 but anyway very good video, and Mika was incredible in the late 1990s, underrated driver

When you think about it looks like Schumacher was under massive pressure post 1997 to deliver for Ferrari, which may have led to some of his lapses in Spa / Suzuka 1998.

Since I only started watching F1 in 2017, this is very interesting learning about past seasons and rivalries, makes me want to do more research and watch some older races, like I got F1 tv and with no live racing on I've watched the 2010 and 2011 seasons and I'm now on the 2012 season, and I'm only 3 races in and it's already such an amazing season

I don't agree that mika would win if michael was still there for all season in 1999 but it's okay to have different opinions. Very nice video, we wait for part 2!! :D

@@CYMotorsport As far as I remember the 1999 season after MSC was out on injury me and my friends got the feeling, and just like someone said it back then, that nobody wanted to win that title (bar Eddie). Just a feeling but we really thought that watching the rest of the season. 2000 was great though. Can't wait for your recap.

Great content as always. However, i would refute the claim that Irvine had a great season. It was impressive to see him win on 4 occasions, but the closes he was to winning on merit that year was Austria, and even then the two McLarens crashed on lap one. Hakkinen later demonstrated incredible pace to fight back to P3. Hindsight suggests he could have won that race at a canter. Irvine won in Australia largely due to a race of incredible attrition. In Germany, stand in teammate Salo relinquished a lead to him after Mika retired from a comfortable P1 after a high speed rear tyre failure. Finally, in Malaysia, Schumacher put the car on pole by a second in his comeback (clearly a statement in isolation) and then moved aside for Irvine to take victory. The only thing impressive about Irvine’s 4 victories was the fact he’d actually done something not many expected he could do which was to win through a season. The pressure Mika was feeling was internal that year, McLaren was lightning quick but often let him down rather Irvine rising to an occasion.

I should point out that 1) Mika is probably my all time favourite driver so there may be bias involved. But also 2) Irvine’s hometown of Conlig is a leisurely 20 minute walk from my house! It would have been nice to have a hometown hero but it would not have been entirely earned in my opinion.

Haha either way you seem open regardless so I’m always okay with bias as long as there’s consideration. You seem highly thoughtful and calculated. I genuinely encourage you to bake in the amount of times Irvine played defense for Michael in98. If I quote it I genuinely think you’d have a hard time believing me. But then some of your micro examples have holes. Firstly, attrition doesn’t automatically mean “luck” per say. Mechanical failure is apart of racing. Being there to take advantage is really all you can take. But you can’t penalize a driver for everyone else having failure. Also, Australia for example. Michael made a mistake. He beat him on merit 100%. In fact, Mika stalled too directly in front of Michael haha. I included two separate examples of video footage of Irvine letting Michael through just to cover off this objection. I do get where you’re coming from but it’s confirmation bias to a degree. You’re doing the work arguing for Michael but not the same points in the counter. I hope you don’t take this as me being confrontational. As You can likely tell from my content, I get hyper invested and it comes out like this haha. But I’m 100% open to all arguments, of course. But the data cuts against Michael crucially if giving position away is being baked into the cake. Michael had 4 wins in 2000 where a McLaren driver didn’t finish. CrankyYankeeF1 I would agree with you that attrition is more than just luck, and i would also agree with you that Irvine WAS in the right place and performed admirably enough to be the beneficiary of the issues to other drivers in that race. Looking back, Irvine rightfully won and deserved his 1999 Australia victory for these reasons. I think the over-arching point i’m making is that, had Irvine won that title, it may not be looked back upon by fans as a... “deserved”(? - is the the right word without sounding harsh) victory. I’m all tor the argument that if the title is won, then it’s won plain and simple and said driver earned it, but in formula 1 some drivers earn them more than others and had Irvine been WDC in ‘99 it’s probably not guaranteed people would remember it fondly. I should say, i’m very glad you point out the opposite to most journalists in this video. Many are quick to say Schumacher would have won the championship that year easily, with regards to the fact the ferrari was more reliable and “the quickest car on average” that year, but it was a relief o hear you mention Hakkinen’s fantastic early summer form that year and the momentum he had at the point of MSC’s accident - props! Eagerly awaiting Episode 2. Like i said your content is spectacular, and i promise i wont engage you in another huge debate next time around! All the best!

what Hakkinen did is something that ww would have never expected it at that moment, he was just insanely good, but it was a shame that in 1999 he fought the title with Irvine instead of Schumacher, even tho props to Irvine since it was a very very close finale

Sidenote here: Häkkinen wasn't relagated because of Andretti, but because of Senna. See, when Senna failed to get that Williams drive thanks to Alain Prost, he made Ron Dennis wait...and wait...and wait until Senna finally made up his mind. But there was a catch - since he was unconvinced by the MP4/8 powered by an inferior Ford Cosworth engine, the deal was on race-by-race basis, meaning that he can walk out whenever he wanted. But after two wins in Interlagos and Donnington (two rain soaked races mind you) Senna remained with McLaren for the remainder of the season and Mika got his contractual drive only after Andretti was shown the door.

I haven't watched F1 that much after Mika and Michael retired. It's just not the same. These two guys are the last glorious F1 for me.

The fact that the title race was so close means that so many things little and large could alter the winner like: - Irvines horrendous pit stop at the European GP - Frentzen braking down on the last lap in Brazil and still being classified as third - Badoer braking down at the Nürburgring - Hakkinen not being punished for a jump start in Belgium The 1999 season is the most underrated season in F1 history. It is not as good as the 2008, 2012, 1982, 2010 or the 1997 season but it is up there.

Schumacher and Hakkinen's rivalry was the last era in which F1 was still the real deal. Everything that followed - traction control from 2001, which made the cars basically point and floor; the dominance of sterile, obscenely wide Tilke circuits; Suzuka and Spa becoming shadows of their former supreme selves, what with the 130R being altered into oblivion and the infamous Bus Stop Chicane being taken out; F1 cars sounding like vacuum cleaners; the abomination that is DSR; the sport basically being taken over by teenagers - all of this killed my love for the sport. Now I get my kicks watching the WRC, which since 2017 with the rule changes to the cars, has been awesome.

I'm a Hakkinen die-hard, so although the 1998 and '99 seasons are supposed to represent the apotheosis for me, I actually prefer the 2000 season, despite the fact that Hakkinen lost the Championship to Schumacher. That 2000 season is just legendary for the amount of close fights those two had. The Suzuka qualifying session of that year might be my personal peak from watching F1 live; I couldn't believe how close they were, exchanging 100s and even 1000s of seconds between them, and how hard they pushed each other. It might be the greatest qualifying session of all time. Looking forward to your video.

Mika was one of the reasons I support McLaren. The first McLaren champ I was old enough to remember. Something about the way Finns drive man.

Grant Wolfkill did an article called “the race of my life” (or something similar) where he recalls that race, which I have a copy of somewhere, but am struggling to find online. My father passed on to me that the Ferrari that was 3rd (if memory serves) finished with more fuel than was put in the car at the last pit stop. Had this pit stop not happened, the Ferrari would have won.

The XKSS has an interesting story. There was a run of 25, which got halfway through before the factory burned down, ending the run and destroying some of the specs. The run was finished this century. The story is on 4od to watch. The XKSS was the road going version of the D-type. Steve McQueen sold his XKSS in the 70’s for over $1M. Rumour has it my grandfather’s (he never owned the car) sold within the last 5 years for $13M, though this is unverified.

Great video. Could maybe do a bit more even, with the key dramatic beats (with help from music, footage, storytelling). But to be honest, the factual tone here is great and fits the topic perfectly. No real need to overly dramatise it, but just a thought. A few things about Mika - I feel people ignore the psychology of high performance sports when they state that Schumi would have easily taken '99 were it not for his injury. The impact for Hakkinen of Michael being out of the picture was surely huge and would affect the rest of his season massively, whether he wanted it or not. He was (expected) to simply bring it home at that point, and it is often a much harder position to be in when it comes to these sorts of levels of competition. It is an unavoidable change in the subconcious and is well researched. Then there are a hundred other variables in play too; who knows if DC would have been there to collide with Mika in Austria, for example. It is entirely impossible to predict what would have happened and is purely emotion-based guessing if attempted. It certainly looked close, and it was a shame from a pure rivalry point of view, but that's about it for what we can say for certain. Another thing worth mentioning when talking about Hakkinen is his massive crash in Adelaide '95. He nearly died and was never quite the same after, in my opinion both in good and bad. He probably became a bit more cautious and consistent, but I feel he never quite got over the dangers of racing side of it. He has openly stated that is why he retired so early as well. You could really see it in 2001, after having one of his best years in 2000 yet just losing out (and having defended his championship), he was emotionally entirely done. That is not common for drivers, certainly not at that age, and it goes a long way of showing how much he had to deal with having had the accident earlier on. It's worth considering, then, how much of an immense achievement it was for him to rise back up to that level and win those championships against one of the all time greats. Personally, these two are the top of the F1 history, along with Senna, Clark, Prost, Fangio, etc.

Went back and forth a fair bit on music. It’s actually my favorite part of videos for me haha but I thank my provider for their artistic library solely. But big believer in mood. You nailed it with the tone. Next one will have more inflections bc it’s going to be clearly a MSC vantage point story. As for the rest, nothing to add bc it’s on the money. The best brought out the best. They both knew that and it’s why I think Michael loved when Mika was on form. Their moment especially after spa when he first calls him “the Michael” will forever stick with me. Also his 95 wreck was absurdly instrumental in his career. I didn’t feel I could do it justice and considering I found no place for it in this overall condensed narrative, I just left it. But commenting on the why bc you are on the nose and should people read this exchange hopefully it force a double click to understand even more what made Mika genuinely so special. I just couldn’t bear showing his bloody face. Similar to massa’s 2009. I avoided it at all costs. Crazy how they get back in the cockpit despite being on such a scary end of it going wrong

Mika is one helluva roll model. Class act all around.

Schumi and Häkkinen was the best rivalry in F1 history imho. German-Finnish Friendship forever.

I grew up with this rivalry. I will cherrish these moments till the end. "Because obviously he would not have give me the space" *looks at Schumi* "Right?" "Yeah" Those two were the best, nobody can touch them. Still waiting for that sabbatical to end.

Michael was karting against Mika in 1984 also.

The most succesful finn in f1, mika hakkinen, and listen to his podcast it was quite an insight of what he is going through and his mentality

Mika was one of the great front-runners of all time. In a strong car, on pole, full of confidence, he was pretty much invincible. When things weren't going his way he could be a bit streaky.

Mika and Kimi singlehandedly cultivated a positive view on Finns and Finland that still holds up to this day. If you want to win, go with the Finn!

Would love a vid on DC's career, believe he had a few wins before Mika so would be interesting to see why he left Williams to play second fiddle to Mika.. Would he have won a championship if he'd stayed at williams?

Great video, agree on all points but disagree on one thing , the Ferrari was more developed as the season went on, Irvine and Salo both done a fantastic job while Hakkinen cracked under pressure (think of Monza) when Schumacher returned he took a commanding pole position by almost a second , I believe without a broken leg Schumacher would of won the 1999 championship.

If Michael went to Williams, Mclaren and just forgot about Ferrari, we may have just had Prost like 1993 seasons, but Michael going to a broken Ferrari team and having to build it up, that was the best thing to happen to F1 and especially since Senna's death took a challenge away from Michael, Michael needed to keep proving himself and we got some of his best performances. Mika wasn't to consistent though when he wasn't in a title winning car, he would lose interest when going for less points.

If someone asks me (it's not the case, but), Schumacher didn't want to help Irvine to win '99. I remember those days. Even Ferrari didn't want Irvine to win the championship. They trew him anyway after that year.
