You try telling an F1 driver to box when HE feels nothing wrong with the car and he's in front !!! He asked for confirmation they were asking him in because HE thought his car was driveable like it was.

Team33 I agree that LeClerc is not to blame. His team should have ordered him to come in because his car posed a danger to others as the FIA had indicated to Ferrari. Imo Ferrari should have had a severe punishment. I don’t know what the regulation allow for as punishments though.

Leclerc probably couldn't see the extent of the damage at all. The drivers cannot see the front wing and hence it is wrong to assume he could see the sparks. It was very bright, so the light generated from the sparks doesn't make them any more visible. And it's not exactly right to assume he could hear them either. When you're wearing ear plugs, they are designed to filter out especially the louder sounds. But they will inevitably muffle out the less loud sounds too. I'm not sure how much his ear plugs silence the sounds, but if it's at least 30dB, it's safe to assume hearing the front wing brush the ground is not a 100% probability, especially if you also have to focus on driving. But I think you're absolutely right, he should've been told the damage was serious ahead of time. He knew there was damage, but the only thing he knew was that the car did not feel that bad. Also, Leclerc wanting to continue is not him not being intelligent enough. It's him not being experienced enough. He can't assess the gravity of the situation, because he doesn't have the experience for it. Until the mirror started to wobble, Leclerc knew he had damage, but had absolutely no idea how serious it was, only thought it was not too serious, because the car did not feel that bad. If you have a slight drag into the left, that really is not too bad. Not sure what he thought once the mirror started to wobble though. But once again. I'd say he's not stupid, he's just inexperienced. That's why he has the pit wall to back him up though. He's not innocent, that could've been a brutal incident. But yeah... I'm much more worried about what the pit wall was doing than what he was doing, because even if serious, it was still a rookie mistake. What the pit wall did was the highest endangerment.

Richard Urbanec thank you for that very thoughtful comment. At first I thought you were disagreeing but I think as you rationalized that out loud, more or less, it’s the exact route I took. I use those visual cues less as absolute fact he can see but more supplemental to the aero imbalance. I agree with your assessment that might have lead him to feel the car was fine. It’s actually why I made the video. In a lot of ways I have serious issues with the way his driving style shifted after Austria but he’s a future champion and how I feel about that is irrelevant to how I think all champions drive. You don’t win titles moving aside. But he was very unfairly targeted in this aftermath. I don’t care who it is, it’s difficult to really go after a driver given what we know here. I did not think that’s where I’d end up after making this video haha but I can’t believe a garage would do this to their own driver. And no one seemed to care. It wasn’t until this week this video was getting punished by the KZread algorithm as much of contrarian content does. So I’m glad I’m getting more thoughts and input on this you guys have so much to add it’s insane how untapped this all is. Thank you for taking the time to share that

I’ve had arguments with people who will repeatedly say “Ferrari didn’t tell him to stay out or “well they apologized atleast.” Nah. The opposite. I have the actual footage haha. But ya I feel like I little kid who just wrote a school essay about my angst learning Father Christmas is not real.

From the start I understood why Leclerc wouldnt come in right away. Youre in a twisty, pretty technical track, with compromised aero, fighting hard and actually maintaining, adrenaline is sky high, youre fking jacked, youre RACING, all your instinct is telling you NOT to stop. Shit, just racing in F1 games, if I get damage, I will do everything to convince myself it’s okay. No one wants to ruin a race with a lap 2 pit. Especiallt getting told literally at the last corner, 2 seconds away from passing the pit lane.

I'm really glad I found this video, for a start it's very coherent and unbiased. The facts are the facts but I would also love to hear in full your opinion. When this first happened I initially blamed Leclerc and thought it was really irresponsible and had completely forgotten about it in days. But this video really highlighted to me just the severity of the situation and how evidence might suggest that Leclerc wasnt actually the one at fault. He wasnt innocent, but Ferrari are 100% at fault for risking the drivers, fans, and marshalls and they should be held accountable. Fantastic video, thank you

I will sometimes share my opinions off this channel but I have to force myself not to get invested in anyone. I cover the season from testing to Abu Dhabi it’s crazy how much people tune out when they know you are biased. BUT that said, I have a strong bias for very literal regulation following. To a fault haha everyone hates it. I had a hard time liking Leclerc as a driver at first. But this was one of my early videos here. If you pay attention closely, you can actually hear me sympathize more and more with him. This video took a week so I had to do it in bits before I got really good at them. I too thought he was being a prick. But that was how it was covered. This video was pulled down almost immediately without explanation by an unknown party. so I know I was on to something. I did change some things but it’s back up but the momentum was stolen. Once I realized Ferrari hung him out to dry and then didn’t protect him from the media onslaught, I really double clicked and found only 2 sources with the full, unedited audio. Yeah he deserved a penalty. But he couldn’t have known. Then the whole stuff with the FIA, I couldn’t handle it haha. This video still to this day messes with me. It’s so overt. They never even corrected his penalty. Likely bc there is no way to “correct it” and get what they were clearly after. But it’s not all bed. It lead to one of the videos I’m most proud of - the downfall of Ferrari video. Thank you for your feedback! It really has helped me continue to improve this content with each video I go

Aside from “messing up the two-stop strategy”, Ferrari ultimately stayed out because of two reasons. Firstly, they were trying to wait for a VSC/SC. That would’ve brought them back in the window for a two-stop and minimized the loss of time. They were already far enough ahead that under SC conditions, Leclerc would’ve come out still in the points and battled his way to the front through the alternate strategy. The SC should’ve been called out ultimately because of the copious amounts of carbon all over the track, but I believe Masi didn’t want to help Ferrari anymore. Secondly, they didn’t want to box because somehow, Leclerc on technically his third lap, was setting PB’s. In fact, through the first and second sectors, he was faster than Bottas who was leading at that point, which begs the question of why Ferrari is more effective without their front wing end-plates? That’s kind of sad lol. Nevertheless, the overt action of staying out was both on Ferrari and Leclerc equally. Both were hoping for a SC which would’ve almost entirely erased having to pit for a front wing and tires, coupled with the fact that somehow that car was quicker without the end-plate. Great job on the video as always though. I only recently stumbled into your content and it’s pretty remarkable. If I were to start a channel, this would be a great model to run off of. Keep up the great work!

Fascinating, blatantly racist implies that it is obvious that it’s racist. It more subverts a stereotype. Which in essence kinda promotes the general meaning and definition of racism. So in that sense it’s not wrong, however it’s not entirely right because blatantly is subjective, which is why the other kinda insulting term snowflake comes out. The point racism vs countryism aka (nationalism and ethnic discrimination) is also true. Whether it’s used in the right context I’m not sure. However as much as I don’t like to interfere in muddied waters everyone is probably wrong, including me for various reasons of bias and ideology. However I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of distinction and ideas here. However whether such types of quotes should be enjoyed, I’m not to sure. Much to complicated for me to justify one way or another.

I feel horrible for Leclerc, while I definitely think he was partly at fault, I can completely understand why he did what he did. I come from a background of NASCAR, and recently there has been controversy about younger drivers at the tracks Daytona and Talladega. These two tracks encourage a type of racing called pack racing (basically good chunks of the field being extremely close together going 2-4 wide) so it is a very high-risk/high-reward type of racing. A good chunk of the time you'll see younger driver making the crazy and bold moves that sometimes end up causing a big crash. And I feel like a similar thing happened to Leclerc. He was trying to be the hero, by taking a large risk (driving a damaged car) he was hoping to get an award. BUT just like how a spotter can tell a young NASCAR driver they are clear when they are infact aren't, the Ferrari team could've told them the extent of the damage, yet they didn't.

To me, it’s equally as bad if it was to favor Leclerc and protect his strategy but regardless they cared 0% the risk and damage they did. I just think I’m missing something why it was swept under the rug Ferrari probably paid that fine that same day out of pocket cash

@@CYMotorsport It couldn't be to favor LeClerc because half his front wing was gone so the car would behave terrible from that moment on and destroy the tyres. And again there might be the hope that when LeClerc's mirror finally let go, it would hit Hamilton's car again, causing even more damage. And as the teams can hear other teams board radio communication, they knew Hamilton was backing off, losing more and more ground to Vettel as long as LeClerc stayed in front of him. It's been swept under the rug because Ferrari always threatens the FIA/F1 they will quit F1 if they feel they are being treated "unjustly" even if it's obvious the FIA decision was fully justified. Ferrari simply rolled it's muscles to show the FIA who's boss and who's not. The puny fine proved Ferrari's point.

16:56 I dont see a contradiction there. I remember once (I think its was ferrari lol with massa) where the front wing was visibly damaged, no sparks, and the driver was suddenly lapping faster. The engineer even "joked": "now we do like this always". Leclers knows he hit verstappen, he may or may not see the sparks, he knows the mirror is loose, and he may or may not feel any amount of damage. What is clear is that he isnt actually suspiciously slower than vettel upfront, both the team and leclerc know this. Leclerc may not care about the damage or the risk to others, he certainly cares about his own pace, if he thinks the damage inflicts his driving and or pace, he certainly would want to pit. Here id still give him the benefit of the doubt, if he is not losing a lot of time, which he clearly isnt at that point of the race, theres no reason for him to pit i.e. wanting to pit

Im a weirdo and remember every detail from videos on the channel haha that’s Malaysia 2013 Alonso Ferrari. Bc I remember covering it furious haha shocker. But if you recall he wrecked bc of it. I’m laughing now but it’s dangerous. I wouldn’t google it, but ratzenberger was killed a session before senna doing this EXACT same thing. So I’m consistent atleast. Regardless, As the video goes on I do defend him there. You’re still reaching but I went there too. In the least these guys are hardcore racers. I don’t expect them to be fully responsible here for better or worse. Now I say reach bc he’s holding his mirror. He can do the math. But even still, that’s a sporting code violation regardless even my kid brother knows that. If you are taking 130 flat out holding your mirror and don’t pit, that’s pretty reckless. What he going to drive the whole race like that? And pray it didn’t fly off? Either way, his penalty would have fit this. THEN you see the penalty and it’s openly wrong and it’s still to this day the only one I’ve ever seen Them make a mistake and not correct. They quite a 30 second time add which removes all points. Similar games in Abu Dhabi - technical directive violation so no grid penalty bc it’s “declared” fuel but if he investigate before the race it’s a sporting violation bc it’s “established “ fuel overage. Not saying this adds up to the gap, but tell me Brazil would have happened if Seb was 10 points closer going into USGP. I don’t see him riding those kerbs. And I don’t see them touching . Maybe they do but in aggregate this doesn’t look good.

@@CYMotorsport again, im not arguing its not dangerous or anything. the bottom line is that i think it is impossible to hand this decision to the driver. its like asking a kid if he wants to ride the bicycle with a helmet or not. if the decision should not be upon the FIA (who in theory are neutral) it must be upon the pit wall to decide, with clear penalties in place. the mirror thing, i dont think he realised it has smth to do with the front wing. if he did, what could reaching out there fix? he probably thought in a heartbeat that he could "move it in place" or smth. in any case, leclerc himself wouldnt pit because of a mirror. it must be the team to call him in, the least bc of a security issue. as a driver i know the team sees it. if they dont call me in, i stay out. simple. im concentrated on other things in the car rather than working risk calculations out in my head. ive actually given up on believing in rules in f1. they dont mean anything, never have. for me, most obvious was red bull crash in baku. ves moved on the straight at least three times, in clear violation of the rules. yet everybody was like, "thats racing thats what we want to see!" straight up blocking people from overtaking on the straight is racing? well, turns out FIA thought it was. i dont get it to this day. my best guess is that the whole thing is more crude politics than fair sport. which explains everything, to me. and to me, thats a big turnoff.

It was dangerous, his Hands his fingers, I'm not a technical person, but someone say on comment somewhere I read he was lucky he didn't loose his fingers with the g force, Remember filippe massa got badly injured before with flying debris or a spring or something hit him in the head, Lewis was lucky thank god,

The only danger is that that we can all overthink these situations and perhaps give people involved more credit for supposed intelligence and clarity of view than they actually have viz. are the Ferrari personnel controlling the race from the pit wall communicating properly with the drivers, each other and team management? I would suggest that they are not and that incompetence and lack of proper communication lead to their bizarre and extremely dangerous behaviour.

At first, that's the line I took too. but then you see Masi confirm Ferrari lied to them. and you can hear his engineers tell him to stay out after they confirmed three times in one lap to come in conveniently after the piece flies off. then you see Mattia say that was the reason. I think the Ferrari stuff is 100% there. The only thing I was surprised by was the fact that Ferrari updated their driver ZERO times about the damage on his car. that alone is a massive red flag. the point of any of these videos is really just to make you look twice. it's rare i'll try to convince you of something. so it sounds like based on your comment, the content helped you come to your own conclusion. that's all I can ever hope for! thanks for the feedback, much appreciate it, the comment, view , and time watching stuff like this takes. I cannot help but dislike Leclerc, there's no doubt that when conditions are in his favour he can drive very fast but in racing scenarios there's something not quite right about him and he expresses that same smug sense of entitlement that Nico Rosburg had,the "I WANT IT ALL" thing regardless of how it's achieved.

Christopher Franklin I appreciate you being candid there. I kinda sensed that from your original response so it’s refreshing for you to say it like that. We’re saying similar things haha to me it sounds like you’re taking Hanlon’s Law approach. That’s more than valid. And if I was forced to answer, I’d go with that too if I was having a genuine conversation like this. I struggled with this video bc I 100% agree about Leclerc but had to put that aside bc Ferrari gave him nothing and fumbled strategy. He had damage and didn’t ask one single time how bad it was. That’s highly irregular. It has everything to do with this plausible deniability thing and what they “ put in writing” over radio. Mercedes doesn’t do That. You’re spot on regarding MB and strategy. Ferrari is faster and frankly, has a stronger driver line up. I’ve been more critical of ferrari drivers than any other team on this channel and I’m still saying that. I think that quality about Leclerc will drive him to win multiple world titles but he won’t if his driving under duress doesn’t change. Quote me on that. Racecraft maturity is NOT there. But what’s why ferrari needed bigger punishment. A driver who will not be candid about car performance bc he wants to win at any costs has to be checked by a garage who is handling strategy properly. Ferrari doubled down and proved they will not only enable Leclerc, but take it further. It’s a disastrous situation waiting to happen. And Toto will our maneuver them consistently if something doesn’t change. I hope max goes to Merc and not ferrari in a couple years. Anyways cheers for leaving your honest thoughts. Good analysis, what I personally think as a very cynical person is that everyone here did their job perfectly, except the FIA. Mercedes tried to force the pit-stop for Leclerc with the team radios to Lewis (of course I think the primary reason was concern for the driver, but you can't totally discount that aspect either. Then Ferrari did their job perfectly, they are a team top and as a team they have to maximize their gains. FIA is there exactly because of that, they should be the dogs that prevent situations from becoming dangerous, but in this instance they were sloppy and incompetent, you can't trust the word of someone who has all to gain from not mantaining his promise, like in any kind of competition (sports, business, war,...). That said I don't blame Ferrari, probably every other team would have done the same (I could expand as to why but I don't want to write too much 😅) but it is Leclerc's behaviour that I fully support: he is a driver, and his job as a driver is to drive the far as fast as possibile no matter the condition of the car. The only point on which I strongly disagree with you is that the fact that after the pieces of the front wing fell off Ferrari didn't want to pit anymore doesn't seem strange nor outrageous to me at all... after all the danger was over, if you look at the footage you can see that the front wing pillars were still solid as the rest of the wing was, so the riso of other pieces falling off was really low (btw from an engineering point of cose ehen things fail under stress due to defects/crack, they usually do it only once, meaning that after the "big piece" fell of you wouldn't expect other pieces to still come off).

  • @CYMotorsport

Yeah you're right that was really cynical hahah I thought I was the cynical until this video. Your positions though even where we disagree make perfect sense. I think my issues come with the fact that it just shouldn't happen. Even though I can make sense of it. Technically, you're correct. If I ONLY care about my drivers and teams, it would be perfect it all fell off. But I take issue with the fact that they are supposed to be the last line of defense to stop this behavior. If everyone is this opportunistic, it would be anarchy haha. It's not good when even the team boss can't be reasonable (referring to his comments after the race where he was still upset they forced him in). I get what you're saying - You'd make a great villain - or Ferrari team boss haha great points though thank you for taking the time to spell it out

@@CYMotorsport I also think things like that shouldn't happen, in these situations FIA should be harsher and much firmer in their action just because of that, but sadly it's not what they are doing at all... quite the opposite! I have to confessa that even if I'm much more cynical because I think risk is an ineliminable part of motorsport, thinking of ruthless teams ready to sacrifici everything in name of competitiveness made me think about all the great drivers that died in those awesome and deadly Lotuses, their mechanical and structural parts always so lightweight that they failed every two races, or to Williams sloppily welding Senna's steering column, or Lancia's paper-thin fuel tank in the spectacular but dangerous Group B Rally World Championship, that cost the life of Toivonen and his copilot

I'll make a comment regarding that first lap which you wouldn't have heard. I only get to see the highlights on the UK's Channel 4, the commentators are the incredibly experienced Ben Edwards (and v respected he is, too), and the driver is David Coulthard. Whatever you think of him as a driver, he is too a very experienced driver. BOTH men, before halfway through that lap, were saying that he needed to go in and change that nose because the wing could cause an accident and hurt someone. They predicted _exactly_ what would happen. After the recent death of Leclerc's friend, I cannot imagine for one second that he would want to be on the road chucking crap at the people behind him. I'll also be generous and say 'incompetence' on the part of both Leclerc and Ferrari, but also the FIA. But even though I say this, there is a part of me which feels it hard to forgive the team for this. I've seen too many accidents caused by stray bits of bodywork, and some serious injuries. I've been a fan for a very long time. Ferrari are too well known for not even bending the rules but out and out breaking them with no consequence. A very well constructed and presented piece. Thank you. Edit: Subbed! Btw, Ferrari cheated again in Abu - Ferrari fans - Dhabi. No minor technical thing, a serious, usually disqualifying infringement. On Leclerc's car. Got a €50,000 fine. I'm not saying he benefited from it during the race, in fact I'm sure by the time the car was on the grid, it was perfect, but Ferrari were at it again. There's a reason the FIA was known as Ferrari International Assistance after all. Check out the 'spygate' affair (I'm sure you know Aiden Millward's channel; it's all been updated recently on there). McLaren - though proven to have not used a single part belonging to Ferrari on their car - got a $100,000,000 fine. Renault (Benneton? That team anyway) and Toyota, also were found to have information from two other Ferrari employees, both Italian, both cleared - yet were clearly guilty - by Italian courts, and how much were those teams fined? Not a cent, US or EUR. At the same time the McLaren thing was going on... I rest my case.

Even motorsport cite 30.5 of the sporting regs (www.fia.com/file/78014/download/26183) which is the best anyone can do. to me, this seems weak.
