In this heartfelt and deeply insightful video, I tackle the complex issue of binge eating and the dilemma many face when trying to heal their relationship with food. The video starts by addressing the common advice given to those struggling with binge eating: to stop restricting and focusing on weight loss. This advice, though well-intentioned, presents a significant challenge for many who have spent years desiring a different body shape and cannot imagine a life where weight loss is not a goal.
The video acknowledges the wide range of experiences related to body image and eating disorders, including mobility or health struggles, body dysmorphia, and the impacts of fatphobia. It dives into the core of the dilemma: whether it's possible to recover from binge eating and still pursue weight loss. This question is critical for many, as the fear of gaining weight during recovery is a significant barrier. I share a personal, vivid memory of feeling trapped and disconnected from my body, highlighting the intense emotional distress that can accompany these struggles.
The narrative then shifts to discuss the transformative impact of Byron Katie's work on my journey towards recovery. Byron Katie's philosophy, which centers on questioning and challenging one's thoughts, is a powerful tool for overcoming the black and white thinking that often plagues those dealing with eating disorders. I share my experience of grappling with judgment and self-righteousness, demonstrating how Byron Katie's method helped me see beyond my entrenched beliefs.
The video emphasizes the importance of humility and openness to questioning one's beliefs about their body, food, and self-worth. It argues that much of what people believe about these topics is not grounded in objective reality but is instead a subjective truth shaped by personal experiences and biases. By challenging these beliefs, I suggest that individuals may be able to find relief and open themselves up to new possibilities for healing and self-discovery.

So interesting! In fact there's a video here on KZread by Byron Katie which uses her 4 step process which is called "hungry all the time" which demonstrates the process and what's more is about perceived uncontrollable hunger. It's worth watching.

Awesome. I love being lean but my "setpoint" is about 20kgs heavier, and I just feel crappy (physically and psychologically) when Im up there. So at the lower bodyweight Im constantly fighting my bodies desire to eat eat eat. And moderation, lol, I dont know moderation. Once I open the floodgates (ie eat one little "snack") its all on. Your channel is such a support and its so relieving to watch your stuff and hear things you say and think "yes! She gets it". ❤

I am so greatful for your message that the solution to stop binging is not restricting but acceptance. Since I started to allow myself to binge, the urges are less often and I don't eat as much. It is not easy to stop weighing myself every day and to stop controlling the food I eat. But it is making me feel better. But I cannot believe what Byron Katie says. Because in the longterm it means, that it is all my fault. If I cannot recover, it is because I am telling myself a (false) story. I am sorry, but that is not helpful for me.

Of course it may not resonate with everyone. Just to share my perspective a little if that's ok: NONE of us are to blame. All we (or anyone) are guilty of is believing our thoughts. When I identify my thoughts, then my feelings and behaviour make sense and that is liberating to me. I can see the trap of using the method to self blame, but for me, it actually shows me that it isn't my fault. It may just be how my brain works

Thank you for all your videos, Sarah, they have really helped. Really helped. 'Will power' is something that I struggled with and I've just reframed it as 'choice power'. Will power is difficult but if I think of it as choice power, it's given me freedom to chose. I've used your videos to think about whether I need to eat a particular food NOW or do I give myself the choice to eat it later on if I still need it. It's my choice power.

Hi Sarah, I just finished watching byron katie's video from the link but I am confused about how I feel about it. I don't mean to be disrespectful or ungrateful in any way, but I feel hurt for the people in the video. And I am very confused because I know that Byron Katie is actually trying to help them, to set them free, but I felt a lot of sting in my heart and I don't understand why I feel this way. Or maybe I just did not understand it enough.

We know that for many (not everyone) struggling with BED that focusing on weight loss increases bingeing behaviours. If this is you then the clinical advice would be to focus on regulating your appetite and calming down the bingeing and then make a decision about whether to pursue weight loss
