A Visit to Tulsa Promenade - ROAST EDITION

Tulsa Promenade is a now-closed mall in Tulsa OK. After many fire code violations and dwindling inline occupancy, the owners deemed it unnecessary to continue operations. Not that much was lost.

The upper level had been declining for quite some time before they finally closed it (and yes, they did eventually put "closed to the public" signs on the stairs). At first, the side with the food court was fairly active. It had a rue21, Lids, Icing, and a few other stores. The other side was dead, and that eventually spread to the entire upper level. They turned the AC off on just the upper level, closed the Dillards entrance, and it was only a matter of time before they closed the upper level off completely. I was there the last day this mall was open. People were openly taking pictures and video, and security was nowhere to be found. They had given up. I even witnessed the birth of a labelscar, as one of the stores was taking down their sign. 6:52 The storefront on the left was a used book store for a couple of years or so after the previous tenant vacated. Then, it was a bridal rental store for a while. That store was forced to move downstairs to where it is at 1:45. Edit: 9:22 The far wall used to proudly advertise the mall walkers' club they had. As the upper level was dying, they painted over it. The wall next to it also listed all of the good stores this mall had. Those stores kept closing, so they had to paint over that as well. Speaking as someone who lives and works in the Tulsa area, this mall deserves your scorn. Great video.

26 years ago my father set up a handbag and purse shop here. It sold so well he could finally put down payment on a house i would later spend my childhood in. As the years went by he's on to of business ventures but this mall kickstarted my family which allowed me to grow and become my own man. It is heartbreaking to see it like this but life goes on.

@@FTFJohnI used to go with my homies when we were teenagers 😂 I was 14, the oldest, and the rest were like 12-13. So much fun we used to have. I remember that one time when we climbed the top of the roof of the mall and just hung out. And that one time I threw a trash bag on someone’s head from the second floor, and then they saw me, started shouting at me, and pointing. Then told my friend “Leo, Leo, look down there” so that he’d get in trouble too. So Leo looked down and the face he gave me was like “🤨” cuz he didn’t know what was going on 😂 then we ran off cuz the person who was shouting came running after me, or us because they think they did it too 🤣

I used to go to this mall EVERY SINGLE DAY after work. I worked next door at the On The Border there. I remember when that tornado came through and blew up what felt like half of midtown. I lived less than a mile from Promenade at that time. Walking distance, but our house was not harmed. I went in there on the last day it was operational. Pure, unadulterated chaos. Children running around stealing signage. Storefronts falling apart. There actually WAS signage this time warning not to go upstairs, so I didn't, because I didn't wanna get busted by the mall or whatever. The Claire's you walked past up there was close to the parking garage, where the skywalk access to the elevator was, and that thing was falling apart last time I was there. The last movie I saw there was Ready Player One. Did you know that right across the street from Promenade where the Barnes & Noble is, and all the way down to that Reasor's is actually the first floor of an old abandoned mall? The ceiling of all those buildings there hides the bottom of the old 2nd floor. You can go around back of the AMC movie theater there and SEE for yourself all the old doorways that have been walled off by bricks. They look like doors you'd totally walk up and press if you were in a video game RPG lol. Those are all the old storefronts from the other side. I think, IIRC, that Promenade was supposed to REPLACE that mall.

We’d walk down the corridor of halls taking the trash to the trash compactor, and (as a film student) I thought it would be a great place to film a scene of a movie. It’s kind of neat and also a little spooky at night with lots of leading lines and all that fun stuff that would make an ideal shot with the addition of some mise en scène! Crazy seeing someone in a random KZread comment section mention the AMC alleyway doors 😂

@@dvferyance Nah, it is corporations fault just as much as the consumer, both have their role to play in this, consumers are not obligated to buy goods, and neither are corporations obligated to provide goods/services to people, the world cannot have one without the other. Yes a business goal can and should be to make money, but their goals cannot and should not align with the consumer goals at least not to the extent business would like, though there are certain goals that absolutely do align (like electric/water/gas/food etc, aka necessities) and sadly companies know this and can adjust their own prices accordingly. (A business goal being to buy goods at a low price and sell at a high price, often including items that are not and should not be a priority to the average family, they are often luxury items and sadly often times are far overpriced for what they do for your average human being, not to mention all the other costs involved in businesses (electric, water, employee wages, products for their business etc)... whereas consumers goals lean more to how does this affect the life i wish to live? I.e house over head/surrounding body, their own water, electric, gas, food, etc/other priorities that take more precedence over "luxury" items. Still the point is that it isnt entirely the people's fault, nor is it all the companies fault.

A LOT of malls go under because they're sold off to larger companies who then saddle them with whatever debt they were carrying. Add to that the advent of online shopping and that accounts for the collapse of the American Mall.

Sadly, malls are going out across America. The Promenade Mall used to be a nice, enjoyable place to go. If you wanted something, you could hold it in your hands, check out its quality, and decide what product was best for you while you were looking at the actual product. It was great! When the company that bought the place took over, everybody knew they were going to run it into the ground. They have a history of doing just that. Now we have the option of going online to look at a picture of what we want and trusting that everything we buy will actually be what we expected when it arrives. If not, we have to ship it back, sometimes at our own expense, and try the entire process again, hoping we will get a better result. I also have to say that part of the problem here was the attitude and intention of some of the people who visited the mall. We miss The Promenade!

From what I recall in the news, the fire suppression system was going to cost millions to replace and bring up to code. The owners didn't see the long term profitability in such an investment. I think it was the right call as the mall didn't have solid tenants and had competition from Woodland Hills Mall.

I feel the same way about the Cambrigeside Mall (formerly Cambridgeside Galleria) in the "People's Republic of Cambridge" (MA). Was treated like crap there, and now almost 2/3 of the mall is vacant, the 3rd floor leased to a medical lab. The food court recently lost half of their restaurants, and a museum dedicated to candlepin bowling left, and relocated. I love when bad places get their karma. :)

The nice lady working there calmed me down (a process that took over half an hour) and offered to buy me two cookies at the cookie store at 7:19 after I got then pierced. I think I know the security guard you're talking about near the end, if she was on the older end and kinda too underweight for a security guard. She's not necessarily mean or anything, but she tends to get these weird ideas in her head where minor rules need to be enforced and doesn't necessarily think about whether it's reasonable or not. She's actually really nice when she's not in "I need to enforce" mode, but yeah, she tends to go off on unnecessary details. She also gets cold very easily, so that's probably why she could stay on the upper floor just fine. And yeah, I know she used to work at that mall. She currently works where I work now. That said, when I moved to the Tulsa area, I had to go to this God-forsaken mall and wait over three hours just to get my license transferred over at the DMV branch there. I can confirm that there is zero air conditioning. But at least it was better than the OTHER option where you could just wait hours in a line, standing, out in the burning Sun at the other DMV branch.

The Promenade was pretty nice in the ‘90s. But in the 2000s it started getting kind of dangerous, at a certain point you wouldn’t be surprised to see fights in the parking lot. I’m surprised you said there wasn’t any violent when I know there’s been at least one shooting. Woodland Hills was always the biggest and best of the three malls in Tulsa. There used to be another mall in Tulsa called Eastland, but in the mid 2000s the owners started driving everyone out...for a while it was basically a l. empty mall with a movie theatre in it. Then a big bowling alley moved in to one of the larger locations that had one of those places like Dillard’s or JCPenneys. And then it became office space.

The whole video was hilarious, but as someone who's lived in OK my whole life, the comment at 11:05 got the biggest laugh out of me!

This mall is pretty darn bland but not the most bland I've ever seen. It's whatever but with that being said I love the fountains. They are far from my favourite but still nice.⛲⛲⛲

For this video I ate (I guess you can call it) homemade pizza pockets. After I had some Coffee flavoured ice cream from Haagen-Dazs. Of course I also had to have a mocha as well.😋🍕☕🍨

It’s sad to say that the mall has seen its days I’m pretty bummed to see it go I started working there back in 2010 when it was full of people and customers and years later everything started went to shit in a hand basket. 👎👎👎

Oh man, I live in Oklahoma, not too far from Tulsa even! I remember coming to the Tulsa Promenade Mall, the only positive place about that was the music store they once had, and I know that's gone now. I hated going to that place. It's embarrassing to know that THAT'S how they treat tourists and possible customers nowadays. Seriously!? That security guard really did that to you!? Does she not know a tourist when she sees one let alone someone walking around a mall for just exploration!? I hope I speak for a LOT of the people of Oklahoma, let alone Tulsa, when I say, my apologies to you, sir; you had no right to be treated like that! You want to hear something funny though? I can remember when that place actually HAD proper air conditioning! What a disgrace! I remember a time when going to the mall was fun. Not anymore though.

Malls have definitely been on quite a decline around oklahoma/most states to my knowledge, there is another mall in enid ok, that also has no ac/practically has no visitors most of the time, with little to no stores in it, I suspect you would likely be met with the same disdain that you had at that mall. (Which I also recall visiting when i was younger, but yea it isn't/wasnt somewhere i went to hang out at.) Honestly too many businesses/ corporations are all about maximizing their profits, and that makes sense, but what also makes sense is that consumers especially the ones willing to buy from places like that their pocket books aren't a bottomless pit, we do not have the funds to spend $1-$3 more here, $5 more there, $2 there, etc it certainly is a problem that admittedly does not have an easy fix, business that supply merch make the world go round just as much as the consumers, as they say cash is king, and I can't blame stores for trying something different, nor can I blame the consumer for making other things a priority like food in the kitchen/a roof over their head.

Not only is the owner of this mall cheap, but nasty as well. And who works out at a gym in this mall where there's no A/C?

Promenade was a great, active mall. ... ...in the 90s. Good riddance! I don't think anybody here in Tulsa will miss it.
