Great video as always but I would like to mention that Japanese isolationism during Tokugawa rule is mostly a Western misconception. While it is true the Bakufu sought to quell foreign influence in the country as a means of maintaining peace and stability (evidenced through restrictions on trade, persecution of Christians, expulsion of Iberians, and forbidding citizens from leaving or reentering the land in the case they were already abroad), the country nonetheless maintained close ties with Korea and China albeit on a much more subdued level. They interacted economically and culturally with the two through mediators of sorts (Ryukyu in the case of China and Tsushima in the case of Korea) up through the final days of the regime. It should also be noted that Dutch traders were allowed to remain on the small, artificial island of Dejima in Nagasaki as a means of keeping up with European affairs. It is only because Japan cut off ties with the West that outside observers described it as isolated from the rest of the world. Also as a side note, Japan "conquered" Ryukyu (Okinawa) long before the Meiji restoration. They however attempted to hide control over the region so as not to anger the Chinese who held a tributary relationship with the kingdom (amusingly hiding Japanese officials out of site during Chinese visits). The Chinese willingly obliged in this charade to avoid souring relations.

I just watched another video on the meiji restoration that mentioned all of this… is it fair to say Japan was mostly isolated? Asking as a westerner….

Fun fact: Japan has the biggest deficit or debt of any country. The US has the 2nd biggest amount of debt for comparison. The birthrate is shrinking due to people not having the time or care to raise a child in a tiny apartment building. So unless living conditions can be improved for the Japanese citizens quickly, there will be more older people than there are younger to take care of them.

Isn't that debt held by the Japanese people themselves though? The seem to have a patrotic tendency that could include taking a haircut on their bond holdings for the greater good.

if anyone wonders who is the daimyo at 2:42, thats Azai Nagamasa, he was the husband of Oda Nobunaga's younger sister Lady Oichi making him Nobunaga's brother in law, he commited Seppuku at the Siege of Odani in 1573 after losing the siege to his brother in law Nobunaga while his wife Lady Oichi and three daughters were fleeing, much later his oldest daughter Lady Yodo married Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

@@cgt3704 yes its because Hideyoshi was first in love with Lady Oichi but she later married another samurai lord named Shibata Katsuie who was much older than her and Hideyoshi defeated him in the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583 this caused Lady Oichi and her new husband Shibata to commit Seppuku and it was after that Hideyoshi meet Oichi's oldest daughter Lady Yodo who was just as beautiful as her mother.
