A Visit to Riverside Plaza (Parkhill Mall)

Ойын-сауық

Riverside Plaza, formerly known as Parkhill Mall, was a small shopping mall in Tarboro NC. There's great speculation as to whether or not this mall should've been built at all, but against all odds, it remains as a mostly intact mall. Catching it at the right time also makes for an unintentionally spooky atmosphere.

The wide open spaces of this mall with all the opaque windows reminds me of "Soylent Green" when the old man surrendered himself at the euthanasia clinic. This mall really gives me those vibes. Creeeepy.

Wow! This place is awesome!!! It looks like a movie set with fake store fronts. I would love to have that Cinemas 3 sign!

Imagine if you will a commercial elysium, 600,000 square feet of clean, air conditioned retail splendor. Here, there are to be stores that provide whatever the customer desires, but where? The lights are on, the music plays, but the only tenant seems to be... the Twilight Zone.

This mall is so good I had to watch twice! The one thing about these visits, is that you never know what you will find until you walk up to the door. Sometimes you get lucky and find a legendary space like this one.

The scale on which malls are being documented is something truly unique. Imagine if we could have documented roller rinks in the 70s and 80s to this scale or drive-ins before that. Something truly special is happening. It’s really cool to see so many people being part of it.

I am not necessarily insinuating that malls will become as rare as drive-ins. It’s just really cool to document how abundant they were

An old mall where I live was just purchased and will be turned into a studio to make reality shows like cooking and music.

Edgecombe County is Southern Nostalgia at its best. Tarboro was devasted by the 99 flood. This is a beautiful mall but the whole town is depressing because economically its a dump despite the efforts of the people to build it back in the past 20 years. Props to you for going there and filming. Eastern NC is the future. Id buy all the real estate I could east of I95

This has got to be one of the coolest places. I’ve been to about 100 malls myself as a mall fan, I will go some day. But I have never seen something quite like this.

I'm curious to the day and time you walked through, this looks like either early in the day or mid-week. Usually on the weekends, especially in the evenings all the lights are on, music on the loudspeakers and folks walking around. The theater still does pretty good business. The Sticky Cheeks I think is an ice cream place or something? Last time we went to see a movie there was a crowd of young kids down there and it was open. Folks are opening small businesses in a lot of the spaces as side hustles, so most of the traffic is after work hours during the week and on weekends.

This may be the deadest of the dead moles that I’ve seen you do. There really wasn’t enough there to tell if I would’ve liked it or hated it hadn’t been populated. I’ll just say, it fit the profile of “dead mall“ quite well. It looked a little de mauled at the intro with those other stores with outside entrances. They are part of that, so where do they come into the interior of the mall?

The stores on the outside of the mall have no entrance into the interior of the mall. The mall always had lil stores on the outside like that. The roses that’s there now had entrance into the mall, but they pretty much closed it off and put a wall where the entrance into the interiors of the mall would be. If you go into the roses now, and you not from here you wouldn’t even know that there was an entrance into the interior of the mall. I feel like if they open that entrance into the mall back up that’s inside the roses it would probably help the mall more

Very strange mall. I'd bet very few people actually go inside the mall, except for maybe the cinema. Most folks probably treat it like any other plaza/shopping center.

Crazy I come across this vid .. I was just saying to myself the other day, next time I have a day off work I was going to walk around the mall, have not been inside this mall in years, and I live in tarboro… drive outside this mall weekly, just never go inside, I be seeing ppl coming from inside the mall, some ppl be walking inside the mall (exercising) I remember going to this mall as a kid, a lot of stores were in there, Kmart, footlocker the cinema, which is still there. I even remember belk being there, which is weird since y’all are saying it closed in 1992, and that’s the year I was born 🤔 that’s weird as hell lol
