One day in 1974 Christopher Cross traded in a Fender Stratocaster at a guitar shop toward the purchase of a Gibson Les Paul. One day later 20 year old Stevie Ray Vaughan bought that Strat that is now known as SRV's legendary scarred and battered "#1".

The term "Yacht Rock" is from the 1980's. It was used when I was growing up. It was certainly not coined in 2005.
He went from playing clubs to arenas virtually overnight when this song dropped. He was made an honorary Admiral in the Texas Navy.

I love "Think of Laura".
Chriopher Cross was very popular back in the day.
Ride like wind show cases his guitar playing. It also features the one voice that you truly love. Worth a go
I suggest you listen to ‘Ride Like the Wind’. You will immediately recognize the background singer. A double treat. Amazing song.
One of the most beautiful songs ever. It's magical ❤❤
*Imagine, All you have to do is CLOSE YOUR EYES & YOU'RE THERE "SAILING"*
This is one of my all time favorite songs, hands down.
In addition to his musical talents he also was a race car driver. I remember watching him race in the Formula Atlantic series at the Long Beach Grand Prix.
Britt, you went full Titantic when you realized Nsync sung a cover of this. The chair slump was hilarious.
Christopher Cross had a few hits in addition to this one, but this was the big one. Still, it's worth checking out "Think of Laura," "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," which is from the movie with Dudley Moore, and his duet with Michael McDonald, "Ride Like the Wind."
Something is different. I can see the videos you are reacting to much, much better. Thanks Britt from all of us with older eyes. You're truly a sweetheart. God bless and Happy Easter to you and your family.
I have enjoyed every Christopher Cross song I have ever heard. This one is one of his best. Hope you like him. Great voice and great music.
My favorite song by him! 😊😊
Christopher Cross, along with guys like Michael McDonald, Rupert Holmes, Seals & Croft and others lead a genre of music that's been dubbed "Yacht Rock". A lot there you would love.
Christopher Cross once substituted for guitarist Richie Blackmore during a Deep Purple concert in Texas in 1970 when Blackmore fell ill. Someone told the band "Hey, this local kid is amazing, he can do it!" As you or someone said "Music is the closest thing we have to a time machine."

I had to look this up. It was the first US show by Deep Purple. The band got flu shots before coming and Ritchie got really sick. What an amazing story.
Triangle is to invoke the ship's bell. John Denver does a similar thing on Calypso.
I saw Christopher Cross and America back in the day on a first date. It was a magical evening.
Would you believe, he stood in on guitar for Ritchie Blackmore when he was out on a tour and played with Deep Purple. The man can really play.

Britt, you have such a nice way of dealing with your children via music. How wonderful.
The cabasa is a hand percussion instrument with a wooden handle and a cylindrical body covered in loops of steel ball chain, or metal beads.
I’ve been los in the forest for many years. Music like this brought me comfort in my mental darkness. Love this song
Britt, the album was released December 10, 1979, the first single released in January 1980. Cross’s self-titled debut album was one of the biggest soft-rock hits of all time. The first single was “Ride Like The Wind,” which featured a memorable backup vocal by Doobie Brothers singer Michael McDonald and rose to #2 on the pop charts the following summer. “Sailing” was the follow-up single, and it rose even faster and higher, hitting #1 on this day in 1980. It also transformed Christopher Cross from a complete unknown to the biggest name in pop almost overnight, propelling him to a still-unmatched sweep at the 1981 Grammy Awards, where “Sailing” won Grammys for Best Record and Best Song, Christopher Cross won for Best Album and Cross himself won for Best New Artist. Cross would have another #1 pop hit later that year with “Arthur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do),” co-written with Burt Bacharach and Carol Bayer Sager and winner of the 1982 Oscar for Best Song. But Cross’s next top-10 hit, “Think Of Laura” (1983), would be his last.

One of my very favourite songs , when l hear it l get very emotional. I close my eyes and dream of what it would feel like . A tear almost wells up in my eyes , l want at times to just sail away and never return …. you know . To find that serenity that is spoken of here . Love your reaction and insight Brit . Great work!
As a 20 yr old when CC was in the mainstream he was everyone's guilty pleasure in the 80s ... Britt watching you move and groove is chef's kiss ...❤❤ "Well, it's not far back to sanity At least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away And find serenity Oh, the canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see Really, believe me"
That song isn't about sailing at all. It's not even about artistic creatism. Christopher said it was about escaping an alcoholic father & being mentored by another man, who showed him what fatherly love & a good life could really feel like. Through that new father, Chris's canvas was wiped clean, a new masterpiece created, and the peace of childhood innocence re-experienced. It was all metaphor & allegory and his personal testimony; a most sincerest form of poetry. ❤ And at age 53, childhood innocence & peace are something I still occasionally daydream about, growing up in a dysfunctional home myself. it is NOT about Luke & Laura, it is about one of Christopher Cross' HS/College friend Laura Carter who was 18 & killed by a gunshot from a non-white person shooting at other non-white persons down the block from her near her college in Ohio in 1982.
He won five Grammy Awards for his eponymous debut album released in 1979. The singles "Sailing" (1980), and "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" (from the 1981 film Arthur) peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.[2][3][4] "Sailing" earned three Grammys in 1980,[5] while "Arthur's Theme" won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1980 (with co-composers Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen).

One of the few musicians I've experienced live. Great seat about 5 feet away. His live stuff sounds just like his studio albums.
One of my go to songs when I'm stressed to the bone, this song lets you sail to stress free mode. Very-GOOD-tune.
It’s a truly great song. The recorded version is second to none. I hear this song and it makes me imagine I’m on a beach by the ocean, under and umbrella, with a cool breeze, with a pina colada in my hand with Sailing playing in the background.
In 1980 he won five Grammys.
This song was a MONSTER hit in 1979. It was probably played once an hour by pop radio stations that summer, fitting perfectly to the mood on a summer afternoon. This song is the epitome of "soft rock" of the 1970s and 1980s. The genre got the name "Yacht Rock" in the 21st century mainly due to this song, I think.
Chris Cross was dismissed by many, because he was pop. I love pop, Cross is a master of composition, harmony, and production. He made a few great albums, and is well worth a listen. My personal favorite is All Right. Thanks for having me along!

That is an old school Earl Campbell jersey that he is wearing, so cool.
This is definitely another "Yacht Rock" song. For another sailing song, check out "Southern Cross" by Crosby Stills & Nash. Great vibe. It also reminds me of "Seven Bridges Road" by the Eagles, which has some of the very best harmonies you'll ever hear.

"Sailing" has such a lovely, relaxing song that it could easily be used as a lullaby.
Super talented and just a wonderful human being.
I know you love listening to the lives, but this one is so great on the regular version due to the music and the combination of his powerful voice AND the harmony w/the other vocalists...still a great version, he's pretty good live evidently...great voice, always loved this song and I'm 48 yrs old. Always calmed me in times of stress growing up, "Think of Laura" is of COURSE, one of my faves, cuz, well, the name! lol
Love this guy. Go for "Think of Laura" next. And, yes, judging a book makes you the fool.
The original album is green, his name above a nice circle in the middle and in it is a pink Flamingo... His follow up hits are a great vibe as well.... SAILING was a chill VIBE enjoyed sitting on the beach or a mountain, sea breeze or pine needles scent fill your nose... Heck, just chilling on your back porch on a great day... It begs to be listened to, it guarantees to elevate your senses!! Your imagination is off the hook, Gurl!! Luv your love of music! PEACE!!
So beautiful smooth soothing flowing feelgood music ❤❤❤😊

I remember this being an earwig in the late '70s. Used to play hourly on the radio back in the day.
This song always takes me back. Love it!
Just to give you an idea of what kind of impact this song had when released: It won the Grammy for Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 1980. It was huge. Ride Like The Wind and Arthur's Theme are both excellent as well.
Not just any jersey, but Earl the Pearl Campbell! I was a young'un back then, but somehow Chris Cross's "Arthur's Theme" evoked something in me I couldn't quite understand.
The name of the instrument is a Cabasa.
I will always think of him for "Think of Laura", which tied in to Laura on General Hospital.
Christopher Cross was highly respected as a songwriter and musician in the recording industry. Executives just demurred to him. I can't remember which artist it was but they brought in Chris to work with producers on an album and the label just said 'whatever Chris wants'.
Christopher Cross was everywhere in the 70s, dang this brings me back.....
Oh my CRUSH, Britt! A great song from a great decade!😘💋
Beautiful riff on the 12 string electric guitar. That vibe you're talking about is what is now called Yacht Rock. Christopher Cross, Seals & Crofts, Pablo Cruise, Ambrosia, Air Supply, & many other acts.
This is such a dreamy song. Warm summer night just chilling at the end of the day outside in the porch or dock by the water.
I have this album, love this song! Thank You I haven't listened to it in years! Forty years ago!!!!
5 Grammys for his first album. And an Oscar for Arthur's Theme.
A couple bong hits and a cool fan breeze with your eyes shut.., and you're feeling this song.
I was born in Jan of '78 but I was highly exposed to music during my childhood and remember a lot of music, even as a kid, that was way before my time. I cannot explain why, but Christoper Cross has been one of those artist that has just stuck with me. This is my personal favorite of his, at least of his radio released catalogue. I'm glad you enjoyed this!

Definitely take a look in your free time! Your reaction was so spot on! Nice to see people appreciate all the nuances! The definition of the yacht rock genre!
His self titled abum was an inspiration - in response, I coined the term tune-smith. He crafts words and molds harmonies for maximum emotional resonance.... a tune-smith. Minstrel Gigalo, Ride Like the Wind and Walking in Avalon are three of many quality songs by Christopher Cross.
Chistopher Cross' "Ride Like the Wind" will amp you up; it's very good.
