I have about 40,000 miles on my TUx, and I have enjoyed each and every one. I have commuted on Interstates, have taken my wife on 2000 mile week long camping trips, have ridden off road for many miles, and have played on twisty roads on it. It is a do/it-all bike. But you do have to let the bike pick its own speed: trying to push it past that speed is frustrating. It’s a great bike, no matter how many years you have been riding.

But Helllooooo! As long you don't try to race a ninja 1000 your fine. 250cc is enough for commuting, fun rides and just riding through the country side enjoying the freedom that comes with cycling. I'll commute with 250cc now. 14 miles on a hwy 70 mph speed limit. Then hwy with a speed limmit of 55 and 60 for 9 miles. After this city riding city speed limit between 45 and 35. Is it the fastest bike? No. Is it the most powerful bike.? No. But it is a bike with a lot of fun. And honestly. Is there not always a bike with more power, more top speed? I learned a long time ago, going to the store get me that brand new Yakabhonelli 10 000 CRCE RR-R the fastest bike in the world and then, 2 days later, Kawanelli have out that just a little more powerful, more speed bike.

Small and simple bikes are an absolute blast to ride. I have 4 bikes and often choose the smallest one first. Nimble, great gas mileage, and cheap insurance to boot.

I'm trying to find something cheap...lets say $1,500-$2,000 or so. Looks like the 250 is a bit more than that and I haven't found too many for sale. Any recommendations on a cheaper starter bike? I'm 6'1"- about 200 lbs. thanks a lot

KYMCO K-Pipe is the cheapest bike available through a dealership in the US. It has a 55 miles per hour top speed on flat ground, it may not be powerful enough for your needs though.

absolutely perfect bike for beginners, and actually great to drive after... 22 years and much more than 50.000 milessssssss

I just bought one of these for my 21 year old son for his first motorcycle. I'm 60 and I've been riding on and off for 47 years... starting with a YZ80 and working up to the largest cruisers. I had so much fun test riding this little bike that it's rekindled my interest in riding after I sold my Suzuki C50T a few years ago. So, now I'm looking around for one. Thanks for this great review. You do a great job of hitting every point imaginable, which is something the other reviewers never do. Kudos!

Great review...thanks! I have one of these babies and love it! I also have a 650 Burgman and love it too! I don't think I've ever ridden a motorcycle that's more fun than the TU250X. This is truly the little bike that can! I'm 64 years old but this motorcycle makes me feel like I've rediscovered the meaning of pure fun!

wow i didnt expect a long review on the tu250x in 2018! i have this bike and i love it! i keep thinking 'when will i upgrade?' but for my needs (lots of city riding and secondary highway routes) it's perfect. and it actually looks retro compared to the weird modern naked retro bikes that companies are trying to make now.

steve lam It made me happy for a solid week! I test rode it two years ago and liked it then so wanted to see if I'd hate it after a week. Yoi have a great bike sir and keep her! You can mess with it and alter it to make it your own too. I'm after Yamaha right now trying to catch a Sr400 cause it's the same, retro and yet modern. So help hit them up for me and I'll make a long range one for that too.

Rabid Hedgehog I picked up a 2018 SR400 2 weeks ago. Sweet looking bike with very high build quality but it's VERY TIGHT brand new. Needs a long breakin period but I'm not worried. There is an epic thread on advrider about the SR with around 180 pages of people praising them. I went in for a tu250x and left with the sr.

i'm sure you could import one from the states. i just don't want the hassle as i don't know whats involved in doing that. for a first bike, i dunno if its the best idea for a kickstart-only bike though?

Great review. I bought a new orange and black 2016 TUX in March. Have about 1200 miles on it as of the end of May. Everything you stated is spot on. This is an awesome little commuter that loves 40-60mph. I'm 6' and 215 lb. and it's very comfortable for me. Great gas mileage, easy maintenance and it just makes you smile. The retro style turns heads as well.

When you have a mirror that vibrates/shakes at different RPMs. You need to change the frequency that the mirror is sensitive to. Just get a stick on wheel weight , A small one, and stick it on the mirror somewhere to change the frequency that the mirror responds to.. it doesn’t have to be large, it could be a small as 1/4“ x 1/4 inch.That’s one of the reasons that a lot of bikes have bar end weights from the factory.. they are vibration dampers. Another possible fix is to install what is known as a bar snake inside the handlebars if they happen to be hollow.

i’ll tell you exactly why you think the bike is working harder, and why do you think it is vibrating more when the weather warms up. That’s because you’re not freezing in 32° temperatures like you were, and you are running the bike faster, and harder because the weather is nicer. It’s that simple

Great review and thank you for sharing your experiences! I've ridden one of these a few times here in Australia, they're great little fun city bikes. I didn't have as much fun with them on the motorway though, I also find them cramped and a bit buzzy, but on the balance of things, they're really excellent bikes and a lot of fun to ride.

Love my TU! Added a screen and a rack and box and it's a great little grocery getter. Nice review and good to see on a new(er) one.

This is an excellent bike... with a long development history, and a nicely modernized motor.. far more sophisticated than it looks. Simple, but elegant.

I've owned the SR400 and I loved the heck out of that bike. The kickstart really isn't that bad, especially since it's EFI. Once you find the right spot to kick from, it'll start right up regardless of temperature on the first kick. The only bad thing about the SR400 is the lack of power - it really feels like a modern 250 - you'd think the extra displacement would make it easier on the highway, but not really - I've gotten up to 95 indicated (and gear limited - you feel the power drop off a hair before that at 6800 RPM, Redline 7000/7200RPM fuel cutoff), but I'd say 80 is effective top speed, and really only comfortable around 60 (

Congratulations for the video, very enlightening. Here in Brazil, unfortunately, we do not have this model. Here we had the Suzuki Intruder 250, known abroad as the GN 250. Even this model is a predecessor of the one that posted the test. Hugs from this Brazilian vintage motorcycle enthusiast.

Some say that after the cameras were finished filming the TU fell in one to never be seen again.... Okay kidding but man these roads. I do miss this TU though as it was a friend's I stole for the entire week and enjoyed it. Funny we ended up with a VanVan instead. But not for lack of trying to get a TU during the pandemic.

I love my TUX! It easily maintains 75+ mph with the OEM sprocket (I'm 5'11", 160 lbs), but the bike is happier at 60-65 mph, so I stay off the interstate. The gas mileage is great -- 79 mpg in town and on state highways. The bike is easy to self-maintain as well. I'm going on a longer ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway this summer, so we'll how that feels.

yep the mileage on this bike is insane! but wow i'm super light and i'd say 75mph is the max i can go and thats with the 16t sprocket change. i certainly can't pass anyone at that speed.

steve lam depends on conditions. I was surprised, with a tail wind I held 140km/h..she can cruise at 110km/h with a head wind no problem. No mods yet just new mirrors

yep totally depends on conditions! cruised at around 78mph (125km/h) for about an hour the other day! unfortunately, no amount of perfect condition can make it go uphill at speed haha.

I'm 63 I've been riding since i was 14. I've had about 30 bikes in my time. Now i have a 250 honda helix maxi scooter. Words of wisdom to you young riders. Comfortable, practical, storage w/top case is outstanding. Gas and go. And the best 55 mpg at 70mph.

At 120 lbs, the forks never bottom out. You rock on that thing! It's way lighter than my old cruisers. Oh, and I tightened the mirrors and about to change the engine sprocket. But, I love it!

this was a real good review ...bike seems like a great every day rider,, i like how he understands the normal use factor and that they make different bikes for different reasons,, 90 on a 250 is great had a 250 elsinore cr race bike and it would do about 90 or 100 this was a full on desert racer the idea you can buy a 250 off the shelf and it will do about the same as a race bike that came with a number plate.. only thing i saw i would change is the bars they do need to be a bit longer to give a person more of a mechanical advantage of wider bars,,, i like the fact he was full throttle and could still trust it to ride one handed says lots about how he feels on the bike he trusts the bike and understand the limits.. removing the kick start is the most stupid thing the bike factories ever did we also want the headlight switch back,,, this bike was very impressive ..thanks for such a good info review great job,,,

I bought one of these a month ago, and it is so fun! It is everything I wanted and more. Honestly surprised you only got 60mpg. My first fill up was 75, the second I got 80mpg! I rarely ride on the highway or above 55 though. it’s so nimble and maneuverable and you can easily push it without a struggle. Only thing I wish it had was a tach since you do have to use all its power to really get going. But mine was under 1000 miles when I got it for $3000 couldn’t ask for a better deal in 2023

I’ve always loved those little 250’s. They are such easy maintenance and fun around town and US highways. I’ve had numerous duel sports and crotch rockets. I never liked HD’s and their prices or the tough guy mentality of having a 1450cc. I can still bench press more than most people and still out wrestle most 20yr olds. Plus the small bike makes my 225lb body look so much more massive! Lol

That’s right! 80mpg! If gas ever gets up to $10 per gallon they wouldn’t be able to keep those things on the showroom floor!

Excellent review with your ~20 mile daily commute with freeway capable, comfortable, and fuel efficient performance you've about convinced me this is the bike I need to load on the back of the Sprinter and hit the road. The "werbliness" you experienced would probably be alleviated with the addition of a fork brace? Price, weight, and 67 mpg efficiency makes this and attractive bike to tote things on while camping in my Sprinter. Was the "curvy" portion of your review on a portion of the old RT 66? TIA, Will

The curvy portions were provided by HWY 77 and 74C just north of Guthrie. Either a fork brace or a different tire pattern to be honest.

I know this is a very old video, but the typical reason for additional vibration on the right hand side mirror is that the throttle tube prevent the hand from damping out as much of the tingles as the tightly fitted left hand handlebar grip.

I loved my TU250! It's even better with a 15T front sprocket. I ride an electric Zero now (it's awesome), but would take a TU out on another road adventure anytime. So light, nimble, great mpg. Fantastic pony bike.

Totally love me a TU. It is a favorite trainer bike for new riders but experienced coaches as well because it's just a great machine..... And yet ended up with a VanVan at random lol. Still would love a TU as well.

Nice demonstration of the bikes ability to go down a road and interstate.....FYI: My 2019 manual states the Fuel tank light comes on at 0.7 gals, tank holds 3.2 gallons

Interesting video enjoyed, I have the Van Van 200. I haven’t reading that much. It’s only got 400 miles on it and it’s a 2017. A lot of your traveling on your video here is recognized because my niece lives in Edmonton. In fact you might have have heard of the Miranda Christmas lights they put on every year. I bought my Van Van to take on the back of our motorhome.

Same price as the Suzuki dr200s I'm having a hard time deciding which one I want to buy. Thanks for the review

I found a 2011 model and will go test drive it today. The seller is asking $2500. Im a 68 year old returnig rider, just finished my MSF course. I was going to buy a brand new Rebel, but think it would be way less stress relearning on a lighter, used bike. Never expected I would find a review on this year and model, so thanks for that sir.

In response to your desire to own an sr400, I had one for a short while, they are beautiful and the build quality is like a Rolex watch, I just liked to look at it, and very very quiet. I loved it except for 1 big dealbreaker.. it’s underpowered I guess because of the jetting and restrictive exhaust imo, but the problem I had was when you get to around 45 mph a vibration sets in that starts in the seat and worked it’s way up my spine at about 65 mph. And that is a range I usually like to ride in. It’s not due to a problem but an issue of the design, it dosent have a vibration dampener like modern bikes have to cancel out the vibes so I sold it because it got to me on anything beyond 25 mile trips. The kickstart was fun, it allways started easy.

The top speed listed on the website is 75 MPH. I was convinced that it would be lower, but 80 with someone my size? That's awesome. I'm also in Oklahoma so a little interstate driving is hard to avoid.

Yeah that 80 does come eventually lol. But it is doable.

I've got a carbureted Vulcan 500 that has some some issues, I'm really interested in something a little smaller to be honest. My work commute isn't long, not a ton of interstate riding around here -- I'm really hoping to test ride one of these, because it seems like a really awesome little bike. Slower yes, but more comfy for sure. Light weight, easy to use. No Non-sense.

Wish they manufactured more motorcycles with the classic UJM standard control layout and no fairings. Easy to ride, comfortable, great visibility, and a tip over on your driveway doesn't cost $400 in body damage..

I actually had more issue with the left mirror. Interesting that you had consistent issues with the right one.

The old honda cb250 rs singles are similar, bulletproof. A great day to day commuter.

Considering buying one ok for these.. it's in the parking lot of my building and was blown over during a storm.. it lay there for a week before I picked it up. I noticed the tires were almost flat, kind of rotted, it didn't have a plate and it's under a pretty weatherd and torn up cover. It hasn't been used for some time. Still, it looks to be in great shape so I left a note stating my interest. Hopefully they'll be willing to let it go for a decent price. I've ridden smaller bikes, mopeds and scooters for 15 years and as I don't have a car at the moment, have been thinking about getting something a little more serious.. fingers crossed!

I would go through it and make sure there was no water intrusion on the engine and such. Pull the spark plug and send in a scope to check out the piston and cylinder walls and such around it. Also take a gander inside the fuel tank, modern fuels with ethanol have an ability to eat away things and rust the interiors of metal tanks, this may cause an issue with the fuel pump as well.

That bike that holds a special place because you learned on it. They have awesome bobber kits for these!

I wish I could have learned on this bike. I trained on a dodgy KLR 650 from the 80s and then my MSF bike was an Aquila 250.... With no first gear...

Interesting comment concerning the bike not liking heat. Always great videos. How does the tux compare to the Rebel 300? You did an excellent job by not guessing the bike owners weight.

The 300 is more modern and powerful and capable of the higher speeds vs. the TU. However, I like the charm of the TU and it's more comfortable to ride over longer distances. Just not going to get there as fast.

I put the 16 engine sprocket on. Good Lord! A huge difference. Fork cozy's too. Pure vanity. Taller gears are way better.

I loved my little TU250X, but it was those windy days on the freeway that forced me to get a bigger bike. I just do too much freeway driving for it. But for most people it can be a great lifetime bike.

If you did not have the disclaimer on the model and you happened to take the course at OSU OKC then it very well could have been this very bike. It was a loaner to the program from OK Honda Suzuki and had like 390 ish miles on it when it was picked up after being used for the MSF course.

Which bike has more buzz, the tu250 or the Rebel 300?

I wasn’t able to get a vanvan. I think I waited too long. I was looking at this bike also and I’m glad you made a review of it. One thing I was worried about with the skinny tires… When you rode over stuff, did the TU250x slide into different grooves in the road? This would be my second choice (to the hard-to-find vanvan) and I have been able to find one or two of them.

my sr400 (narrow tires too) follows grooves sometimes. regardless, that's something you're supposed to be aware of on any motorcycle

@@TheJunky228 it’s turned to be a great bike for local stuff, it rumbles over all urban obstacles. Riding parallel on recessed tracks, navigating - slowly for sure - over gravel, chugging in and out over potholes, I’ve been very happy. Great for anything 55 mph and under. I rode it for a few exits on the highway and I gotta admit I found the experience a completely terrifying, white knuckled experience, but for getting around town it’s a really fun bike. At 80 mpg, I’ve no complaints.

Such a pity that Suzuki have stopped producing them after 2019 :/

Pour some lead shot in the bars. It absorbs a lot of vibration.

There's one for sale around me for $2K and hopefully I can get it down to $1600-$1700 with only 3.8K miles! It would be a great buy for the new year. Crossing my fingers!

I reckon you'd like the Genuine Motors 400cc now in USA... Honda CB400SS clone circa 2002-06 era I think. They've been in Oz for a few years, and in UK for near 3-4 years. You might want to see if their is a nearby dealer to try.

I want to ride that machine. I had reached out to them for a ride and demo and they said that they were going to do it, then nothing. I am still trying to work it out with them, but our local dealer refuses to carry the GS. But the hunt shall go on.

It's an easy rider and a good one to train on.

Just rode this the last two days of my msf course after coming from a xsr 600 and a vitpilen 401. The bike felt great and comfortable but dear God the handlebar length and curve was terrible. Wrist cramps and trex arms the entire time.

The rear tire isn't a problem, the front tire is shaped weird...... it has a point in the middle

I've been thinking about going down to a 200-250cc dual sport, and am contemplating really exploring the massive grid that is Oklahoma's back roads, since highways would not be a very comfortable or even legal for the 200's. This would be a perfect bike for those back road trips as well. I feel a motovlog series coming on... just saying. It would even work for Groms or Z-125's like Pequod.

My local highways are posted at 90kph, (about 55mph) but you need to maintain 105kph (65mph) to not end up splattered on the grille of a semi. From your great video this seems doable on the TU with the exception of very steep hills or very strong headwinds? I don't expect to spend all day at these speeds but in order to get anywhere I need to spend a few miles on a 2 lane highway and it's not safe to be holding up the trucks around here.

That is correct. This bike should hold 65 though even with the hills and winds, it's the 70+ where it runs out of breath.

I have owned two Tu-250x a 2015 purchased with 1,000 miles on the clock and a 2009 with almost 10,000 mi. I have ridden the bike twice between SF and Portland. I live in the twisties. Neither bike has ever exhibted Any Wobble ! So, you need to look to your tires, fork fluid, and steering head or swing arm bearings. Most likely a tire issue. As to buzzing at freeway speeds. in the flat land where you live.. changing to one more tooth on the front sprocket, will give you much lower revs at freeway speeds, and a more usuable 65 mph passing or hill climbing speed when you drop down into 4th. If you live in the hills, or just ride urban/suburban stick with the factory gearing. There is an excellent Tu-250 riders group on the internet. My bitch is the lack of a long smooth seat so you change positions. You will find the SR-400 is a crude runner compared to this gem. If this is too small or too slow.. then the CBR-300R is the obvious choice. Despite its stupid looks, you do sit upright on it..and it is a much more powerful bike and fits bigger riders.. but I can flat foot it with my 29 inch inseam.

They would be pretty comparable indeed The GZ250 has around 20HP while the TU is a smidge less at 16HP. Weight is near the same seating is a little more upright than the GZ on the TU but other than that they will be pretty similar.

It’s just what I want but I would be nicer if it’s a 400cc cuz the insurance would be the same plus you get extra hp.

What about Honda CB300R in this category?

How does this bike compare to the gs500f you reviewed a couple years ago?

Joseph Wagnon Slower but more comfortable in a way. I felt more cramped on the GS500F. But the fairing is wonderful to have in the state and it helps to have it. Overall the GS500 wins

Thank you for your video I would like to ask, does it travel for a 900 km without stop or oil change . Although its air cool system. My country is desert weather zone.

I'm looking for a standard bike to compliment my old BMW r75 / 5. I'm actually thinking a TU might be similar ride. The old BMW seems to max out at about 70 mph. I'm thinking the TU ergonomics might be a bit more cramped though. Do you have any experience riding an old BMW and how it would compare to a TU? It might sound ludacris to compare at 250 to a 750 but I also have an XT 225 and it accelerates quicker holds speed better and stops better than the old BMW.

Keith Thompson haven't had a chance to ride a BMW but 11 hours on the TU was still a fairly comfortable little trip.

I'm looking at a Volty 250 here in Thailand but don't know yet the year, so I'm wondering if it's the same as a TU250. Does anyone know?

how top speed depends on road

This was a great video for me. My wife just bought a Honda Rebel, and I wanted to learn to ride so we can ride together. I'm a 6 foot tall woman so i'll probably have the same knee problem as you haha, but I was considering this as my first street bike. I've dabbled in riding in 250cc Dirtbikes and the style and CC of this bike really got me wanting this bike. Would you suggest this as a first time bike? No freeway riding would be done on this btw. Appreciate the video! :)

Yes this is a perfect bike for what you are looking for and as a first time motorcycle as well. It is so easy to ride and approach it would do very well for you. Cheap to maintain too. Also without that freeway riding it would be in its happy place too. Hope this helps.

I am around 6 feet tall and about 230 lbs. I may have not mentioned it in the video but we did also have driving south winds upwards of 40-50mph on some of those rides and it pushed back hard and when the winds were finally slacked off performance was much better.

Would this be pushing it if a rider being 6’2 175lb were to ride it?

I am 2 inches shorter and at that time nearly 50 lbs heavier than you are. It held me fine and it does well for even our 6 feet 5 dudes that ride it during rider courses. Good overall.

I’ve been looking at this bike and the Yamaha sr400 and the Honda rebel 300 for my first bike and I was just wondering how it compares to them

The Rebel 300 would be the one that stands above others in power and ability. I will say that the SR400 and TU250X are far more comfortable seating. But across the line fuel economy and range would all be similar. The SR and TU both come passenger ready while the Rebel is a solo (US Market at least, I know that other markets they have passenger seats and pegs). But the Rebel having the more modern tech makes it very different. The SR400 is kick start only, has great charm, and is a good just daily rider through the city and limited use on the higher 70MPH roads. The TU250 is very much a commuter type and needs to stay off highways if it can be avoided as you're maxing out the engine. So it will depend on what you want to do. Long range highways and speeds, Rebel. Just urban commuting, the TU250 and SR400 are just great little machines to do that with.

Rabid Hedgehog thanks it sounds like for me that the sr would be best I think because I would use I for a 10-15 mile commute where the speed limit is 55 mph

You folks have a bit more choice over there than the US market for 250CC bikes. I am not sure of your insurance regulations but the Honda singles (286 but marketed as a 300) have about 10 more horses and more modern liquid cooling and smoothness. Suzuki does have a 250 version of its Vstrom that has a more modern power plant and allows for offroad fun. But unfortunately I do not know more than that.

There are many of these machines running around and I believe you will be able to find one that is better priced. I am not sure where you are located though.

Do you consider the Honda Grom and Kawasaki Z125 a bike for beginners, looking for something to learn how to ride a bike leading to ride bigger bikes after...?

I consider Groms and Z125s to be good starting places yes. The Tu250 is probably the best there is when it comes down to it, but the others will work. And they are fun to have around the city and such.

Do u think this would be a good first bike for me if most roads on my commute are 80km/h(50mph) with the freeway being 100(63mph) , would it be cramped, im 180cm (5 11), 75kg(165pounds)

Actually it is a good little bike to start on. Seat is surprisingly wide and comfy. It is a bit taller than some so it's not as "small" as it might appear. Power wise it will like that more than trying to hold up to 70-75 mph as that's it's happiest zone of operations it always feels.

I was seriously considering this for my first bike, but because it is a newer model, I had to look elsewhere. I wanted a low power thumper to start, and I loved using it for my rider training course in CT. It would be perfect to go around on. But, I found a Buell Blast for $1000 bucks, and it really straddles that middle area between middle range and low range bikes, but it is still great on gas. However, I really don't think the JDM standard bike style can be beat. Nothing modern can compare, it all looks overstyled to me.

The Vstar 250 is a shockingly plucky machine, but is carbureted and has a weird clutch travel where the friction zone is literally at the end of the travel. Yes it is faster. But I like the cushy and easy going nature of the TU. Low maintenance, and fuel injected, light, easy to handle.
